Exploiting these advances to empower hearing-impaired and deaf persons with knowledge is a challenge as much as it is a need. Here, we present a part of our work in a national project to develop an environment for automatic translation from Arabic to Saudi Sign Language using 3D animations. One of the main objectives of this project is to develop a bilingual parallel corpus for automatic translation purposes; avatar-based 3D animations are also supposed to be built. These linguistic resources will be used for supporting development of ICT applications for deaf community. Due to the complexity of this task, the corpus is being developed progressively. In this paper, we present a first part of the corpus by working on a specific topic from the Islamic sphere.

In the MBROLA project, database voices (i.e., the DSP part of a TTS system) for Arabic, Brazilian, Portuguese, Breton, British English, Dutch, French, German, Romanian, Spanish,… are available. Several complete TTS Systems for Indo-European languages were developed around this project but not yet for the Arabic language. The quality of a text to speech synthesis depends on the naturalness, on the intelligibility of the speech generated and the specific characteristics to the produced voice. These characteristics depend on the techniques and the methods of synthesis, but also on the care taken to linguistic and prosodic modeling. Several works underlines the fact that linguistic structures maintain the close links with the prosodic achievements. Concerning the Arab language, the models are based on the syllabic structure of the words, the stressing, the concept of markers intonates (interrogative mainly) and very little on syntactic information. The object of this paper is to describe modelling and the integration of phonological, morpho-lexical and syntactic knowledge necessary to the development of a complete Arabic Text To Speech System starting from diacritized Arab texts.

The final aim is the prosodic generation for an Arabic Text-To-Speech (TTS) synthesis system. Several authors have already identified on isolated word corpora the effects of speakers, word structure, sound nature and Arabic dialects. In our work hypothesis is to verify these effects for standard Arabic on continuous speech. Firstly a continuous speech corpora is defined and recorded. Then, two automatic tools —the SYNTHAR+ grapheme-phoneme system and the MBROLIGN alignment— are used to label the speech database recorded. Finally several contextually analysis of phonetic unit duration are conducted. Our studies on continuous speech confirm the results already obtained on isolated words –both the consonantal and final pause context effect and the consonantal gemination effect on the vowel duration. We will report also on the effect of the syllabic number on the speech rate. Introduction The curren...
