It aims to shed light on the manifestation of intercultural concepts in the sub-curriculum for the English secondary school subject for the Master's programme in teacher education and to argue that the global function of English as a lingua franca (ELF) requires intercultural education of EFL teaching degree students to be different from that for any other foreign language subjects. The theoretical background is provided of the concepts of intercultural communication and communicative effectiveness in intercultural encounters through ELF, as well as their link to the English language teaching domain. An overview of the current state of intercultural education of foreign language teachers in Austria is also given. The method used is a qualitative comparative analysis ...
