Sucrose was used as a carbon source, using the means of Precursor body carbon, sucrose and titanium powder mixing at high temperature after the heat treatment furnace for carbonization. Finally, the titanium powder was wrapped by the carbon, so the composite powder was mixed more uniform and could react more fully. TiCN coatings could not be synthesized with the composite powder prepared the temperatures of 150°C and 250°C, because the sucrose was not carbonized totally and could not carbonize to synthesize TiCN with Ti and N2 in the process of spraying. TiCN coatings were prepared by spraying the composite powder under heat treatment at 350°C and which composed of Ti and C at a ratio of 1:3. The phase compositions, the morphologies, the hardness and the microstructures were analyzed. The results showed that TiCN coating was con...

Research paper thumbnail of Energy trading between microgrids towards individual cost and social welfare optimization

High penetration of renewable energy source makes microgrid (MGs) be environment friendly. Howeve... more High penetration of renewable energy source makes microgrid (MGs) be environment friendly. However, the stochastic input from renewable energy resource brings difficulty in balancing the energy supply and demand. Purchasing extra energy from macrogrid to deal with energy shortage will increase MG energy cost. To mitigate intermittent nature of renewable energy, energy trading and energy storage which can exploit diversity of renewable energy generation across space and time are efficient and cost-effective methods. But a storage with large capacity will incur additional cost. In addition, due to MG participating energy trading as prosumer, it calls for an efficient trading mechanism. Therefore, this paper focuses on the problem of MG energy management and trading. Energy trading problem is formulated as a stochastic optimization one with both individual profit and social welfare maximization. Firstly a Lyapunov optimization based algorithm is developed to solve the stochastic problem. Secondly the double-auction based mechanism is provided to attract MGs' truthful bidding for buying and selling energy. Through theoretical analysis, we demonstrate that individual MG can achieve a time average energy cost close to offline optimum with tradeoff between storage capacity and energy trading cost. Meanwhile the social welfare is also asymptotically maximized under double auction. Simulation results based on real world data show the effectiveness of our algorithm.

The electromagnetic transient simulation is often used to model DC system to obtain more accurate dynamic characteristics. However, the operation status adjustment and initialization process of the EMT model of DC systems seriously affect the efficiency in simulation of AC/DC power grids. In this paper, a method of auto-initializing the electromagnetic model of DC transmission is proposed. Using the AC/DC large-scale network power flow as the boundary condition, the internal power flow solution of the DC electromagnetic model is quickly calculated, and the initial on-valves, the position of converter transformer’s tap, the AC filters’ switching scheme, and the control instructions are accurately determined. This solution enables the automatic initialization of the UHVDC electromagnetic model so that it can reach a predetermined steady state during the 0.5 s simulation. The method proposed in this paper realizes the fast and smooth start-up of the electromechanical-electromagnetic transient hybrid simulation with a large number of electromagnetic UHVDC models, and solves the application problems of the electromechanical-electromagnetic transient hybrid simulation in operation mode calculation and online simulation of power grid.

While the peptidoglycan (PG) cell wall serves as an exoskeleton that defines the static cell shape, the internal bacterial cytoskeleton mediates cell shape by recruiting PG synthesis machinery and thus defining the pattern of cell-wall synthesis. While much is known about the chemistry and biology of the cytoskeleton and cell wall, much of their biophysics, including essential aspects of the functionality, dynamics, and organization, remain unknown. This dissertation aims to elucidate the detailed biophysical mechanisms of cytoskeleton guided wall synthesis. First, I find that the bacterial cytoskeleton MreB contributes nearly as much to the rigidity of an Escherichia coli cell as the cell wall. This conclusion implies that the cytoskeletal polymer MreB applies meaningful force to the cell wall, an idea favored by theoretical modeling of wall growth, and suggests an evolutionary origin of cytoskeleton-governed cell rigidity. Second, I observe that MreB rotates around the long axis of E. coli, and the motion depends on wall synthesis. This is the first discovery of a cell-wall assembly driven molecular motor in bacteria. Third, I prove that both cell-wall synthesis and the PG network have chiral ordering, which is established by the spatial pattern of MreB. This work links the molecular structure of the cytoskeleton and of the cell wall with organismal-scale behavior. Finally, I develop a mathematical model of cytoskeleton-cell membrane interactions, which explains the preferential orientation of different cytoskeleton components in bacteria.

It interacts with both classic and desmosomal cadherins. Pg interaction with the desmosomal cadherins is essential for desmosome assembly. Its precise role in the classic cadherin complexes is unclear, although Pg-E-cadherin interaction appears to be necessary for the formation of desmosomes. In addition to cadherins in adhesion complexes, Pg interacts with a number of proteins involved in regulation of cell differentiation and proliferation such as Lef-1/Tcf-1 transcription factors and the tumor suppressor protein APC. In this study, we have introduced Pg cDNA into SCC9 cells, a Pg- and E-cadherin-deficient squamous cell carcinoma line, which also lacks desmosomes. These cells have both alpha-catenin and beta-catenin, display unusual expression of N-cadherin, and have the typical fibroblastic phenotype of transformed cells. Pg-expressing SCC9 cells (SCC9P) formed desmosomes. Desmosome formation coincided with the appearance of an epidermoid phenotype, with increased adhesiveness and a contact-dependent decrease in growth. Biochemical characterization of SCC9P cells showed an increase in the expression and stability of N-cadherin and a decrease in level and stability of beta-catenin, without any apparent effects on alpha-catenin. These results show that, in the absence of E-cadherin, Pg can efficiently use N-cadherin to induce desmosome formation and epidermoid phenotype. They also suggest a role for Pg as one of the regulators of the intracellular beta-catenin levels and underscore the pivotal role of this protein in regulating cell adhesion and differentiation.

Polymerization of actin results in the sequential formation of filopodia, lamellipodia, and stress fibers, but the molecular mechanisms regulating this polymerization are unknown. The Arp2/3 complex nucleates actin polymerization in vitro and could perform this function inside cells as well. To test whether Arp2/3 regulated platelet actin polymerization, we used recombinant Arp2 protein (rArp2) to generate Arp2-specific antibodies (αArp2). Intact and Fab fragments of αArp2 inhibited TRAP-stimulated actin-polymerizing activity in platelet extracts as measured by the pyrene assay. Inhibition was reversed by the addition of rArp2 protein. To test the effect of Arp2/3 inhibition on the formation of specific actin structures, we designed a new method to permeabilize resting platelets while preserving their ability to adhere and to for...

Research paper thumbnail of Electronic origin of high-temperature superconductivity in single-layer FeSe superconductor

Nature Communications, 2012

The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in iron-based compounds has attracted ... more The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in iron-based compounds has attracted much attention. How to further increase the superconducting transition temperature (T c) and how to understand the superconductivity mechanism are two prominent issues facing the current study of iron-based superconductors. The latest report of high-T c superconductivity in a single-layer FeSe is therefore both surprising and signifi cant. Here we present investigations of the electronic structure and superconducting gap of the single-layer FeSe superconductor. Its Fermi surface is distinct from other iron-based superconductors, consisting only of electron-like pockets near the zone corner without indication of any Fermi surface around the zone centre. Nearly isotropic superconducting gap is observed in this strictly two-dimensional system. The temperature dependence of the superconducting gap gives a transition temperature T c ~ 55 K. These results have established a clear case that such a simple electronic structure is compatible with high-T c superconductivity in iron-based superconductors.
