This study aims at comparing citizenship education within social studies education in Turkey and ... more This study aims at comparing citizenship education within social studies education in Turkey and the US. For this purpose, citizenship education learning areas in both countries are compared on gains, skills, content, and values. This research shows that social studies education in Turkey include citizenship education topics such as democracy, individual rights, duty and responsibilities whereas citizenship skills are not much accommodated. In the US on the other hand, besides citizenship knowledge such as democracy, individual rights, duties, and responsibilities, citizenship education topics such as diversity, legal issues, and citizenship skills are often emphasized.

For this purpose, Van and Bingol from Eastern Anatolia, Ankara and Kirsehir from Central Anatolia, Aydin and Istanbul from Western Anatolia were selected. As the data collection tool in the study, “views on domestic democracy form” was used. According to results of the research, it has been indicated that every students has different democracy process in their family.

In today's globalised world, many issues have become controversial. These controversial issues af... more In today's globalised world, many issues have become controversial. These controversial issues affect society and the individuals who form them. It is inevitable that these topics are brought into social studies classrooms, because this learning area is profoundly related to society. Social studies teachers' behaviours, attitudes, and professional knowledge are crucial in teaching controversial issues. The goal of this study was to investigate social studies teachers' opinions and practices regarding teaching controversial issues in Turkey. The study utilised a mixed method in which both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used. The quantitative data for this study were collected from 646 social studies teachers in different cities in Turkey. The qualitative data were collected through observation of eight social studies teachers who were working in schools situated in areas at four different socioeconomic levels in the Kirsehir province. The content analysis method was used to analyse the qualitative data. The results indicated that there are differences between the teachers' opinions and their practices in teaching controversial issues. The study also found that teachers are faced with academic, professional, and emotional challenges in teaching controversial issues.

Bu çalışmada sosyal bilimler lisesi öğrencilerinin ulusal ve uluslararası problemler hakkında ne ... more Bu çalışmada sosyal bilimler lisesi öğrencilerinin ulusal ve uluslararası problemler hakkında ne düşündükleri, bu konular hakkında nereden bilgi edindikleri ve bu problemlerin çözümüne olan inançlarını tespit etmek amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma desenlerinden durum çalışması kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubunu Kırşehir İlinde yer alan Sosyal Bilimler Lisesinde öğrenim gören 14, 15 ve 16 yaşlarındaki öğrenciler oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama aracı iki boyutlu olarak tasarlanmıştır. İlk boyutta öğrencilerden Türkiye ile ilgili, ikinci boyutta ise küresel boyutta öncelikli gördükleri sorunları önem sırasına göre yazmaları istenmiş, ardından öğrencilere bu konular hakkında bilgi kaynakları ve ulusal sorunların yakın bir gelecekte çözümüne ilişkin düşünceleri sorulmuştur. Elde edilen yazılı dokümanlar içerik analizi kullanılarak çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma bulgularından elde edilen sonuçlar şu şekilde özetlenebilir: Gençler Türkiye'yi ilgilendiren en önemli problem olarak terörü görmektedirler. Türkiye açısından önemli gördükleri diğer problemlerin başında ise işsizlik ve şiddet gelmektedir. Uluslararası alanda Ortadoğu sorunu önemli bir problem olarak görülmektedir. Gençlerin dünyada önemli gördükleri diğer problemler ise savaş, açlık ve çevre sorunlarıdır.

The purpose of this study is to compare the social studies teaching curricula of Turkey and the U... more The purpose of this study is to compare the social studies teaching curricula of Turkey and the United States in terms of values education. The study is a model case study that relies upon one of the qualitative research methods. The data come from the elementary social studies curricula of both countries through the documents analysis method. The results of the study demonstrate that the social studies' curriculum of Turkey has more emphasis on individual and social values such as sensitivity, responsibility, solidarity, science, philanthropy, and patriotism, etc. On the other hand, the social studies curricula of the United States lays more emphasis on individual and social values such as sensitivity, science, responsibility, solidarity, and respect for individual rights, as well as democratic values such as diversity (difference), public good, and prevention of conflict .

The current research employing a case study, one of the qualitative research designs aims to exam... more The current research employing a case study, one of the qualitative research designs aims to examine the effects of out-of-theschool learning environments on prospective teachers' scientific attitudes. Maximum sampling, a purposeful sampling method, was employed in this research, and the study group was composed of the students attending the faculty of education. The data were collected through the "Scientific Attitudes Views Form" (SAVF) developed by the researcher, and were subject to content analysis. Consequently, it was found that out-of-the-school learning environments, especially science centers, had positive influences in students' attitudes towards science. Moreover, it was also found that the students established associations between science and daily life and that they were of the opinion that science was necessary for comprehending nature/environment and for facilitating the life. Following the application, the number of students wishing to be a scientist was seen to increase; which was supportive of the findings.

A case study, one of the qualitative research designs, was employed in this study. A group of 55 students was formed with the second and third year students of the Faculty of Education, and science cent-historical museum) were chosen for application as out-of-the-school learning environments in the application process. Categorical analysis was performed in the analyses of the data. The research results demonstrated that definition category was used most in the value of aesthetics; results category was used most in sensitivity to cultural heritage, and examples category was used most in patriotism category. The aim of this study is to identify the perceptions of democracy of primary school students, ide... more The aim of this study is to identify the perceptions of democracy of primary school students, identify the factors that affect these, and compare the results with those obtained from other countries. The research was carried out during the 2011-2012 school year with 1,667 students from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades who were chosen from 26 cities in Turkey using the stratified sampling model. The Democracy Perception Scale was used as a data collection tool. According to the findings of the study, the democratic perceptions of primary school students differ according to their sex, what grade they are in, the education and income status of their parents, and where they live. The differences were found to be within the average of the scores of Turkey and the other 28 countries' scores where the study was conducted. It was concluded that the average score for the positive items of students who lived in Turkey was low whereas the perception of democracy scores for students in Turkey was high compared to the scores of students from the 28 other countries.
