Arable land, grassland, and forest land coexist in the saline-alkali reclamation area of the Yellow River Delta (YRD), China. Such different land uses strongly influence the services of ecosystem to induce soil degradation and carbon loss. The objective of this study is to evaluate the variation of soil texture, aggregates stability, and soil carbon affected by land uses. For each land use unit, we collected soil samples from five replicated plots from “S” shape soil profiles to the depth of 50 cm (0–5, 5–10, 10–20, 20–30, and 30–50 cm). The results showed that the grassland had the lowest overall sand content of 39.98–59.34% in the top 50 cm soil profile. The content of soil aggregates > 0.25 mm (R0.25), mean weight diameter and geometric mean diameter were significantly higher in grassland than those of the arable and forest land. Humic acid urea (HAU) and polyaspartic acid urea (PAU) are two similar synergistic nitrogen fertilizers. METHODS: Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and carbon-13-nuclear magnetic resonance (13 C-NMR) were used to determine the loading of urea-N into humic acid (HA) and polyaspartic acid (PA). Thermal stability and physical adsorption properties of HAU and PAU were assessed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface measurement. The soil incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of HAU and PAU on nitrogen transformation and gaseous nitrogen loss compared with commercial urea. RESULTS: Nitrogen transformation from HAU and PAU was slowed down compared with urea. After 90 days of incubation, HAU and PAU reduced the cumulative ammonia (NH 3) volatilization (by 9.70% and 6.30%, respectively) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission (by 40.48% and 43.00%, respectively) from soil compared with the urea-alone treatment. CONCLUSION: HAU and PAU could improve the nitrogen use efficiency.

In this study, we explored the influences of amendment supplemented with and without urea on the physicochemical properties as well as microbial activities of acidic soil from Jiaodong over a 120-day period. With the amendment, the electronic conductivity and pH of soils changed. The amendment treatment significantly reduced inorganic nitrogen content and increased microbial biomass nitrogen content during the whole incubation period. The microbial biomass, activities of phenol oxidase and dehydrogenase were increased by the addition of amendments, while the soil respiration, catalase and urease activity were declined. Our results indicated that application of byproduct amendment could improve the chemical and biological properties of the acidic orchard soils from Jiaodong over a short time period of investigation.

The high shear flow generated by a homogenizer is expected to affect the size of vesicles. Hence, it should be possible to control the size and dispersion of vesicles by tuning the shear. In this study, the influence of shear on the vesicle phase was studied by measuring the rheology and conductivity of a solution made of the nonionic surfactant trideceth-5, a polyethylene glycol ether of tridecyl alcohol with an average number of ethylene oxide of 5, and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate. It was found that when shear was applied by a homogenizer, the bilayers of the multilamellar vesicles were stripped off and became unilamellar vesicles, which decreased the viscoelasticity of the system. However, because of the pressure provided by the homogenizer, the newly formed unilamellar vesicles were small and the relative distance between them was large. As a result, the vesicles were no longer crowded and could easily pass each other under shear. This is why the unilamellar vesicles generated by the homogenizer had low viscoelasticity and flow birefringence. Additionally, it took a long time for the unilamellar vesicles to relax back to the original state.

Byproduct amendments (1125, 2250, 4500 and 9000 kg ha-1) and lime 2250 kg ha-1 was applied in the acidic soil. Results showed that both byproduct amendments and lime significantly increased the pH, EC and enzyme activities of soil. The by-product amendments inhibited microbial biomass carbon and soil respiration. Nevertheless, the lime-treated soil had a much more higher level of CO2 emission than the by-product amendments-treated soil. Compared to the by-product amendments-treated soil, the lime-treated soil had the higher pH, peroxidase activity, phenol oxidase activity and invertase activity. Therefore, lime might be a better choice over by-product amendments to improve che...

Research paper thumbnail of The phase transition from L3 phase to vesicles and rheological properties of a nonionic surfactant mixture system

The L 3 phase can be transferred to planar lamellar phase after the bilayer was protonated by the formic acid formed through the hydrolysis of methylformate. The addition of surface charge into the nonionic L 3 phase through electrostatic repulsion on the ionic head groups will suppress the Helfrich undulation and induce the transition to planar lamellar phase. The planar lamellar phase can be transformed into multilamellar vesicles under shear. Rheological properties show that both of the storage modulus and the loss modulus of the lamellar phase were increased with the increment of surface charge density. The phase transition from L 3 phase to vesicles was characterized by rheological measurements, 2 H NMR spectra, and transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations. To our best knowledge, this is the first example of a controlled phase transition in nonionic surfactant mixtures through protonation and shear forces. The procedure provides a direction on how to achieve phase transition in surfactant solution by changing the conditions and an application of phase transition of controlled materials.

