The Everyday Implications of Ethnic-Racial Identity Processes: Exploring Variability in Ethnic-Racial Identity Salience Across Situations

The current study considered how individual differences in ethnic-racial identity exploration (i.e., the extent to which individuals have explored their ethnicity-race), and commitment (i.e., the extent which they have a clear sense of what it means to them) influenced variability versus stability in the awareness of ethnicity-race in a given situation (i.e., salience), and how this variability is related to mood in that situation. Within an ethnic/racially diverse sample of 395 adolescents (M age = 15; 63 % female; 12 % Black, 26 % Latino, 34 % Asian, 23 % White), results indicated that ethnic-racial identity exploration was unrelated to variability in salience, while commitment promoted stability in salience across situations. Parental Acculturative Stressors and Adolescent Adjustment Through Interparental and Parent-Child Relationships in Chinese American Families

This study expanded the family stress model to examine how parental experiences of these two acculturative stressors relate to measures of adolescent adjustment (depressive symptoms, delinquent behaviors, and academic performance) during high school and emerging adulthood through interparental and parent-child relationship processes. Participants were 350 Chinese American adolescents (M age = 17.04, 58 % female) and their parents in Northern California. Path models showed that parental acculturative stressors positively related to parent-child conflict, either directly (for both mother-adolescent and father-adolescent dyads) or indirectly through interparental conflict (for mother-adolescent dyads only). Subsequently, both interparental and parent-child conflict positively related to a sense of alienation between parents and ado...
Development of an Asian American Parental Racial-Ethnic Socialization Scale

To test the reliability and validity of this new measure, we surveyed 575 Asian American emerging adults (49% female, 79% U.S. born). Using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, the results show 7 reliable subscales: maintenance of heritage culture, becoming American, awareness of discrimination, avoidance of other groups, minimization of race, promotion of equality, and cultural pluralism. Tests of factorial invariance show that overall, the subscales demonstrate, at minimum, partial metric invariance across gender, age, nativity, educational attainment, parent educational attainment, geographic region of residence, and Asian-heritage region. Thus, the relations among the subscales with other variables can be compared across these different subgroups. The subscales also correlated with ethnic identity, ethnic centrality, perceptions of discrimination, and pluralisti...

In organ repair and remodeling, epigenetic events are important. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally and can target epigenetic molecules important in DNA methylation. The miR-17z92 miRNA cluster is critical for lung development and lung epithelial cell homeostasis and is predicted to target fibrotic genes and DNA methyltransferase (DNMT)-1 expression. Objectives: We investigated the miR-17z92 cluster expression and its role in regulating DNA methylation events in IPF lung tissue. Methods: Expression and DNA methylation patterns of miR-17z92 were determined in human IPF lung tissue and fibroblasts and fibrotic mouse lung tissue. The relationship between the miR-17z92 cluster and DNMT-1 expression was examined in vitro. Using a murine model of pulmonary fibrosis, we examined the therapeutic potential of the demethylating agent, 59-aza-29-deoxycytidine. Measurements and Main Results: Compared with control samples, miR-17z92 expression was reduced in lung biopsies and lung fibroblasts from patients with IPF, whereas DNMT-1 expression and methylation of the miR-17z92 promoter was increased. Several miRNAs from the miR-17z92 cluster targeted DNMT-1 expression resulting in a negative feedback loop. Similarly, miR-17z92 expression was reduced in the lungs of bleomycin-treated mice. Treatment with 59aza-29-deoxycytidine in a murine bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis model reduced fibrotic gene and DNMT-1 expression, enhanced miR-17z92 cluster expression, and attenuated pulmonary fibrosis.
A Single-Stage LED Driver Based on Interleaved Buck–Boost Circuit and LLC Resonant Converter
IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics, 2015
ABSTRACT A single-stage LED driver based on an interleaved buck–boost circuit and an LLC resonant... more ABSTRACT A single-stage LED driver based on an interleaved buck–boost circuit and an LLC resonant converter is proposed. The buck–boost circuit and the LLC resonant converter are integrated by sharing switches, which can decrease the system cost and improve the system efficiency. The input voltage of the buck–boost circuit is half of the rectified voltage, and two buck–boost circuits are formed with the two half-bridge switches and corresponding diodes. The two buck–boost circuits work in interleaved mode and the inductor current is in discontinuous conduction mode, both helping to achieve the power factor (PF) correction. A half-bridge LLC resonant converter is adopted here, and the soft switching characteristic of the LLC resonant converter is not changed by the switch integration. The primary-side switches still work in zero voltage switching (ZVS) mode, and the secondary diodes still work in ZCS mode, which both reduce the switching losses and improve the efficiency of the system. The design process is described in detail this paper, and a 100-W LED street lighting prototype is proposed, with a PF of 0.995, a total harmonic distortion of 5.7%, and an efficiency of 91.6% at full load.

However, there is a limited supply of human livers as a source of cells and, after isolation, human hepatocytes can be difficult to expand in culture, limiting the number available for Tx. Hepatocytes from other species, for example, the pig, have therefore emerged as a potential alternative source.
