Turkey has become one of the countries where these international students continue their educatio... more Turkey has become one of the countries where these international students continue their education due to ongoing wars in the surrounding countries and the fact that Turkey is a transit route for refugees. The aim of the present study is to investigate the problems encountered by international student teachers while studying in Turkey and to explore their own solution suggestions to these problems. The study was carried out with five student teachers studying at Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Faculty of Education, and phenomenological research design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The data were collected using a questionnaire with open-ended questions and content analysis method was used for data analysis. The findings of the study showed that the participating student teachers held positive views on the courses and the faculty members, and they held negative views on the quality of education in their respective departments. The participants expressed that they had problems with language and communication, and they were subject to exclusion in their classrooms. Moreover, they emphasized that it was unnecessary for them to take some courses and the attendance at the courses should not be compulsory.

This paper investigated the effect of active learning techniques on academic performance and lear... more This paper investigated the effect of active learning techniques on academic performance and learning retention in the fourth-grade science course. This study adopted a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. Active learning techniques were applied in the experimental group, while the control group continued their routine education. The data were analyzed using a t-test. The results showed that the experimental group had higher academic performance and learning retention than the control group. Our results are consistent with the literature. Our experimental group participants had higher academic performance and learning retention than the control group participants. This suggests that active learning techniques enabled students to play a more active role in teaching/learning. Researchers should conduct longitudinal and mixed-design studies to understand the impact of active learning techniques more depth.

Being a collaborative professional development model and contributing to the collaboration and co... more Being a collaborative professional development model and contributing to the collaboration and communication skills of the group members, lesson study was coined in Japan and has been applied in many countries since then, which supports and enhances the professional development of teachers or pre-service teachers. Although literature abounds in studies on lesson study or on 21st-century skills, there is no study examining the impact of lesson study on 4Cs. Therefore, adopting an intrinsic case study approach, this paper examined to what extent a lesson study implementation influenced pre-service teachers' 21st-century skills in the Turkish context where lesson study is not an embedded tradition. Participants were six senior students of English language teaching. The data generated were wide-ranging: recordings of meetings, teachers' in-class observation notes, 4Cs checklist, recorded pre-and post-interviews, lesson study observation forms, and post-lesson evaluation forms. Findings showed that 21st-century skills of preservice teachers were developed, and pre-service teachers started to REASON the issues they face in the classroom, PRODUCE alternative way(s) to overcome troubles or support learning, and SHARE their experiences and solutions with colleagues sincerely in a collaborative atmosphere. However, one intriguing finding is that, in a context which does not embed lesson study, if the process is not internalized, it may cause the future teachers to be loath to reason, produce and share due to the lack of self-efficacy as well as the fear of being criticized.

This study aimed to develop the "Lesson Study Model Perception Scale" (LSMPS) and to determine th... more This study aimed to develop the "Lesson Study Model Perception Scale" (LSMPS) and to determine the psychometric properties of the scale. The study was designed as a survey model. A survey model is a research approach that aims to describe a situation as it is. When all the findings obtained to determine the psychometric properties of the scale developed within the scope of the research are evaluated together, it is investigated that the measurements obtained from the scale and the inferences to be made based on these findings are reliable and valid. Existing literature revealed that there are limited number of studies that determine how the LS model is perceived by teachers. It is seen that none of these studies attempted to develop a scale to measure teachers' perceptions of the LS model. The lack of a study in this context in the literature shows the originality of the study.

Bu amaç kapsamında Yükseköğretim Kurulu Ulusal Tez Merkezi veri tabanındaki tezler, nitel araştırma yaklaşımıyla ve doküman incelemesi tekniğiyle incelenmiştir. Amaçsal örnekleme stratejilerinden biri olan ölçüt örnekleme tekniğiyle ulaşılan 46 lisansüstü tez çalışması ele alınmıştır. Bu tez çalışmaları; yayın yılı, tez türü, üniversite, bölüm, sınıf düzeyi, ders, yöntem, veri toplama araçları ve veri analiz yöntemleri değişkenlerine göre içerik analizi yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Yapılan analizlerden elde edilen bulgular, betimsel istatistiklerin yer aldığı grafiklerle okuyuculara sunulmuştur. This paper investigated the integration of a Lesson Study Model (LSM) into distance STEM educatio... more This paper investigated the integration of a Lesson Study Model (LSM) into distance STEM education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study focused on six dimensions: (1) STEM education in distance learning, (2) Lesson Study (LS), (3) lesson planning processes, (4) challenges of lesson planning, (5) evaluation and assessment methods, and (6) strategies, methods, and techniques. The sample consisted of 24 science teachers recruited using criterion sampling, which is a purposive sampling method. A case study, which is a qualitative research method, was the design of choice. Data were collected through interviews, videotapes, and expert observations. The data were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Themes, categories, and codes were developed in accordance with the research purpose. Participants had positive opinions about the LSM, STEM education, and distance learning. Participants stated that the LSM activities within distance learning contributed to pedagogy and content knowledge in the STEM education process. The challenges faced by participants were unfavorable environmental conditions, time management issues, and a lack of knowledge and experience in lesson planning. Expert observations and videotapes corroborate these results, indicating that the LSM integrated with STEM education results in higher quality STEM lesson planning and teaching. Moreover, distance learning platforms are promising ways to ensure the professional development of teachers during the pandemic.

