However disparities persist with sub-Saharan Africa in the lead. Nigeria has the unenviable position of being the under-five mortality capital of the world. Borno State ranks 23 rd in Nigeria with U5MR of 86/1000 live births. In addition to the vagaries of climate and socioeconomic underdevelopment, Borno State is also the centre of the Boko Haram insurgency since 2009. This study set out to determine the major diseases that caused deaths among the under-five children in the state between 2009 and 2013 using secondary data from the Epidemiological Unit of the Borno State Ministry of Health. Six Local Government Areas (two from each of the three Senatorial Districts in the state) were purposively selected. The major causes of under-five deaths found were malaria, diarrhoea/vomiting, measles, pneumonia and neonatal tetanus. The highest cause of under-five mortality was malaria in both Borno North and Borno South but malaria was second after diarrhoea/vomiting for Borno Central. The number of under-five deaths for the three senatorial districts have indicated fluctuating and general decline toward 2013 from 2009. It also shows that diarrhoea/vomiting was the highest killer of under-five children constituting 32 per cent of all deaths in this study, followed by malaria (30.3%) and measles (16.5%). Based on the findings, the study recommends the need for Nigeria to be more committed to health interventions and improve funding because all the major killers are preventable and are easily treatable.

This study examined the seasonal disparity in the cost of livestock rearing in Maiduguri metropolis, Borno State, Nigeria. Census of the study area revealed that there are two thousand, four hundred and seventy-nine livestock rearers. The instrument of the research was tested in a pilot survey. The respondents of the pilot survey were approached through accidental sampling. The outcome of the pilot survey helped in redesigning the research instrument. Three hundred and forty-six people engaged in livestock husbandry were chosen at random from all administrative districts in the metropolis using a stratified random sample approach. They were randomized using the Microsoft Excel software, and a sample from each ward was chosen. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistic tools. It is service industry task with the role of commuting passengers and their light freight across a geographical space. The full weight of the transportation medium was exerted on the study area with the ban of motor cycle operations. It forms part of many socioeconomic activities taking place in Maiduguri. Multi stage sampling techniques were used in collecting the primary data. Maiduguri was stratified into densely, moderately and sparsely populated areas. Table of random numbers guided selection process of sample from stratum after mapping the existing Tricycle stations. The primary data were obtained through interview schedule, observation as well as trip count. The respondents were also selected systematically at regular defined interval. Findings were analysed using descriptive statistical tools. It was revealed that the operation of Keke Napep come into effect in full pledge with the ban of Motorcycle as a means of transportation in Maiduguri. It absorbs large number of productive male gender into the trade as operators while the females only surfaced as owners of the vehicles. It is par with other economic activities in terms of employment and income generation. The operation of the new medium of transportation was hindered to larger extent by the insecurity bedevilling the state. In addition to the security threat, double and over taxation were also forces of retardation.

The objectives were to examine the factors and processes influencing gully development. The data used were obtained through measurements of the parameters such as gully length, width and depth at four locations. Also examine were slope angles, relief and vegetation of the topography and mapping of the gully patterns. The data were subjected to laboratory and statistical analysis. The findings revealed that factors that influence gullying (process) along the floodplain are rainfall amount, runoff taking advantage of footpaths, wheeled-tracks and soil texture. It was also revealed that human activities such as sand mining contribute to gullying processes by influencing mass wasting processes like slumping through undermining of channel banks leading to caving as well as collapse of channels. The construction of new houses along the road due to population pressure accelerated the gullying processes. The River Ngaddabul annual floods also contribute towards gullying (processes) by deepening the channels, leading to the initiation of new gullies on the slopes. In view of these, the study recommended that drainage channel should be constructed in the gully affected areas to check the volume of runoff influencing gullying. Sand quarrying should be restricted to specific locations along the road in order to prevent further disfiguring of the Ngaddabul channel through undermining processes along the channel.

This study was aimed to determine the influence of gender on academic performance of final year students in geography department, University of Maiduguri. A CGPA (Cumulative grade point average) of one hundred and eighty two (182) was collected, this include 156(85.7%) male and 26(14.7%) female. The findings of this study shows that there is significance influence between genders and academic performance of students in the department with highly statistical difference (t = 2.6662, df = 7, p = 0.0578, Confidence interval = 1.751879 20.44812 and sample estimated mean = 11.1). Therefore, parents, teachers, and counselors give higher level of expectations for female and encourage them, so that they will perform better in University level. The research was motivated by reconnaissance survey to such location which posited that BOSEPA has been unable to evacuate the waste generated on daily basis. This study assessed the key problems BOSEPA faces in managing waste in the neighbourhood. Seventy five residents who have lived in the neighbourhood for at least six years were purposively sampled and interviewed. Officials of BOSEPA were given a questionnaire the information from which was used to validate the data collected from the sampled residents. The data generated from the residents were processed by a Binary Logistic Regression method of estimation. The results revealed that five factors account for the challenge in managing solid waste in the area. The first challenge facing solid waste management is that th...

Maiduguri Metropolis has limited space for livestock rearing; however, it was observed that several families in the city do engage in livestock rearing, with all its associated challenges along major streets. It also plays significant role in the cultural set up among the inhabitants. The predictor level indicates that livestock significantly contributes to the income of the rearers. The regression analysis reveals that 40.8% of the livestock rearers' income is derived from the practice. The ANOVA result has also attested that livestock rearing is significantly contributing to the income of the rearers.
