These mergers may impact civil servants’ psychological adjustment. We developed the Municipal Merger Stress Questionnaire (MMSQ) to measure the impact of the municipal mergers and collected responses from 570 employees who had experienced a municipal merger (Study 1). We examined the relationships among the impact of municipal merger, Stress Responses, Self-concept (self-esteem and interpersonal dependency), and Social Support (Study 2). Two factors (Increased Workload and Worthlessness) were derived from the MMSQ in Study 1. Additionally, a structural equation model showed that the impact of the loss of value of their job (Worthlessness) related to the psychological stress responses, while job discretion did not differentiate an entire stress situation in Study 2. The result implies that psychological aspects of interventi...

Nevertheless, many people still have positive foresight because of the influence of resilience, which aid one in overcoming specific adversities. We examined the relationship between self-esteem, future time perspective, and resilience. Japanese high school students (N = 1427; boys = 596, girls = 831) completed a questionnaire comprising self-esteem, time perspective, and resilience scales. A series of path analyses demonstrated that self-esteem facilitated future hope and mitigated present feeling of emptiness. Furthermore, resilience mediated the relationship between self-esteem and time perspective. Self-directedness of resilience increased future hope. Additionally, being optimistic could positively influence foresight; however, there were sex differences in its function. Among boys, being optimistic increased future hope; among girls, being optimistic decreased present emptiness. These results suggest that gaining the ability to overcome adversities may affect being positive about one's future. However, youths should be taught how to relax and think positively, not only to enhance future hope, but also to mitigate emptiness.

Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to examine the factor structure of the BIPM (Study 1) among 464 university students, and confirmatory factor analysis examined the validity and reliability of the BIPM (Study 2) among 321 university students. Additionally, the mitigation effect of psychological mindedness (PM) for depressive symptoms was examined. The results showed a two-factor structure (Interest and Insight) similar to the original BIPM. The BIPM was negatively correlated with the alexithymia score and positively correlated with the Psychological Mindedness Scale and Openness. It was also significantly correlated with future depressive symptoms. The BIPM is useful for measuring PM in the Japanese population. Additionally, this study suggests clinical applications of PM in psychotherapy and the treatment effect mechanism of cognitive behavioral therapy.

Both independent and interdependent self-construals can coexist within one individual [7,8], and the extent to which individuals prioritize one over the other is relatively consistent throughout time, and it characterizes who they are [9,10]. People who put higher priority on independent self-construal tend to use direct coping strategies that result in the reduction of depression and anxiety [11]. Similarly, Diener et al. reported the correlation between independent tendency and subjective well-being [12]. Additionally, several researchers found indirect influences of independent and interdependent self-construal on outcomes such as depression and happiness in a positive way [13,14]. In light of these literatures, independent self-construal may have positive effects on psychological symptoms including depression and anxiety at least. However, it is obvious that one's self-construal is not only one factor that explains one's mental health as there are also other contributing factors such as group dynamics and office atmosphere which could influence one's cognition [15].

An exploratory factor analysis conducted on a randomly split half of the sample yielded a five-factor structure. The robustness of this structure were confirmed by a confirmatory factor analysis on the other half of the sample, as compared to three-and four-factor models. The factors Task Solution, Social Diversion, and Distraction were encompassed by the higher-level factor, Actionoriented Coping. The factors Rumination and Aggression were represented by the higher level factor, Emotionoriented Coping. Emotion-oriented Coping significantly predicted depressive mood five weeks later in a prospective study of the same sample, while Action-oriented Coping predicted significantly reduced depressive mood. These results suggest that the five-factor structure of the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations is valid for Japanese young adults and adolescents, and that action-oriented coping is an adaptive coping strategy.

The subjects of this study were 467 Japanese university students. The JIDI was administered at Time 1, and the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation-Outcome Measure (CORE-OM) was administered at Time 2 for the purpose of assessing dysphoric mood and life functioning. NLEs occurring between Times 1 and 2 were evaluated. The three-factor structure of the JIDI was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. The structural equation modeling demonstrated that of the three factors, only one, "emotional reliance", predisposed individuals to dysphoric mood and poor life functioning, both directly and indirectly, via interpersonal NLEs. Although the other two factors did not increase vulnerability to interpersonal NLEs or dysphoric mood, "lack of social self-confidence" worsened general functioning, and "assertion of autonomy" led to poor functioning in close relationships, both directly. Furthermore, "assertion of autonomy" decreased anxiety levels. As to gender differences, simultaneous analysis of multi-groups showed that female subjects were more likely to become anxious following interpersonal NLEs.

This study confirmed psychometric properties and stability of the factor structure and differences among models for various age groups. The CISS of the Japanese version and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL) were administered to a sample of 781 Japanese workers. Using factor analysis, three-, four-, and five-factor models were examined. Simultaneous multiple-group analysis was conducted using samples of 568 workers and 507 students. The five-factor model was more robust than the original three-and four-factor models. Reliabilities and applicability for a wide age range were confirmed. In terms of predictive validity, symptoms of somatization, obsessive-compulsiveness, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, and anxiety were positively related with Rumination coping.

In a sample of 466 working people, self-esteem, interpersonal dependency, job stressor, and depression were assessed at 2 points of time. A structural equation model (SEM) was created to differentiate the trait component of interpersonal dependency, depression and the state component of interpersonal dependency, depression. The model revealed that self-esteem influenced trait interpersonal dependency and trait depression but not state interpersonal dependency or depression. Setting a latent variable as a trait component to differentiate trait and state in interpersonal dependency and depression in SEM was found to be effective both statistically and clinically.

This study examined the statistical properties, particularly the factor structure, of the Psychological Mindedness Scale (PMS) in a non-clinical Japanese sample through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The relationship between PMS and depression was also examined for predictive validity. The results suggested that the PMS tested on a Japanese sample contains the following four factors: (a) belief in the benefits of discussing one's problems; (b) access to feelings; (c) openness to new ideas and capacity to change; and (d) interest in the meaning and motivation of own and others' behavior. Whereas the total PM score and Factors 2 and 3 had negative correlations with depression, there was a positive correlation between Factor 4 and depression. The 4-factor structure of the scale is deemed to be applicable to the Japanese population.

The authors examined the relationship between selfefficacy, rumination, and depression in Japanese nursing students. The result implied that stress management should focus on controlling the degree of rumination rather than self-efficacy in order to efficiently maintain the mental health of Japanese nursing students.
