A relation between strength characteristics of the specimens and the nature and depth of defects has been clarified.

Research paper thumbnail of Corrosion Defects in Pipelines of Nuclear Power Plants and the Problems of Their Inspection

Materials Science, May 1, 2018

We study the structure of the metal of pipelines after long-term operation and the defects formed in the metal. It is shown that the results of structural analysis are in good agreement with the data obtained by the nondestructive method of magnetic memory of metals. The causes and character of formation of defects in the metal of pipelines of nuclear power plants are determined.

It was found that after chemical-thermal treatment on the samples a diffusion layer with a thickness of 50 to 130 µm is formed, consisting of 56…82 wt.% of chromium, the rest is iron. Metallographic studies were carried out on the samples and tests for heat resistance were carried out at a temperature of T = 900 °C. It was found that chrome-plated samples significantly exceed the initial samples and nitrided ones in terms of heat resistance. Tests of samples for tensile strength after chromium plating showed a significant increase in strength indicators for ultimate strength and yield strength. The plasticity characteristics of these samples are reduced.

Research paper thumbnail of Pecularities of Mechanical Properties of High-Purity, Iodide and Hafnium GFE-1 in Temperature Range 20-900°C

Taken results are testifying about considerable influence of methods of receiving hafnium, its purity and mechanical-thermal processing on mechanical properties. The characteristic abnormalities of mechanical properties in the temperature range 20-900°C for different purity hafnium are discussed.

Research paper thumbnail of EFFECT OF CHROMIUM COATINGS ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF Zr1Nb FUEL CLADDINGS IN LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE DIRECTIONS

Tests were carried out using the samples of a similar shape, namely, with an equal test portion length that is important for comparison of results. The obtained results have shown that at a test temperature of 20 °С the mechanical properties of initial samples are higher in the longitudinal direction than in the transverse direction. The ductility is slightly higher at T = 350 °С in the longitudinal direction, and σ0.2 and σв are practically equal. The preliminary deformation of ring samples increases their ductility from 23 to 34% independently on the test temperature. Deposition of the chromium coatings on the samples leads to the slight increase of mechanical properties in the transverse direction and decrease of σ0.2 with unchanged σв and δ% in the longi...

Held investigations with samples tension in tube type and modified samples, shape and dimensions of that are similar with such parameters of ring samples. Held comparison of mechanical properties in longitudinal and transverse directions at standard and modified samples. Notified significant differences of mechanical properties, mostly, relative lengthening (δ%) at testing of modified samples, and also with testing of ring samples with using deformation at cone insertion, in comparison with deformation in axis direction at 2 supports. KEY WORDS: mechanical testings, TVEL-tube samples, comparison of mechanical properties in longitudinal and transverse directions

As an alternative loading method, the method of strain of an ring specimen on a cylindrical rod was considered and tested. By compressing the cylindrical rod from the ends, which in this case expanded and exerted pressure on the inner walls of the ring specimen in the radial direction, the specimen was deformed. The plasticity of fuel element shells made of Zr-1%Nb alloy on ring specimens under different loading methods is evaluated: uniaxial tension on half-disk supports, on a cylindrical rod, and on a tapered rod. Uniaxial tensile strain was determined in accordance with the normative documentation for the test method. When testing on a tapered rod, a specimen with a th...