However, the potential relationship of HIF-1a-AEG-1 pathway in human aortic smooth muscle cell (HASMC) has not been reported. In the present study, in-vitro assays were utilized to explore the potential impact of HIF-1a-AEG-1 signaling on HASMC phenotype. Here, we found that HIF-1a expression was up-regulated in the media of thoracic aortic dissection tissues as compared with normal aortic tissues, and was associated with increased apoptotic SMCs and decreased AEG-1 expression. Mechanically, hypoxia promoted the expression of HIF-1a by PI3K-AKT pathway in HASMCs; HIF-1a further suppressed the expressions of AEG-1, a-SMA and SM22a, and promoted osteopontin (OPN) expression. Functionally, HIF-1a inhibited the proliferation and migration of HASMCs. However, si-HIF-1a or Akt inhibitor abrogated H...

The transition from worm-like micelles to vesicles can take place in certain cationic–anionic (ca... more The transition from worm-like micelles to vesicles can take place in certain cationic–anionic (catanionic) systems such as the tetradecyltrimethylammonium laurate (TTAL) aqueous solution that is prepared by adding hydrochloric acid (HCl). It appears that the lamellar phase of 100 mmol · L−1 of TTAL aqueous solution should go through a series of phase transition processes under different pH conditions, in which the content of HCl is gradually increased. When the pH value was modulated to about 7, the lamellar phase became worm-like micelle phase. By further increasing the content of HCl, the worm-like micelle phase tends to separate into two phases. Specifically, the top phase seems to be turbid structure, whereas the lower phase is still worm-like micelle phase. In the worm-like micelle one phase (pH = 7.04), a phase transition from worm-like micelles to vesicles is evident with the increase in temperature. Therefore, such phase transition processes could be readily monitored by turbidity or rheological analyses. Dynamic light scattering and cryo-Transmission Electron Microscopy measurements were also employed to determine the structures before and after phase transition. Consequently, this work would yield new insights to understand the phase transition mechanism of catanionic surfactants induced by pH change. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

In this paper, the operation principle of a transformerless HAPF is introduced and analyzed, and then a double closed loop control strategy with power-line current feedback and the fifth harmonic current feedback is proposed aiming at enhancing filtering characteristics at the fifth harmonic frequency. Finally, a dc voltage regulator is designed based on the system model of dc link voltage control. Experimental results obtained from a 380 V, 20 kVA experimental prototype verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed control strategies for the transformerless hybrid filter, which has high compensation precision as well as fast dynamic response and also reduces the cost of the equipment since only two phases of power-line current are required to be detected.

2011 Twenty-Sixth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC), 2011

ABSTRACT Hybrid filters could restrain harmonic current in distribution power-line effectively an... more ABSTRACT Hybrid filters could restrain harmonic current in distribution power-line effectively and their compensation precision relies heavily on the design of current loop controllers. Since the reference and feedback signals of the current loop controller are composed by different harmonic components and the bandwidth of conventional proportional controller is limited, this controller cannot control the output current waveform without any steady-state error. In this paper, the limitation of conventional proportional controller in the application of a parallel hybrid active power filter is analyzed. Then this paper proposes a repetitive-based composite controller composed by a proportional controller inner loop and repetitive controller external loop to improve the output current waveform with the control object of the seventh-tuned LC filter, and the design method is given in detail. The proposed controller could acquire high quality power-line current waveform when used to suppress odd harmonic as well as even harmonic current, and guarantee excellent dynamic performances. Experimental results obtained from a 380 V, 20 kVA experimental prototype system validate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy.

To date, the detailed mechanisms underlying IGF-1-AEG-1 pathway-induced proliferation and apoptosis in cardiac myxoma (CM) was not reported. In the present study, we used immnohistochemistry, immunoblotting, and qRT-PCR to detect the expression profile of IGF-1 and AEG-1 in 90 CM tissues, and then cultured CM cells were subjected to si-AEG-1, in vitro, and in vivo assays. Our findings showed that IGF-1 and AEG-1 were obviously upregulated in CM tissues and markedly associated with tumor size. When CM cells were treated with si-AEG-1, si-AEG-1 attenuated IGF-1-induced CM cell growth and enhanced cell apoptosis. Functionally, HIF-1a inhibited the proliferation and migration of HASMCs. However, si-HIF-1a or Akt inhibitor abrogated H...

Research paper thumbnail of Phase Transition from Worm-Like Micelles to Vesicles Triggered by pH Value

Mechanically, we validated the expression of AEG-1, p-Erk1/2, and p-Akt increased in CM cells in response to IGF-1 treatment in a time-dependent manner. However, si-AEG-1 affected the expression of these prot...
