The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) plays a crucial role in retinal physiology but is vulnerable to oxidative damage. We investigated the protective effects of selenium (Se) on retinal pigment epithelium (ARPE-19) and primary human retinal microvascular endothelial (ACBRI 181) cells against high glucose (HG)-induced oxidative stress and apoptotic cascade. To achieve this objective, we utilized varying concentrations of D-glucose (ranging from 5 to 80 mM) to induce the HG model. HG-induced oxidative stress in ARPE-19 and ACBRI 181 cells and the apoptotic cascade were evaluated by determining Ca2+ overload, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, caspase-3/-9 activation, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation (LP), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and apoptosis levels. 14 olgunun 15 gözüne fakotrabekülektomi, göz içi lensi kombine operasyonu uygulandı. Ortalama 6.0... more 14 olgunun 15 gözüne fakotrabekülektomi, göz içi lensi kombine operasyonu uygulandı. Ortalama 6.07±3.59(ortalama±standart sapma) ay takip edilen olguların; pre-operatuar 25.13±3.14 mmHg olan göz içi basıncı, son kont rollerinde 15.60±2.97 mmHg'ya düştüğü görüldü. Pre-operatuar, görme keskinliğinde (10/10, tashihsiz) 0.15±0.1V den son kontrollerinde 0.67±0.34'e artış anlamlı olarak saptandı. Pre-operatuar maksimal ilaç tedavisine rağmen 21 mm Hgdan daha yüksek olan göz içi basınçları tüm gözlerde post-operatuar dönemde 18 mmHg'nın altına düştü. Ol guların tümü operasyon sonrasında antlglokomotöz ilaç kullanmadılar. Ekstra kapsuler lens ekstraksiyonu ve trabekûlektoml kombine operasyonunun bilinen komplikasyon ve rehabilitasyon oranları açısından fakotrabekülektomide elde ettiğimiz sonuçlar karşılaştırıldığında fakotrabekülektomlnin daha avantajlı olduğu sonucuna vanldı.

Rare ZNF469 variants have been shown in keratoconus patients. The aim of the current study was to investigate the frequency of ZNF 469 gene variants in rapidly progressive advance keratoconus patients who underwent corneal transplant surgery by the age of 30, compared to their frequency in the normal Turkish population. A search in a patient database was performed to identify patients with a rapidly progressive keratoconus requiring corneal transplant surgery by the age of 30 in at least one eye. Twenty-six advance keratoconus patients (study group) and 109 health subjects (control group) were included in the study. Blood samples were donated, and genomic DNA was extracted. Purpose To evaluate the changes in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), ganglion cell lay... more Purpose To evaluate the changes in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), ganglion cell layer thickness (GCLT), retinal thickness (RT), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in eyes that received pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling for idiopathic macular hole (IMH) and to compare these data with data from fellow eyes and healthy controls. Methods This cross-sectional study included 49 subjects. Eighteen eyes that underwent surgery for IMH, 18 fellow eyes, and 31 eyes of the healthy controls were designated as group 1, group 2, and group 3, respectively. The RNFLT, GCLT, RT, and SFCT were measured by using the swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) device at last postoperative visit. The acute effects of cigarette smoking on pupil size and ocular wavefront aberrations (OWA) have ... more The acute effects of cigarette smoking on pupil size and ocular wavefront aberrations (OWA) have been previously documented. The accommodation status of the eye is well known to be related to ocular aberrations. No previous study has evaluated the impact of cigarette smoking on the accommodation status of the eye. This study presents intriguing findings regarding the changes in objective accommodation of the eye after cigarette smoking. To evaluate the acute changes in objective accommodation and OWA after cigarette smoking. A total of 34 otherwise healthy cigarette smoker participants were included in this prospective study. All subjects smoked a single cigarette containing 1 mg nicotine. Measurements of pupil size, OWA and objective accommodation were done before and after smoking. A Wavefront Aberrometer device (Irx3, Imagine Eyes, Orsay, France) was used for the measurements. The mean age of the participants was 36.6 ± 10.3 years (range 21-51 years). Pupil size did not significantly differ before (mean 5.72 ± 1.21 mm) and after smoking (mean 5.68 ± 1.14 mm) (p = 0.62). However, a significant decrease was observed in total spherical aberration (TSA) of the eye after smoking (p = 0.01). There was an increase in objective accommodation after smoking at each accommodative stimulus (range 0-5). This increment was significant at 2 D (p = 0.02) and 3 D (p = 0.03) of stimulus. The TSA of the eye significantly decreases after smoking. Cigarette smoking also causes a significant increase in objective accommodation at 2 D and 3 D of stimulus.

To report the case about a patient with conjunctival ocular surface squamous neoplasia who respon... more To report the case about a patient with conjunctival ocular surface squamous neoplasia who responded well to ocular photodynamic therapy (PDT). A 75-year-old man underwent PDT for his biopsy-proven conjunctival squamous cell dysplasia that was extending onto the cornea. Patient received 2 treatments of PDT with verteporfin (6 mg/m(2) body surface area, intravenously) with 2 months apart. The light dose was calculated as 50 J/cm(2). Whole lesion was irradiated 1 min after injection. Half of the mass regressed after first PDT. Second PDT resulted in near-complete cure of remaining lesion within 2 weeks. The patient remained stable for the 13 months. PDT may be useful in some cases of extensive ocular surface squamous neoplasia that is less than invasive.

To evaluate oxidative damage to the macromolecules, including protein, lipid, and DNA, in associa... more To evaluate oxidative damage to the macromolecules, including protein, lipid, and DNA, in association with total oxidation status (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) as an index of lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyl (PC) as a marker of protein oxidation, 8-hydroxy-29-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as an indicator of oxidative DNA damage along with TOS, TAC were measured by specific methods in 47 patients with exudative AMD and 25 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Significantly higher MDA, PC, 8-OHdG, TOS, and lower TAC levels were detected in the serum of patients with exudative AMD compared with their controls (p &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.001). The results indicate that an imbalance between TOS and TAC leads to not only increased lipid damage, but also protein and DNA damage. These first reported results suggest that protein and DNA damage might also play a role in the pathogenesis of AMD.

The distal hole is suitable for passage of 9-0 or 10-0 mm polypropylene or nylon sutures. The technique was effective in 8 patients with traumatic iridodialysis in the upper and inferior temporal quadrants.
