However, the heating values change widely and frequently, while there is no reliable real-time instrument to measure heating values in the process of incinerating municipal solid waste. A rapid, cost-effective, and comparative methodology was proposed to evaluate the heating values of burning MSW online based on prior knowledge, expert experience, and data-mining techniques. First, selecting the input variables of the model by analyzing the operational mechanism of circulating fluidized bed incinerators, and the corresponding heating value was classified into one of nine fuzzy expressions according to expert advice. Development of prediction models by employing four different nonlinear models was undertaken, including a multilayer perceptron neural network, a support vector machine, an adaptive neuro-f...

The measurement of emission spectrum was performed to obtain the spectral intensities of some Ar lines and the method of diagrammatic view of Boltzmann was adopted to calculate the electron temperature. The results indicated that the electron temperature dropped at different speed along with the axes of the plasma jet and rose rapidly when the current was increased, and it also rose when the flowrate of argon was increased.

Here, we investigated the chemopreventive effects of metformin on dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced colorectal carcinogenesis in diabetic SD rats following metformin treatment and the effect on Warburg effect involved in this process. Diabetic rat models were induced with high-fat feeding in combination with a low dose of Streptozotocin (STZ) and then induce colorectal cancer with a low dose of DMH. The formation of colorectal Aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and the incidence, number and size of the tumor were measured. The proliferation indices of colonic tissues were determined through Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunostaining. Then detect the expression of PK and IDH in colonic tissues using immunohistochemistry and Western blot. The enzyme activities of HK and PDH in colonic tissues were measured. The growth and expression of PK and IDH and activit...

In this study, the vitrification process based on thermal plasma technology has been employed to convert toxic incinerator fly ashes into harmless stable products. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test has been performed to evaluate the chemical resistance of the vitrified slag. The amount of heavy metals leached is much lower compared with the regulatory limit, which reveals that the contaminants are sufficiently immobilized in the silicate matrix and the produced slag satisfies the environmental standards. The microstructure, crystalline phase, as well as the density and porosity of the glass slag are also investigated. Such vitrified product with good quality has great potential to be used as a viable alternative for construction applications. These promising results indicate that thermal plasma vitrification process is very effective and reliable for stabilization, detoxification and recycling of MSWI fly ashes.

Size distribution, surface topography and lypohydrophilic properties were detailed studied. The average size of solids was 61 μm in original sludge, 31 μm in upper layer and 235 μm in bottom layer. The result shows that solvent is essential to separate oil phase into molecular light and weight fractions during centrifugation. With solvent/oil ratio increases from 1:2, 1:1, 2:1 to 5:1, molecular weight in upper layer decreases from 1044, 1043, 1020 to 846 combined with that in bottom layer increases. A model was proposed to calculate the oil residue content in solid phases after sedimentation. The findings of this paper provide information for optimizing the oil recovery and clean treatment.

Several genetic predisposing factors for PA have been identified, but they account for a small portion of cases. In this study, we sought to identify the PA genetic risk factors by focusing on causative mutations for PAs. Among the 4 affected and 17 asymptomatic members from one family with familial PA, whole-exome sequencing identified cosegregation of the PA phenotype with the heterozygous missense mutation c.4136G>T (p.Arg1379Leu) in cadherin-related 23 (CDH23). This mutation causes an amino acid substitution in the calcium-binding motif of the extracellular cadherin (EC) domains of CDH23 and is predicted to impair cell-cell adhesion. Genomic screening in a total of 12 families with familial PA (20 individuals), 125 individuals with sporadic PA, and 260 control individuals showed that 33% of the families with familial PA (4/12) and 12% of individuals with sporadic PA (15/125) harbored functional CDH23 var...

We retrospectively analyzed 178 endoscopic endonasal pituitary adenomas surgery from March 2011 to May 2014. Endonasal approach included the routine transnasal-sphenoidal approach, transnasal- maxillary sinus approach in four cases and transnasal-clivus approach in one case. According to postoperative imaging data and endocrine examination results, total removal was achieved in 129 patients (72.5%), and endocrinological remission was achieved in 38 patients with functional adenomas (44.1%). Statistical analysis of the clinical data showed that total removal rate was much closely related to tumor volume (P = 0.006), and tumor invasiveness (P < 0.001). In this study, we found tumor sizes and invasion of cavernous sinus were related to total removal rate and endocrinological remission rate; ...

Here, we quantitatively evaluated the predictive value of relative signal intensity (rSI) on T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the short-term efficacy (3 months) of SSA therapy in patients with active acromegaly and assessed the correlation between MRI rSI and expression of somatostatin receptors (SSTR). This was a retrospective review of prospectively recorded data. Ninety-two newly diagnosed patients (37 males and 55 females) with active acromegaly were recruited. All patients were treated with pre-surgical SSA, followed by reassessment and transspenoidal surgery. rSI values were generated by calculating the ratio of SI in the tumor to the SI of normal frontal white matter. The Youden indices were calculated to determine the optimal cutoff of rSI to determine the efficacy of SSA. The correlation between rSI and expression of SSTR2/5 was analyzed by the Spearman ran...

