The aim of this paper is to identify and analyze the classical, whether Greek or Roman, ... more The aim of this paper is to identify and analyze the classical, whether Greek or Roman, mythical and biblical references found in the Tennessee Williams’s Suddenly last Summer, Orpheus Descending and A Streetcar Named Desire, focusing mainly on the symbolical use of archetypal mythical elements and structures. It is essential to point out that the myth serves only as the base which is daringly and audaciously spun into the body of the plays, but at the same time it gives enough space for the plot and characters to grow out of this archetypal base, thus creating a new vision of the classical, and adding a unique complexity beyond their mythical background or univocal observation.
