About 13 (7 men, 6 women) undergraduates participated in the experiment using event-related potentials. Results showed that the response to self-relevant information was faster compared to other-relevant information and no significant differences for self-relevant relative to mother-relevant information were observed. Both physical and interior beauty words for self-relevant information showed an enhanced late positive component as compared to other-relevant information. Physical beauty for self-relevant information yielded a larger late positive component in contrast to mother-relevant information but not for interior beauty. This study indicates that beauty is specific to the person who judges it though an individual and one's mother may hold similar views of interior beauty.

However, the neural basis of behavioral sex difference during local image generation is not clear. Generally, reaction time is considered as an index of speed of brain information processing. And the small-world topology of functional brain connectivity could provide high global and local efficiency of parallel information processing. Therefore, it was speculated that stronger small-world effect underlay females’ faster reaction time during local image generation. Total 28 people (14 males and 14 females) participated in the experiment and they were informed to observe a set of experimental pictures and then generate corresponding mental image to the global or local cue. The reaction time and event-related potential were recorded. The behavioral and electrophysiological data obtained in the experiment were analyzed by ANOVA and small-world measures, respectively. Results showed that females had the shorter reaction time, the smaller P300-650 amplitude and the shorter average path length of brain network in local image generation. Additionally, there was a positive correlation between the reaction time and the average path length. The present findings suggested that the lower cost and higher efficiency of brain information processing supported the better behavioral performance.

They completed the Big Five Personality Inventory, the Social Creativity Questionnaire, and the Internet Interaction Questionnaire. Results of serial mediation analysis using a bias-corrected bootstrapping approach indicated that openness in real-world situations had a significant direct effect on social creativity. Virtual openness and Internet dependence, in combination, mediated the link between real-world openness and social creativity. Individuals' use of the Internet directly affected their personality and communication. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

A cross-sectional study. Data were collected from an online survey in Wuhan, China. 5988 university students from six universities were selected by a stratified cluster sampling method. Suicidal ideation and suicide attempt at some point of the students' lifetime were the outcomes of interest. Students with suicidal ideation or attempted suicide reported a lower level of life satisfaction and high degree of psychache than counterparts without suicidal ideation or attempt. Regression analyses indicated that life satisfaction and psychache were significantly associated with the risk of suicidal ideation and the risk of suicidal attempt. Though psychache showed a relatively stronger predictive power than life satisfaction, the effect of the two factors remained significant when they were individually adjusted for personal demographic characteristics....

In a way, the Internet has constituted an important background to the development of the individual. And it plays an important role in how people acquire information, make and connect with friends and family, and consume entertainment worldwide. In China, the number of Chinese netizens has reached 688 million, which accounts for 50.3% of the Chinese total population, and 54% of these are below the age of 29. Based on the existing studies conducted among Chinese adolescents and college students, this chapter explores Internet use and self-development in Chinese culture. We may cite studies of non-Chinese people when it is necessary, such as when introducing some concepts or explaining some results, but most of the studies we use will focus on samples from Chinese individuals. The current studies are mainly focusing on the impairment of the cognitive processing functions, the attentional bias, the preference of cognitive processing, the inhibitory control and sensation seeking of internet addicts, as well as the neural pathways of internet addiction. On this base, this paper points out the value of these results in the exploration into the mechanism of internet addiction and its practical application, and it puts forward some suggestions that future research should clarify the relationship between internet addiction and the impairment of higher cognitive functions, integrate the current research methods, expand research object and indexes, and highlight the application value of research results in the identification and intervention of internet addiction.

The results indicated that individuals showed the same cognitive advantage for nicknames and real names. At the behavioural level, a nickname was detected as quickly as the real name, and both were detected faster than a famous name; at the neural level, the P300 potential elicited by one’s nickname was similar to that elicited by one’s real name, and both the P300 amplitudes and latencies were larger and more prolonged than those elicited by other name stimuli. These results not only confirmed the cognitive advantage for one’s own nickname and indicated that this self-advantage can be extended to online information, but also indicated that the virtual self could be integrated into...

