Our potential study for PV systems in Indonesia showed that off-grid PV systems could generate 1600 GWh/year, grid-connected PV 37 TWh/year, which is more than 26% of the electricity consumption in Indonesia 2010. Given this enormous potential, distributed islands and a solar irradiation of more than 4.4 kWh/m2.day, PV systems could be an appropriate solution for electrification in both urban, rural and remote areas. Evidence for this was found by a PV pilot plant of 34 kWp in Jayapura in Papua showing good performance ratios up to 90%. Stakeholders were assessed and user perception was evaluated by questionnaires in East Timor and Papua indicating support from more than 50% of the local parties and people. To stimulate the development of a PV market a knowledge center has been established at ITB. Therefore ITB offers now master courses on renewable energy with focus on solar energy. All results originate from a 3-year project of the Dutch government on capacity building for solar PV systems involving universities, companies and WWF.

To potentially save money, an alternative solution using phase change material (PCM) is proposed. PCM contained properly is reusable, thus reducing expenses for fishermen. Eutectic potassium Chloride (KCl) solution is utilized as PCM, which has melting temperature of -10.7 °C and heat of fusion of 253 kJ/kg. The PCM is used to substitute ice as the currently primary source to chill fish in storage. The solution is contained in an aluminium-foil zip-lock bags, each containing 670 grams of solution. The experiment uses two Polystyrene boxes, one containing 10 pouches of eutectic KCl solutions as PCM and the other containing ice cubes with the same mass. Two kg of fish is stored for 24 hours in each box. Thermal analysis shows that the box temperature containing KCl solution is steady for the 24 hours of experiment. Starting to be steady at -2.8 °C from room temperature, the box temp...

By using the average wave energy data of 21-year WAVEWATCH-III (WW3) model, some areas were discovered to have a great potential for the wave energy generation. This present study was evaluating the selected Wave Energy Converters (WEC) and determining their capability to do the energy capture in the potential site of the Indonesian seas. The data of WW3 indicate the energy flux of OWE in Indonesia reached to 74.65 kW/m. The case study was conducted in the present research placed in an area of the Java Island called Cidaun, with energy flux about 42.41 kW/m. One of the Heaving Device type was used for assessing the practical energy and to analyze its development in Indonesia with certain limitations; a single round float and diameter device about two meters. The annual energy extracted from the designated WEC was approximately reached 119 GWh. Furthermore, the levelized cost of ener...

It was powered by 6.66 kWp of solar PV, 19.2 kVAh battery storage, as well as 2 kW of solar ice maker machine, and connected into the utility grid (PLN). Solar energy is applied in this system to minimize utility grid consumption, which is produced by a diesel generator. The hierarchy of the energy supply was PV, batteries, and PLN, respectively. The system is capable to produce 180 kg of ice per production cycle, with a production cycle duration of roughly 20–27 hours. On cloudy days, the renewable energy penetration is around 15–19%. The COP of the ice maker machine is 1.02 and 1.45 for production cycle with ambient brine water temperature and low brine water temperature, respectively.

Yet, improving its electrochemical capacitance and cycle life remains a challenge for high-performance supercapacitors exceeding the current state-of-the-art. The fabrication of PEDOT composites with carbon nanomaterials and metal oxides is the commonly used approach to enhance capacitance and stability. This work discusses a comparative study to fabricate highly stable PEDOT derivative electrodes with remarkable specific capacitance via a straightforward electrochemical polymerization technique. The hydroxymethyl PEDOT (PEDOTOH) doped with perchlorate in a dichloromethane (DCM) solvent (197 F g−1) exhibits superior per...

Energy saving in Air Conditioning (AC) system is quite important for climate-change mitigation, s... more Energy saving in Air Conditioning (AC) system is quite important for climate-change mitigation, since AC system consumes around 60% of building electricity. Air conditioning technology also deals with ozone depletion problem. Chilled-water AC system needs smaller amount of primary refrigerant, so it can minimize possible CFC or HCFC (Ozone Depleting Substances) emission into the atmosphere. Latent heat transportation system applied in chilledwater system open opportunity to save energy. In the second aspect, integration of Phase Change Material (PCM) in building wall can increase heat capacity of the wall and reduce and stabilize indoor temperature. Both technologies can mutually contribute in reducing AC energy consumption. In this paper, application of some PCMs in chilled water system and wall model are reported.

