The most influential thinking on the concept of what the public sphere is and why it is important has been made by the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas. His conception, first defined and outlined in his Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere (1962) and updated by him over the next four decades, provides a starting and reference point for this chapter.