In current information era, Internet has become an indispensable component of our daily lives, but there have been limited attempts to measure its influence from a self-expansion perspective. This study aims to develop and validate a scale measuring Internet self-expansion. Firstly, a semi-structured interview was conducted to generate the initial items. Exploratory factor analysis was then conducted on the initial 23 items using a sample of 565 participants. The results identified three dimensions: the acquisition of new experiences and perspectives; a sense of personal growth and new identities; and raising competence and resources. The three-factor model with 16-item, was then subjected to confirmatory factor analysis using a second sample of 686 participants. The results showed a good model fit. Finally, criterion validity and reliability were examined using a third sample of 351 participants. The results revealed that the score of Internet self-expansion was significantly correlated with that of Inclusion of Other in Self scale and Internet Use Intensity measure, indicating a good criteria validity. The scale of Internet self-expansion also demonstrated good internal consistency and test–retest reliability. Taken together, the findings suggest that the proposed scale is a reliable and valid measure which can be used to assess Internet self-expansion.

Economically disadvantaged youths are at greater risk of depression. Ostracism may be an important predictor of depression for them. However, no consensus has been reached on the underlying mechanism between ostracism and depression. A total of 1207 economically disadvantaged youths were recruited from six universities in China. These youths were asked to complete questionnaires measuring depression, ostracism, psychological capital, and perceived social support. A moderated mediation model was examined by using IBM SPSS STATISTICS 27macro program PROCESS version 3.5, in which psychological capital was a mediating variable, and perceived social support was a moderating variable. Lack of causal inferences and self-report bias due to the cross-sectional and self-report survey need to be considered when interpreting results. The results revealed that ostracism was positively associated wit...

Based on the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution model (I-PACE) for addictive behaviors and social comparison theory, the present study examined the mediating roles of upward social comparison and state anxiety in the link between passive SNS usage and online compulsive buying among female undergraduate students. A sample of 799 Chinese female undergraduate students (mean age = 19.86 years, SD = 1.63) were recruited to complete questionnaires measuring passive SNS usage, upward social comparison on SNS, state anxiety, and online compulsive buying. After controlling for online shopping experience, the results showed that passive SNS usage was positively associated with online compulsive buying; upward social comparison and state anxiety partially mediated this link, which contained three mediating pathways - the separate mediating effect of upward social comparison and state anxiety, and the sequential mediating effect of upward social comparison and state anxiety. These findings can advance our understanding of how passive SNS usage is related to online compulsive buying among female undergraduate students. Limitations and implications of this study are discussed.

After searching and screening the literature, a total of 36 studies involving 15,660 participants were included in the analysis. Using the random-effects model, the results indicated that neuroticism and extraversion were positively associated with PMPU. Conversely, agreeableness and conscientiousness were negatively associated with PMPU, while openness showed no association with PMPU. The result also showed that culture could moderate the relationship between openness and PMPU. Specifically, the negative relationship between openness and PMPU was not significant in collectivist culture but was significant in individualistic culture. In conclusion, high neuroticism, high extraversion, low agreeableness, and low conscientiousness are associated with PMPU. Moreover, the relationship between neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreeableness and PMPU is relatively stable. Besides, cultural background moderates the relationship between openness and PMPU.

Prior research has documented that parenting styles are closely associated with children’s sleep quality. However, the psychological processes underlying this relationship are less investigated. Objective Based on parental acceptance-rejection theory and the psychobiological inhibition model of insomnia, the current study aimed to examine the mediating roles of mindfulness and loneliness in the associations between parenting styles (i.e., parental warmth and parental rejection) and children’s sleep quality. Methods A questionnaire survey regarding parenting styles, mindfulness, loneliness, and sleep quality was administered to 475 Chinese children (Mage = 10.68 years, SDage = 1.15). Results Parental warmth was negatively associated with poor sleep quality, and parental rejection was positively associated with poor sleep quality. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis indicated that (a) loneliness, but not mindfulness, mediated the association between parental warmth and children’s sleep quality, and (b) mindfulness and loneliness exerted both unique and sequential mediating effects on the association between parental rejection and children’s sleep quality. Conclusion These findings shed light on possible mechanisms that can account for the associations between parenting styles and children’s sleep quality, and have implications for intervention strategies aimed at improving children’s sleep quality.
