Microplastics

Textile wastewater is polluted by inorganic/organic substances, polymers, dyes, and microfibers (... more Textile wastewater is polluted by inorganic/organic substances, polymers, dyes, and microfibers (MFs), which are microplastics (MPs) and natural fibers. This work is aimed at the preliminary investigation of MFs and MPs in textile industrial wastewater, and at evaluating the removal efficiency of an on-site wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Ten samples of inflows and outflows of the WWTP of a textile company (applying a physic-chemical process) have been analyzed. Firstly, the samples underwent a pretreatment with 15% hydrogen peroxide at 25 °C for 5 days to remove organic compounds. Secondly, the MFs were recovered from the aqueous phase by pre-screening centrifugation, density separation, and filtration as alternative options. Filtration obtained the best performances, compared to the other recovery processes. Thirdly, the MFs were counted through optical microscopy and the MPs were identified through micro-FTIR. The MFs amount in the inflow samples was in the range of 893–4452 M...

Davis and Rhus coriaria L., which are Lamiaceae species, are used both as spices in food and medicinally. Lamiaceae species are known to contain high amounts of polyphenols. In this study, liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flight–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS/MS) was used for analysis of polyphenols in the plants. Under gradient elution with using 0.1% aqueous acetic acid solution and acetonitrile mobile phases, an Agilent Poroshell C18 reversed phase column was used for the simultaneous determination of 18 polyphenols, and separation was performed in 30 min. Pharmacokinetic properties of these polyphenols such as drug-like and toxicity were estimated using open-source software, pkCSM and SwissADME. Results These compounds were determined to represent different classes of polyphenols, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, coumarin and tannins. Research paper thumbnail of Influence of the nature of the metal ion on the rate of reduction of coordinated azomethine group

Russian Journal of General Chemistry, 2007

The kinetics of reduction of the azomethine bond in various Schiff bases and their transition met... more The kinetics of reduction of the azomethine bond in various Schiff bases and their transition metal complexes with sodium borohydride in dimethylformamide and ethanol solutions was studied. The reduction rate depends on both the structure of the starting Schiff bases and the nature of the metal ion. In transition metal N-phenylsalicylaldiminates, the rate of reduction of the azomethine group increases in the order Zn(II) < Ni(II) < Cu(II) < Co(II) < VO(II) < Mn(II). Similar trend is observed in other series of metal complexes with Schiff bases. The revealed trends are opposite to the Irving3Williams series of stability of complexes. This fact suggests that the major factor affecting the rate of reduction of the coordinated azomethine bond is the strength of its bonding with the metal ion. Depending on particular metal ion, the complexation can either decelerate or accelerate the reduction.

The obtained data were analyzed with ''statistical package for the social sciences'' statistics program. In addition, relation between metal concentrations in both soil and fungi samples were investigated. The highest metal concentrations in Bolu District, Turkey were measured in A. campestris (cadmium 0.270, chromium 2.735 and zinc 7.683), C. comatus (iron 160.12), M. procera (copper 15.990, cobalt 0.352 and nickel 3.645), R. luteolus (Pb 4.756) mg/kg dw (dry weight). As a result of the measurements, it was observed that metal uptake is related with the species of fungi and is also affected by pH and organic contents of the soil.

Research paper thumbnail of Comparative analyses of phytochelatin synthase (PCS) genes in higher plants

Biotechnology & Biotechnological Equipment, 2019

Plants employ various defence strategies to ameliorate the effects of heavy metal exposures, lead... more Plants employ various defence strategies to ameliorate the effects of heavy metal exposures, leading to re-establishment of metal homeostasis. One of the strategies includes the biosynthesis of main heavy metal detoxifying peptides phytochelatins (PCs) by phytochelatin synthase (PCS). In the present study, 14 PCS homologues were identified in the genomes of 10 selected plants. The size of these PCSs was 452-545 amino acid residues, with characteristic phytochelatin and phytochelatin_C domains. The N-terminal site of the proteins is highly conserved, whereas the C-terminal site is less conserved. Further, the present study also identified fully conserved Cys residues involved in heavy metal binding reported earlier. In addition, other preserved cysteines, with minor substitutions Cys(C)!Ser(S) or Tyr(Y) or Trp(W), were also identified in the PCS sequences that might be associated with metal binding. The reported catalytic triad residues from Arabidopsis, Cys56, His162 and Asp180, are all conserved at the respective sites of PCSs. A clear monocot/dicot separation was revealed by phylogenetic analysis and was further corroborated by the exon-intron organisations of the PCS genes. Moreover, gene ontology terms, coexpression network, cis-regulatory motif and miRNA analyses indicated that the complex as well as dynamic regulation of PCSs has significant involvement in different metabolic pathways associated with signalling, defence, stress and phytohormone, in addition to metal detoxification. Moreover, variations in protein structure are suggested to confer the functional divergence in PCS proteins.

Research paper thumbnail of Borohydride reduction of azomethine bonds in β-alanine Schiff base complexes

Borohydride reduction of the azomethine bond in the Schiff base complexes of β-alanine has been s... more Borohydride reduction of the azomethine bond in the Schiff base complexes of β-alanine has been studied. Ni(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes of N-β-carboxyethyl-2-hydroxynaphthylideneimine (L 1 H 2), N-β-carboxyethyl-2-hydroxybenzylideneimine (L 2 H 2), and N-β-carboxyethyl-N-2-hydroxynaphtylmethyleneamine (L 3 H 2) have been prepared. L 1 H 2 forms complexes with palladium as Pd(L 1 H) 2 , in which carboxylic groups do not participate in the coordination. L 2 H 2 and L 3 H 2 behave as tridentate double charged ligands, giving complexes of the type ML 2 .nH 2 O and ML 3 .nH 2 O. Ni(II) gives binuclear complex [NiL 3. 2H 2 O] 2. No visible reaction of-C=N-bond reduction with borohydride has been observed for the L 1 H 2 complexes of Co(III) d 6 , Ni(II) d 8 , Pd(II) d 8 , Zn(II) d 10 ions at 25 o С in dimethyl formamide. This tendency has also been observed for Ni(II) complex of salicylaldehyde based β-alanine Schiff base, L 2 H 2 , as well as Ni(II), Pd(II), Zn(II) complexes of salen. However, the C=N bond can be reduced with borohydride when it coordinates the metal ions, Cu(II), Co(II) and Mn(II). Ni(II) complexes of both Schiff bases are inactive against reduction. The reduction rates of Schiff bases and related activation energies have also been determined.