One of the efforts in minimizing energy consumption chiller type air conditioning system is the u... more One of the efforts in minimizing energy consumption chiller type air conditioning system is the use of phase changing material in secondary refrigerant. Secondary refrigerant functions to obtain heat from the air to cool a room and to release heat in chiller evaporator. Based on working temperature of secondary refrigerant, the fluid can flow in liquid form, and can also be in fluid solid form or slurry at the temperature of its phase change. This research studies the effect of temperature toward flow characteristics, with the parameter analyzed being the pressure decrease and friction coefficient. Besides that, in order to support data analysis, it was initiated by viscosity testing, density and concentration of solid mass. Data taken were viscosity, density, solid mass concentrate, and pressure difference found in copper pipe. Data were taken for several fluid temperatures, and at pressure decrease was added by variation of flow speed. Hydrate salt tested were CaCl2 and Na2HPO4. Viscosity and density increased with the decrease in temperature. The formation of solid particles within phase change temperature range also gave an impact on the increase in the value of viscosity and density. Pressure drop increased when using hydrate salt fluid. The use of CaCl2 solution resulted in the highest pressure decrease. This salt hydrate has far higher viscosity and density compared to water. This has an effect toward an increase in pressure drop. This increase started to be significant in the phase change temperature area in which solid particle started to form. The same thing happened in the friction coefficient value.

Photovoltaic (PV) experiences an internal problem of efficiency reduction due to temperature increase. The use of phase change material as a passive cooling has been conducted to address this problem. In this study, yellow petroleum jelly is used as passive cooling on photovoltaic. The jelly performs effectively in reducing the temperature of PV. Therefore, the application of yellow petroleum jelly on PV is proven to suppress PV temperature, increase the efficiency and the power of the PV.

By looking at that number, it is clear that effort to suppress building energy consumption should be directed to air conditioning system. Recently, phase change substances, such as ice slurry, receive broad attention since the substances has ability to save energy in hydronic cooling system. Previous experiments by author showed that certain phase change material, i.e. trimethylolethane trihydrate, is able to save energy of a chiller. However, in Indonesia, the material is quite expensive. In this research, applicability of some lower-price materials, i.e. mixture of vegetables oil and biodiesel, as phase change material in secondary refrigerant were evaluated. Some thermal characteristics, such as freezing and melting temperatures, and also latent heat of the oils are explained in this paper.

Rheological characteristics of trimethylolethane (TME) clathratehydrate slurry treated with drag-... more Rheological characteristics of trimethylolethane (TME) clathratehydrate slurry treated with drag-reducing surfactants were investigated. Friction coefficients and apparent viscosities were measured when the concentration of TME and its hydrate fraction treated with and without dragreducing surfactants were changed in several steps. From the results, it is found that the surfactant addition causes effective drag reduction in a pipe flow when the hydrate fraction becomes high, while effective drag reduction disappears in the cases of low hydrate fraction. The results of viscosity measurements indicate that the TME molecules disturb the formation of shear-induced structures (SIS) causing drag reduction phenomena. To investigate this interaction between TME and surfactant micelles, the effect of TME concentration on viscosity and relaxation time of solutions was discussed. From this, it was found out that there exists a critical concentration of TME on the formation of SIS and that it becomes larger as shear rate increases. Thus, we conclude that this interaction between TME and micellar structures causes less drag reduction for the cases of low hydrate fraction, while the drag reduction appears in cases of high hydrate fraction because TME concentration in liquid phase becomes small.

The energy resources can be from solar, water, biomass or biofuel. Many villagers still use diesel generators to produce electricity in their villages. It is considered expensive because fuel price in rural areas increases 2-3 times than the normal price due to transportation cost. Hybrid system using renewable energy resources is one of the solutions to produce electricity in affordable cost for rural area.
