It was shown that the structural characteristics which enable a high degree of mirror reflection from this surface, which is very close to the ideal reflectivity of silver, are: flat and mutually parallel parts of the surface which are smooth on the atomic level, and distances between adjacent flat parts which state several atomic diameters.

This research has demonstrated that this novel nanocomposite has had better implications on the liver tissue in vivo (Wistar rats treated intraperitoneally), than treatment based only on DOX. FNP/DOX has been characterised by DLS, TEM and AFM measurements which have shown that DOX loaded onto FNP did not influence fullerenol nanoparticle's size. FNP/DOX affected oxidative status in blood causing a significant decrease of catalase and SOD activity in comparison to DOX, implicating the reduction in oxidative stress. qRT-PCR results on the mRNA level of antioxidative enzymes (catalase and MnSOD) revealed that the effect of oxidative stress is significantly reduced by the treatment with FNP/DOX (p < .05). The ultrastructural analysis of the liver tissue has revealed that FNP/DOX nanocomposite generated considerably less damage in the liver tissue, than DOX applied at...

Besides the Ar+ ions, other ion species (He+, N+ and Ne+) are also used as projectiles. The targets in the experiments were polycrystalline silver and copper as well as the monocrystalline nickel (110). According to

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied on polycrystalline Pt and Au electrodes in 0.1 M HClO... more Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied on polycrystalline Pt and Au electrodes in 0.1 M HClO 4 solutions containing various amounts of acetonitrile (AcN). The state of the electrode surface was characterized by cyclic voltammetry in oxygen free electrolytes, while ORR studies were performed on polycrystalline Pt and Au rotating disc electrodes by a linear sweep voltammetry in oxygen saturated electrolytes. Acetonitrile is chemisorbed on Pt over a wide potential range inhibiting both H adsorption and oxide formation. The extent of AcN chemisorption depends on its concentration in the solution. Initial potential of oxygen reduction is shifted negatively, while the kinetics of ORR is increasingly hindered with the increase of AcN concentration. Inhibiting effect of acetonitrile on ORR is pronounced on both Pt(poly) and Au(poly). Complete inhibition of ORR in the potential range of AcN chemisorptions is achieved for 0.1 M HClO 4 solution containing 1 M AcN on Au(poly) and 3 M AcN on Pt(poly).

Glass substrate was positioned 75 degrees with respect to the substrate normal. The obtained nickel thin film was characterized by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. Surface energy of the deposited thin film was determined by measuring the contact angle using the static sessile drop method.

Atomic force microscopy has shown that counter anions in Pd salts are responsible for the differences in surface topography. In both cases the oxidation of ethanol is characterized by the rise of a new peak at approximately the same potential for the same coverage, indicating similar electronic modification of Pd islands by the Au(111) substrate. Pd/Au(111) nanostructures obtained using PdCl2 salt have shown higher ethanol oxidation current densities, which can be ascribed to the surface structure consisting of thinner and smoother Pd deposit providing more convenient sites for the adsorption of ethanol and its subsequent oxidation.

Optical and structural properties of materials can be characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry... more Optical and structural properties of materials can be characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry which represents an experimental technique that measures polarized light reflected from a material surface. Since the most complicated part of this method is data analysis and modeling, we present the calculation of the ellipsometric parameters for bi-isotropic materials. We consider the ellipsometric model for these materials which require not just permittivity like in conventional model, but also magnetic permeability and magnetoelectric coupling.

Glass sample was positioned 15 degrees with respect to the nickel vapour flux. The nickel thin film was characterized by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Magneto-Optical Kerr effect Microscopy and Spectroscopic Ellipsometry. According to an AFM cross-section imaging, it was found that the nickel thin film has a columnar structure. The values of the coercivity, obtained from the magnetic hysteresis loops, were analyzed as a function of the sample rotation in the magnetic field. It was found that the direction of magnetization easy axis lies toward the structure growth. Optical properties of the nickel thin film were studied at the wavelength of 455 nm. From the shape of the refractive index and the extinction coefficient diagrams could be concluded that the nickel thin film has an optical anisotropy.

We evaluated genotoxic and antigenotoxic effects of FNP on human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) using two cytogenetic assays. The effects of FNP were evaluated on the frequency of chromosomal aberrations (CA) and micronuclei (MN) on undamaged and mitomycin C (MMC)-damaged PBL. FNP number distribution in a culture medium with serum showed that predominant particles were about 180 nm and 90 nm respectively. Cytogenetic assays showed that FNP decreased chromosomal aberrations and micronucleus frequency on the undamaged and the MMC-damaged human PBL at concentration range from 5.54 μM to 221.60 μM. Our research confirmed that FNP did not exhibit genotoxic but induced antigenotoxic effects at subcytotoxic concentrations on human lymphocytes.

Laser irradiation was performed by a Nd3+:YAG (λ = 1.06 μm) laser in the free generation and the Q-switch regime, using both focused and unfocused beams. Irradiation induced changes were investigated using Light and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), infrared (IR), Ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) and Raman spectroscopy by inspecting several uncured and cured BCB films before and after irradiation. It has been found that both types of irradiation under investigated conditions have produced a novel phase in the material, which is not present either in the uncured or the cured BCB films. Possible implications of the observed effects on curing and degradation of BCB films have been discussed.
