New flavonol glycoside, 4`-p-hydroxybenzoylisorhamnetin-3-O--L-rhamnopyranoside named cerato-side... more New flavonol glycoside, 4`-p-hydroxybenzoylisorhamnetin-3-O--L-rhamnopyranoside named cerato-side (5), together with the known kaempferol-3-O--L-rhamnopyranoside (afzelin) (3), quercetin-3-O-α-L-arabinofuranoside (auriculain) (4) quercetin-3-O--L-rhamnopyranoside (6), -sitosterol (1) and -sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucoside (2) were isolated for the first time from Ceratonia siliqua L. seeds. The identity of these compounds was established through UV, IR, MS and NMR spectral data. The antioxidant activity of the organic solvent fractions together with some isolated compounds were carried out and showed significant results.

The isolated compounds were identified using different spectroscopic techniques (1D and 2D-NMR, MS, UV and IR). Compounds were tested against human mammary cancer cell line (MCF-7) using in vitro Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) assay. Several compounds exhibit similar and/or better inhibitory activity than cisplatin. This is the first report for isolation of cycloartane glycoside and anthraquinones from the aerial part of watermelon.

This study explored the anti-obesity and antihyperlipidemic effects of Musa cavendishii Lamb. leaves. Doses of 1200 mg/kg of M. cavendishii methanol extract, or 300 mg/kg of fractions, were given to C57BL/6J mice fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) for 7 weeks. The reduction in fat volume was determined using CT scan and histopathological examination of mice livers. The results showed that the n-hexane and the EtOAc fractions reduced the body fat volume to 2.0% and 2.2% respectively, compared to 20.1% in the HFD group. Also, treated groups showed almost normal liver architecture with no fat vacuoles compared to the HFD group. Moreover, the treated groups showed a reduction in the levels of some obesity-related biochemical parameters, including plasma glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides levels. Chromatographic fractionation of the bioactive n-hexane extract afforded four known compounds viz., palmitic acid (1), 5-methyl-5-(4,8,12...

Aqueous (hydrophilic) and chloroform (Lipophilic) extracts of nine medicinal plants currently use... more Aqueous (hydrophilic) and chloroform (Lipophilic) extracts of nine medicinal plants currently used in Egyptian traditional medicine to treat some gastrointestinal tract (GIT) disorders were tested for their gastro-protective effect against the incidence of peptic ulcer. Indomethacin-induced ulcer in a rat model was used for this testing. Mentha microphylla, Brassica oleracea Capitata (Cabbage), B. oleracea Botrytis (cauliflower) aqueous fraction, Portolaca oleracea polysaccharide fraction, Oreganum marjoranum, Matricaria recutita, Solanum nigrum hydrophilic and lipophilic fractions, in addition to the chloroform fraction of Portolaca oleracea and Cicorium intybus afforded high protection against the incidence of gastric ulcer (~95%). O. syriacum hydrophilic and lipophilic fractions and gum arabic afforded moderate prophylactic effect. L. sicerarea, C. intybus hydrophilic fractions and M. microphylla lipophilic fraction were inactive. Herbs represent excellent resources for cost-effe...

Ait. of Egyptian origin afforded the new pregnane glycoside lineolon-3-O-[β-D-oleandropyranosyl-(1-4)-β-D-cymaropyranosyl-(1-4)-β-D-cymaropyranoside], along with six known compounds. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic evidences derived from 1D, 2D NMR experiments, mass spectrometry and by comparing their physical and spectroscopic data to literature. These included the triterpenoids 3β-taraxerol, 3β-taraxerol acetate and betulinic acid, which are identified for the first time in G. fruticosus and the cardenolides uzarigenin, gomphoside and calotropin.
