Proceedings of the International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Industrial Applications, 2000

An integrated artificial intelligence environment for industrial expert systems geared toward pra... more An integrated artificial intelligence environment for industrial expert systems geared toward practical operations is introduced. In terms of hardware, the AI environment comprises a process computer, an AI processor based on the RISC architecture with hardware extensions for AI languages, and an engineering workstation. Each component plays its part in close cooperation with the whole system. The end results is an ideal AI environment. In terms of software, a compiler-oriented approach is taken for both the expert system development tool and Lisp system. This allows high-speed inference with only a small memory requirement at run time. Performance estimation has revealed that the AI environment provides a sevenfold increase in execution speed over a process computer alone

Research paper thumbnail of Influence of location factors on establishment and ownership of foreign investments: The case of the Japanese manufacturing firms in Europe

International Business Review, 2005

In the European context of few ownership restrictions we find that host competitiveness, host culture type, and industrial growth are the most appropriate location predictors for entry mode. We create a profile of joint venture, full acquisition and wholly owned greenfield modes and reveal how different strategic contexts interact with location factors to determine the MNE expansion approach. Our results imply that location variables are important determinants of expansion strategy, indispensable in analysing subsidiaries of MNEs even in hosts with stable political environment. q

The sequence analysis revealed that Rhodobacter species, whose intracytoplasmic membrane systems were characteristically vesicular, composed a sole cluster. Rhodopseudomonas blastica, whose intracytoplasmic membrane system was lamel]ar, was included in the cluster of Rhodobacter. The phylogenetic co-clustering of these bacteria conformed to their possessing of the identical types of carotenoids. Paracoccus denitr~'cans, which is nonphototrophic, is a right member of the Rhodobacter cluster. Rhodobacter species, Rhodopseudomonas blastica and Paracoccus denitrificans are apart from the other phototrophic bacteria and have the common deletions of 21 bases at the positions 1258 to 1278 (Escherichia coli numbering system). It was demonstrated that the morphological character "intracytoplasmic membrane structure", that has been regarded as a generic criterion does not reflect the phylogeny in the phototrophic bacteria. The transfer of Rhodopseudomonas blastica to the genus Rhodobacter is proposed.

Research paper thumbnail of Long-Term Employment Contracts in Japanese Companies and the Corporate Profitability in the Post Economic Bubble Era

ABSTRACT The long-term employment contracts that helped to explain the once superior performance ... more ABSTRACT The long-term employment contracts that helped to explain the once superior performance Japanese companies have come under pressure after the burst of the economic bubble in Japan after 1990. A large number of long-tenured, highly paid employees can become a financial burden for a company. Though companies have been reluctant to change this traditional structure, an adverse economic environment made it difficult for the system to fulfill its functional prerequisites. This analysis of 156 electronics companies in Japan confirms that the presence of long-term employment system during an economic slowdown can have a negative effect on corporate profitability.

This study aims at providing further evidence on the influence of entry mode and firm specific factors on the performance of Japanese-affiliated manufacturing investments in Europe. The empirical results are based on a sample of 98 companies for the period between 1994 and 1997. The main hypothesis is that firms with high firm-specific advantages and entering through greenfield investment perform better. Taking into consideration the full sample over the four years combined, results suggest that the success of theses companies depend on the size and number of employees of the investing company. As expected, the number of subsidiaries of the parent firm affects the pertformance of the subsidiary. Furthermore, entry mode and R&D intensity are shown to have a non-significant relationship with performance.

However, Malaysian consumers' readiness to accept green technology embedded in vehicle need researching. Based on cost and benefit analysis, this research aims at revealing buying decision on vehicle adopting green technology testing on sample of regression is used. The study reveals that Malaysian consumers acceptance of environmental friendly products are still low, hence, this study provides future insight to the industries on consumer level of intention to purchase green technology based vehicle and how to move further in the technology is recommended.
