Steril edilen tohumlar % 3 (w/v) sükroz ve % 0.7 (w/v) agar ile her biri 1 ppm, 3 ppm, 5 ppm and 7 ppm konsantrasyonlarında olan potasyum humat, bor humat ve demir humat içeren Murashige and Skoog temel besiyerinde kültüre alınmıştır. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of department and years spent in program on el... more The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of department and years spent in program on elementary and secondary mathematics pre-service teachers’ mathematics teaching efficacy beliefs. The study was conducted with 318 pre-service teachers enrolled in elementary and secondary mathematics teacher education programs in the United States. The Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (MTEBI, Enochs, Smith, & Huinker, 2000) was used to measure the participants’ teaching efficacy beliefs. The results show that there was significant effect of department and years spent in the department on pre-service teachers’ personal mathematics teaching efficacy scores. No significant effect of the department and years spent in the department of mathematics teaching outcome expectancy scores was observed. The results were discussed and teaching ideas for teacher educators were suggested.

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine what prospective mathematics teachers n... more The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine what prospective mathematics teachers noticed with respect to the student roles underlined in the elementary mathematics program when video-case based pedagogy was employed in teacher education. The theoretical framework employed in this study was Learning to Notice framework developed by van Es and Sherin (2002). The data was collected through reflection papers and interviews from 15 senior prospective teachers enrolled at a large state university. The findings indicated that prospective teachers could notice several issues related to student roles underlined in the elementary mathematics program when they were provided with a learning environment to analyze real mathematics classrooms.

Bu çalışmada ortaokul matematik öğretmen adaylarının açı kavramını tanımlama ve şeklini çizmeye d... more Bu çalışmada ortaokul matematik öğretmen adaylarının açı kavramını tanımlama ve şeklini çizmeye dair bilgileri incelenmiştir. Bu amaçla Türkiye’nin güneyindeki bir üniversitenin ilköğretim matematik öğretmenliği bölümü bahar döneminde geometri dersi alan toplam 151 katılımcıdan veri toplanmıştır. Veri toplama sürecinde katılımcılara temel geometrik kavramların tanım ve çizimlerinin istendiği bir bilgi toplama formu uygulanmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında bu formda yer alan açı kavramına dair veriler analiz edilmiştir. Veriler nitel olarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmanın bulgularına göre katılımcıların açı çizimlerinde genellikle ölçüye veya iç bölgeye işaret ettikleri, tanımlarının da bu yönde olduğu görülmüştür. Öyle ki katılımcılar tanımlarının büyük çoğunluğunda açıyı ölçü, yer, bölge veya eğim olarak ifade etmişlerdir. Diğer taraftan katılımcıların tanım yaparken kullandıkları matematiksel dilin sıkıntılı olduğu görülmüştür.

In the present study, it was aimed to explore the extent to which teachers' use of student thinki... more In the present study, it was aimed to explore the extent to which teachers' use of student thinking in mathematics classrooms. Two mathematics teachers working at public middle schools participated in the study. One of the teachers had six years of teaching experience and a master's degree in teaching mathematics. The other teacher was an inexperienced teacher with two years of teaching experience. Five lessons of each teacher, ten in total, were video-recorded. Transcripts of the video recordings were analyzed to answer two questions: Do the teachers attend to and remediate student difficulty? and To what extent does each teacher use student thinking? Analysis of the transcripts showed that the teacher with the graduate degree received higher scores with regards to attending to and remediating student difficulty, the second teacher received considerably lower scores on these aspects of teaching. It was observed that the first teacher frequently attended to student thinking and their answers regardless of correctness and made use of his lesson by turning them into an opportunity as well as constructing the target concepts, question types and descriptions. On the other hand, the second teacher failed to take student thinking further rather than using them and sometimes even disregarded their ideas.

The purpose of this study was to investigate first year elementary mathematics teacher education ... more The purpose of this study was to investigate first year elementary mathematics teacher education students' knowledge of prism. For this goal, the participants were asked to define the geometric concept of prism. The participants were 158 first year elementary mathematics teacher education students from a public university in Southern Turkey. The researchers analyzed the participants' definitions of prism. Additionally, 12 of the participants were selected for semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed via content and frequency analysis techniques. Based on the content analysis, the themes that each participant used were determined. After this evaluation, the frequency of each of the themes was calculated. The findings indicated that the participants experienced difficulties in defining the concept of prism. It was also found out that the participants could not adequately use the mathematical language and define the concept.

