Studies on the association between prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter with ≤ 2.5 microm... more Studies on the association between prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter with ≤ 2.5 micrometers in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) and term low birth weight (LBW) have resulted in inconsistent findings. Most studies were conducted in snapshots of small geographic areas and no national study exists. We investigated geographic variation in the associations between ambient PM2.5 during pregnancy and term LBW in the contiguous United States (US). 3,389,450 term singleton births in 2002 (37 - 44 weeks gestational age and birth weight of 1,000g - 5,500g) were linked to daily PM2.5 via imputed birth days. We generated average daily PM2.5 during the entire pregnancy and each trimester. Multilevel logistic regression models with county-level random effects were used to evaluate the associations between term LBW and PM2.5 during pregnancy. Without adjusting for covariates, the odds of term LBW increased 2% (OR=1.02; 95% CI: 1.00, 1.03) for every 5 µg/m(3) increase in PM2.5 exposure during the second trimester only, which remained unchanged after adjusting for county-level poverty (OR=1.02; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.04). The odds did change to null after adjusting for individual-level predictors (OR=1.00; 95% CI: 0.99, 1.02). Multilevel analyses, stratified by census division, revealed significant positive associations of term LBW and PM2.5 exposure (during the entire pregnancy or a specific trimester) in three census divisions: Middle Atlantic, East North Central, and West North Central, and significant negative association in the Mountain division. Our study provided additional evidence on the associations between PM2.5 exposure during pregnancy and term LBW from a national perspective. The magnitude and direction of the estimated associations between PM2.5 exposure and term LBW varied by geographic locations in the US.

Because the scale was developed with Whites, its utility and validity with Blacks may be limited by its reliance on the European-cultural terms suntan and sunburn. We tested the hypothesis that most Blacks would be unable to classify their skin into the four Fitzpatrick skin types. A random, statewide sample of 2085 California Black adults were administered a survey to categorize their skin into the Fitzpatrick types of always burn/never tan (I), usually burn/rarely tan (II), rarely burn/usually tan (III), and never burn/always tan (IV). We also added a response option not available in the scale, "none of the above describes me." Questions on sunscreen use and demographics were included. System framework and function design were achieved. Interactive processes management and multimedia control mechanism was implemented among media streams of clients’ browsers. It was integrated with previous developed Product Data Management (PDM) system. The system provides a real-time multimedia application environment for knowledge communion, information sharing, and conflict resolution, in multidisciplinary collaborative product design process.

The data consistency management mode was established in P2P collaborative design environment, and method of data update control was analyzed among design peers. Through constructing collaborative mode of P2P groups, we realized control mechanism of data update consistency on the basis of the design constraint sets. The proposed approach offered effectively technical support for dynamic data management of design process in distributed collaborative environment.

Through the requirements analysis of product interdisciplinary development, the six-layered functional structure of the framework was put forward. Key technologies of adaptive software integrated were also addressed. The multidisciplinary design and optimization environment was analyzed. Design process modeling and task execution was represented for group cooperation environment. Data multi-views consistency and knowledge process management was resolved in the interdisciplinary product collaborative design. The service-of-design oriented and adaptive integrated software framework can effectively realize cross-platform and scalable application tools integration, design resources sharing and data interoperability for product collaborative design.

It brings forward a group of custom protocols including assembly operation subject protocol for realizing collaborative assembly activity, as well as the mixed construction mode of collaborative assembly system. At last, it implements assembly to specific product on the self-developed integrated network platform covering modeling, assembly and emulation, from which the result indicates that the layered collaborative resolution and mixed development mode presented in this paper are advantageous to collaborative assembly in distributed areas.

The constraints model of function mapping was established between product structure and task breakdown structure. The colored Petri net was introduced into PDM system as the modeling tool to realize product structure model-driven project task management mode and to execute dynamic visible design task scheduling. It is explored to apply multi-agent system to carry out intelligent task management and dispatching. The agent communication and task dispatching framework were implemented.

Geographic patterns of cancer death rates in the U.S. have customarily been presented by county o... more Geographic patterns of cancer death rates in the U.S. have customarily been presented by county or aggregated into state economic or health service areas. Herein, we present the geographic patterns of cancer death rates in the U.S. by congressional district. Many congressional districts do not follow state or county boundaries. However, counties are the smallest geographical units for which death rates are available. Thus, a method based on the hierarchical relationship of census geographic units was developed to estimate age-adjusted death rates for congressional districts using data obtained at county level. These rates may be useful in communicating to legislators and policy makers about the cancer burden and potential impact of cancer control in their jurisdictions. Mortality data were obtained from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) for 1990-2001 for 50 states, the District of Columbia, and all counties.