Methods The DR5 receptor of SMMC-7721 cells was detected by flow cytometry (FCM). For further experimental application, SMMC-7721 cells were treated with proper dose of mDRA-6, nimesulide, or mDRA-6 plus 200 μmol/L nimesulide; untreated SMMC-7721 cells were comparably set as control. Cytotoxicity was tested by MTT assay; cell morphology was examined using Hoechst 33258 staining; and apoptosis was determined by FCM. Results The positive rate of DR5 on SMMC-7721 was 95.0%. Either mDRA-6 or nimesulide alone induces SMMC-7721 cell death in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment of 1,600 ng/mL mDRA-6 for 12h led to a cell-death rate of 35.0%, while an increased cell-death rate (91.1%) was found under the same condition of mDRA-6 treatment supplemented with 200 μmol/L nimesulide. Hoechst 33258 and Annexin V/PI staining confirmed apoptosis as the main cause of this anti-tumor response. Conclusion Both mDRA-6 and nimesulide can induce apoptosis of SMMC-7721 cells, and they have synergistic anti-tumor activities against SMMC-7721.

It has been reported that SMC1A is mutated in some cancer types, leading to genomic instability and abnormal cell growth. In this study, we investigated the role of SMC1A in human glioma. We found that SMC1A was expressed at abnormally high levels in human glioma tissue and in cultured U251 glioma cells. Knocking down SMC1A expression in U251 cells with SMC1A-targeted interfering RNAs inhibited cell growth and induced G2/M cell cycle arrest. Furthermore, expression of the cell cycle associated gene CCNB1IP1 was dramatically increased, whereas expression of Cyclin B1 was decreased in SMC1A-deficienct U251 cells. These results suggest that SMC1A upregulation is involved in the pathogenesis of glioma.

The aim of this study was to determine whether MRI signal intensity (SI) was correlated to the consistency or blood supply of pituitary macroadenoma. Forty eight pituitary macroadenoma patients were underwent preoperative MRI, including precontrast and contrast-enhanced (CE) T1-spin echo (T1-SE) imaging, CE-sampling perfection with application-optimized contrasts by using different flip angle evolutions (SPACE) imaging, and perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI). The tumor consistency and blood supply were determined by neurosurgeons. The expression of collagen IV and MIB-1 was detected with immunohistology. The correlation of the relative SI (rSI) values (tumor to normal frontal white matter SI) and PWI data to the tumor consistency, blood supply, and the expression level of collagen IV and MIB-1 was statistically studied by Kruskal-Wallis rank test (K-W test). A significant correlation was observed between the tumor consistency and the rSI on precontrast T1-SE imaging (P = 0.004) but not on CE T1-SE and CE SPACE imaging. The expression of collagen IV was also significantly associated with rSI on T1-SE imaging (P = 0.010). The blood supply was correlated with the relative CBV (rCBV) (P = 0.030). In addition, the expression of MIB-1 was correlated with rSI of CE T1-SE imaging (P = 0.007). Our results suggest that T1-SE imaging may be a simple and useful method for predicting consistency of PA. CBV value can provide helpful information for assessing the blood supply of pituitary macroadenoma.

Its moisture content can be subdivided into two forms: free water (surface adsorption water) and bound water, i.e., interparticle, capillary, adhesion and internal adsorption water. The effect on moisture distribution of three distinct dispersants was studied through thermal drying and TG-DSC analysis. A new test method combining thermal drying and bond strength analysis was put forward for a thorough moisture distribution. The new method showed reasonable results and arrives at the same conclusion as the TG-DSC method. The addition of dispersants increased the free water content and decreased the bound water content, in particular those of interparticle and capillary water. Also there was a slight decrease in total moisture, compared to CWS prepared without dispersant. The moisture distribution showed its biggest change with dispersant CLS (calcium lignosulfonate), followed by dispersant NDF (a co-polymer of methylene naphthalene sulfonate, styrene sulfonate and maleate), and ended up with NNO (sodium methylene bis-naphthalene sulfonate).

The clinical benefit of surgery for treatment of deep-seated cerebral cavernous malformations (CC... more The clinical benefit of surgery for treatment of deep-seated cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) is still a matter of debate. Although the surgical removal of CCMs is widely accepted, the benefits of reducing the rate of haemorrhage must be balanced against the risk of peri-operative morbidity. Here, we provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of the clinical benefits of surgery for treating deeply localised CCMs. A comprehensive search of PubMed and Embase was conducted to identify relevant studies. The rate and a 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to measure the risk of haemorrhage and adverse outcomes. A total of 34 cohort studies reporting surgeries on CCMs were included in our analysis. Overall, the average post-surgical haemorrhage rate was 1.0% (95% CI: 0.7-1.4%). Nine per cent (95% CI: 6.9-11.3%) of the patients developed adverse events at follow-up following the surgical resection of deep-seated CCMs. The percentage of transient neural defects following surgica...

To identify genetic susceptibility loci for sporadic pituitary adenoma, we performed a three-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) in the Han Chinese population. We first analyzed genome-wide SNP data in 771 pituitary adenoma cases and 2,788 controls and then carried forward the promising variants for replication in another 2 independent sets (2,542 cases and 3,620 controls in total). We identified three new susceptibility loci below the genome-wide significance threshold (P…