One of the most important skills for students to use, starting from the preschool period and thro... more One of the most important skills for students to use, starting from the preschool period and throughout their lives, is art education. The quality of visual arts teachers, who aim to develop students' knowledge and skills in terms of art, is highly important in this process. It is believed that the knowledge and experience that prospective visual arts teachers before service will enable them to be more effective and successful teachers while serving. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the professional development of prospective visual arts teachers within the framework of a lesson study. In this study, which was conducted as a case study with a qualitative research model, the participants consisted of 6 prospective visual arts teachers, which included 4 males and 2 females. Within the scope of the study, the data were obtained by using interview forms. Out of these data, codes and themes were obtained by using the content analysis method. As a result of this study, which covered a total period of 8 weeks, it was concluded that the professional development of prospective visual arts teachers was positively developed. It was observed that the lesson study model contributed to the knowledge and skills of prospective visual arts teachers in terms of lesson planning, methodtechnique, assessment-evaluation and cooperation. According to these results, suggestions, such as professional knowledge lessons that are practical, can be conducted within the framework of a lesson study, were presented.

Uluslararası düzeyde hizmet öncesinde öğretmen adaylarının ve hizmet içinde ise öğretmenlerin dah... more Uluslararası düzeyde hizmet öncesinde öğretmen adaylarının ve hizmet içinde ise öğretmenlerin daha nitelikli hale getirilmesi çabaları artarak devam etmektedir. Bu kapsamda öğretmen adaylarının mesleki anlamda daha deneyimli ve donanımlı olabilmeleri için uluslararası anlamda bir model olan ders araştırması modeli kullanılmaktadır. Ders araştırması modeli; bir grup öğretmen adayının bir araya getirilerek bir dersin planlandığı, planlanan dersin uygulandığı, uygulama esnasında gözlem yapıldığı, ders sonrası gözlemler doğrultusunda dersin değerlendirildiği, ders planının revize edildiği ve son olarak da yeni plan doğrultusunda dersin yeniden uygulandığı döngüsel bir süreci içermektedir. Modelin uygulanma sürecinin; mesleki açıdan önemli deneyimler sunduğu ve bu deneyimlerin paylaşılabileceği bir ortam yarattığı bilinmektedir. Bu çalışmanın Türk Eğitim Sistemi'nde yeni tanınmaya başlanan modelin daha iyi anlaşılabilmesine kuramsal anlamda katkı sunacağı düşünülmektedir.

Bu araştırmanın amacı, ortaokul öğretmenlerinin yapılandırmacı yaklaşım ile ilgili yeterlik düzey... more Bu araştırmanın amacı, ortaokul öğretmenlerinin yapılandırmacı yaklaşım ile ilgili yeterlik düzeylerini ve bunu etkileyen faktörleri belirlemektir. Araştırma, 2012-2013 öğretim yılında Muş İli Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü'ne bağlı ortaokullarda görev yapan öğretmenlerle yürütülmüştür. Araştırmaya Muş ili ve ilçe merkezlerinde bulunan toplam 407 ortaokul öğretmeni katılmıştır. Araştırmaya katılan öğretmenlere "Yapılandırmacı Öğrenme İle İlgili Öğretmen Yeterliği Ölçeği" ve araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan Kişisel Bilgi Formu uygulanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde SPSS paket programı ile nicel veri analiz teknikleri (Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H) kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Analizler sonucunda, ortaokul öğretmenlerinin yapılandırmacı yaklaşım uygulamaları konusunda kendilerini yeterli düzeyde gördükleri belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca iyi imkânlara sahip okullarda görev yapmakta olan ortaokul öğretmenlerinin yapılandırmacı yaklaşım uygulamaları bakımından kendilerini daha yeterli gördükleri görülmüştür. Bu doğrultuda okullarımızdaki öğrenme ortamlarının daha zengin imkânlarla donatılmasının yararlı olabileceği düşünülmektedir.

Bu araştırmanın amacı, ortaokul öğretmenlerinin yapılandırmacı yaklaşım ile ilgili yeterlik düzey... more Bu araştırmanın amacı, ortaokul öğretmenlerinin yapılandırmacı yaklaşım ile ilgili yeterlik düzeylerini ve bunu etkileyen faktörleri belirlemektir. Araştırma, 2012-2013 öğretim yılında Muş İli Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü'ne bağlı ortaokullarda görev yapan öğretmenlerle yürütülmüştür. Araştırmaya Muş ili ve ilçe merkezlerinde bulunan toplam 407 ortaokul öğretmeni katılmıştır. Araştırmaya katılan öğretmenlere "Yapılandırmacı Öğrenme İle İlgili Öğretmen Yeterliği Ölçeği" ve araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan Kişisel Bilgi Formu uygulanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde SPSS paket programı ile nicel veri analiz teknikleri (Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H) kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Analizler sonucunda, ortaokul öğretmenlerinin yapılandırmacı yaklaşım uygulamaları konusunda kendilerini yeterli düzeyde gördükleri belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca iyi imkânlara sahip okullarda görev yapmakta olan ortaokul öğretmenlerinin yapılandırmacı yaklaşım uygulamaları bakımından kendilerini daha yeterli gördükleri görülmüştür. Bu doğrultuda okullarımızdaki öğrenme ortamlarının daha zengin imkânlarla donatılmasının yararlı olabileceği düşünülmektedir.
