The taxonomy of the cliff fern family Woodsiaceae has been controversial with 22-59 species in 1-... more The taxonomy of the cliff fern family Woodsiaceae has been controversial with 22-59 species in 1-7 genera recognized in various classifications. This is mainly due to limited taxon sampling (up to 33 accessions representing up to 21 species) and poor resolution in molecular studies so far. In the present study, DNA sequences of five plastid markers (atpA, matK, rbcL, rps4 + rps4-trnS, trnL + trnL-F) of 152 accessions representing ca. 43 out of ca. 65 species estimated of Woodsiaceae (122 accessions), and 30 non-Woodsiaceae accessions from the most closely related four families (Athyriaceae, Blechnaceae, Onocleaceae, Thelypteridaceae) were used to infer a phylogeny. Our major results include: (1) Woodsiaceae are strongly supported as monophyletic; (2) Two major clades representing the deepest split in Woodsiaceae are identified, corresponding to the two recently proposed subfamilies, Woodsioideae and Protowoodsioideae; (3) Within Woodsioideae and Protowoodsioideae, two and three well-supported subclades, respectively, are determined; (4) Cheilanthopsis is resolved as paraphyletic in relation to Hymenocystis (sampled for the first time) and Protowoodsia; (5) Physematium and Woodsiopsis are paraphyletic in relation to a clade containing Cheilanthopsis, Hymenocystis, and Protowoodsia; (6) Evolution of 13 morphological characters is inferred in a phylogenetic context, and morphological synapomorphies of each of the five major subclades are identified; (7) We propose to recognize two genera in Woodsiaceae based on deep divergence (ca. 45 Ma), morphology, chromosome number, and geographic distribution: Physematium (syn.: Cheilanthopsis, Hymenocystis, Protowoodsia, Woodsiopsis) and Woodsia (syn.: Eriosoriopsis), and Physematium is further divided into three subgenera and Woodsia into two subgenera; (8) we describe ×Woodsimatium, a hybrid genus (nothogen. nov.) between the two genera recognized. A taxonomic synopsis of the family is provided, and 15 new combinations are made.

CEUS examinations were performed on 51 patients with renal tumors. Histologic findings from surgical specimens (n = 24) or magnetic resonance imaging follow-up (n = 27) were used as reference procedures for definitive diagnosis. Diffuse heterogeneous/homogeneous enhancement and quick peripheralnodularenhancement were found to be characteristic patterns in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Dotlike or diffuse heterogeneous/homogeneous enhancement and slow peripheral nodular enhancement were observed as typical enhancement patterns in angiomyolipoma. The results show that CEUS combined with conventional ultrasound significantly improves diagnostic confidence. The sensitivity for RCC diagnosis with this imaging approach was 86% and the specificity was 93%. Both positive and negative predictive values of detection were 90% and the overall accuracy was 90%.

Renal microcirculation perfusion before and during CPB was assessed by CEU. Time-intensity curve (TIC) were derived from three region of interest (ROI) using QLAB post-analysis software. Parameters such as TIC curve wash in slope (A), area under curve (AUC), peak intensity (DPI) as well as time to peak intensity (TTP) were then calculated. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound showed a significant reduction (or elongation) of perfusion parameter (A, AUC, DPI, TTP) in all three regions (superficial cortex, deep cortex and medulla) during cardiopulmonary bypass in comparison with normal cardiac cycle. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has a dramatic impact on renal microcirculation in pediatric patients which manifest as global reduction in renal perfusion as well as significant region perfusion difference.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEU) could...

Seventy-eight patients with carotid atherosclerotic plaques were examined with real-time CEUS. The perfusion modes of neovascularization in relation to the carotid arteriosclerotic plaques were identified. Patients were categorized into four groups according to their plaque echo. Five patients with serious atherosclerotic carotid artery disease received carotid endarterectomy. The intra-plaque neovascularization recorded by CEUS were validated by post-surgery pathology examinations of the tissues. In routing ultrasound examinations, 23 (29. 49%) plaques were identified with low-echo, 30 (38.46%) with mixed echo, 20 (25. 64%) with equal-echo, and 5 (6. 41%) with high-echo. The CEUS imaging revealed 60 carotid atherosclerotic plaques (76. 9%) with various degrees of enhancement in intra-plaque neovascularization. The thickness of plaques was correlated ...