Also, the researchers compare on-line and face-toface discussions. Initial findings indicate that both on-line and face-to-face discussions of the case study promoted questioning, answering and informing among the participants.

The aim of this research is to determine the quality of mathematics teaching in middle school cla... more The aim of this research is to determine the quality of mathematics teaching in middle school classes. The research is qualitatively designed. The study group of the research is two middle school mathematics teachers. Within the scope of the research, 5 consecutive lessons of each of these middle school mathematics teachers were videotaped. The dialogues in the video recordings have been transcribed. Mathematical Quality of Instruction (MQI) scale was used for the analysis of the data obtained. This scale includes elements of mathematical content and is based on teacher-student-content relationship. In the scale, in determining the mathematical quality of instruction, many factors such as the density of the mathematical content in the lesson, the mathematical language, the way the teacher intervenes in student mistakes and errors, and the active participation of the students were taken into account. According to the findings obtained from the study, it was observed that the levels of one of the teachers' lessons were high in all dimensions of the MQI scale, and the level of the lessons of the other teacher was medium. It has been seen that İsmail teacher's students are busy in his lessons, students are given opportunities to practice, approaches that will improve their mathematical skills are used, he creates an environment where his students can express their ideas comfortably and justify their claims, and he supports the active participation of all his students. On the other hand, in the lessons of Hüseyin teacher, it has been seen that the operational information is generally given correctly, the students can express their thoughts easily, but a detailed interpretation is not made so that their reasoning skills can develop, and the students' ideas are weak in considering and using them. This result shows that the dialogues in the classroom, the roles that students have assumed within the lesson related to a subject or task, and the level of the teacher's teaching practices are important factors in determining the quality of teaching. * Bu makale birinci yazarın, "Matematik öğretim kalitesi ölçeği aracılığıyla ortaokul sınıflarında matematik öğretiminin kalitesinin belirlenmesi" başlıklı, ikinci ve üçüncü yazarların danışmanlığındaki yüksek lisans tezinden üretilmiştir. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe primary and upper elementary mathematics t... more The purpose of this study was to identify and describe primary and upper elementary mathematics teachers' views about the new elementary mathematics curriculum (NC). Data was collected from 22 teachers working in a district of Çorum through a semi-structure interview protocol and analyzed by qualitative methods. Participants claimed that the NC had positive influence on students' learning, teachers' and students' roles, and students' motivation. However, lack of time, materials, and students' prerequisite skills negatively influenced the NC's implementation. Teachers claimed that the NC did not consider local differences and teachers' guide book was insufficient in helping them. The study showed that although the teachers adopted the NC's ideas, more effective inservice training was needed to ensure its successful implementation

Mathematical Quality of Instruction (MQI) scale was used for the analysis of the data obtained. This scale includes elements of mathematical content and is based on teacher-student-content relationship. In the scale, in determining the mathematical quality of instruction, many factors such as the density of the mathematical content in the lesson, the mathematical language, the way the teacher intervenes in student mistakes and errors, and the active participation of the students were taken into account. According to the findings obtained from the study, it was observed that the levels of one of the teachers' lessons were high in all dimensions of the MQI scale, and the level of the lessons of the other teacher was medium. It has been seen that İsmail teacher's students are busy in his lessons, students are given opportunities to practice, approaches that will improve their mathematical skills are used, he creates an environment where his students can express their ideas comfortably and justify their claims, and he supports the active participation of all his students. On the other hand, in the lessons of Hüseyin teacher, it has been seen that the operational information is generally given correctly, the students can express their thoughts easily, but a detailed interpretation is not made so that their reasoning skills can develop, and the students' ideas are weak in considering and using them. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe primary and upper elementary mathematics t... more The purpose of this study was to identify and describe primary and upper elementary mathematics teachers' views about the new elementary mathematics curriculum (NC). Data was collected from 22 teachers working in a district of Çorum through a semi-structure interview protocol and analyzed by qualitative methods. Participants claimed that the NC had positive influence on students' learning, teachers' and students' roles, and students' motivation. However, lack of time, materials, and students' prerequisite skills negatively influenced the NC's implementation. Teachers claimed that the NC did not consider local differences and teachers' guide book was insufficient in helping them. The study showed that although the teachers adopted the NC's ideas, more effective inservice training was needed to ensure its successful implementation
