Research paper thumbnail of A comparative study pertaining to deleterious effects of diclofenac sodium and meloxicam on kidney tissue in rats

Diclofenac sodium is one of the world's most widely-prescribed NSAIDs. Meloxicam is another NSAID that was approved in the last several years. Treatment with NSAIDs may result in renal damage. Relatively, little is known about comparative nephrotoxicity of NSAIDs. Therefore, the present study was designed to compare the adverse effects of diclofenac sodium and meloxicam on renal tissue in rats. Forty eight Wistar male rats were randomly assigned into 3 groups of 16 animals each. Group C served as normal control and received normal saline. Group D and M received diclofenac sodium (2.3 mg/kg/day) and meloxicam (2.3 mg/kg/day), respectively. After 17 days, all rats were scarified. Their kidneys were then harvested and processed for histological examination. In addition to cellular details, renal tubular count and diameter were assessed with the light micros...

One specific mutation, GLA A143T, has been proposed to cause a "cardiac variant" of Fabry disease which presents with isolated cardiac manifestations resembling hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). However, the pathogenicity of this mutation has been questioned and its contribution to the HCM phenotype has not been firmly established.

The results of the TEM tests showed that the size of Al 2 O 3 and WO 3 nanoparticles was ranged from 10 to 60 nm, and the results showed that nanoparticles were semi-spherical. Also the results of DLS and zeta potential tests, respectively, exhibited the uniform size and high stability of the nanoparticles in the basefluid environment. The findings showed that adding a certain amount of nanoparticles to water and liquid paraffin increases dynamic viscosity, and in the case of various shear rates, the viscosity is constant for the waterbased nanofluids, which indicates the Newtonian behavior of the nanofluid. In addition, for those prepared by liquid paraffin as a basefluid, the viscosity does not remain constant at different shear rates and at low amount of shear rate the viscosity achieves higher value, indicating non-Newtonian behavior of liquid paraffin-based nanofluids. The results showed that by increasing the temperature in liquid paraffin-based nanofluid the uniformity and linearity of the viscosity curve at various shear rates could be observed, which represents an approach for Newtonian behavior of nanofluid at higher temperatures. These results also showed that with increasing the mass fraction of nanoparticles in water and liquid paraffin, the viscosity increases at different shear rates. Finally, the correlation presented in this study shows that for nanofluid viscosity as a function of nanoparticles load and temperature, the deviation of correlated data from experimental values is less than 10%.

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Mitomycin-C augmented trabeculectomy on corneal endothelial cells

Methods: In this prospective comparative case series, 31 eyes with glaucoma underwent trabeculectomy with (group I), or without (group II) MMC. Specular microscopy was performed pre-, and postoperatively at months 1 and 3. Outcome measures included central corneal endothelial cell count and coefficient of variation (CV) of cell size. Results: Overall, mean preoperative ECD was 2,135.8 ± 397.6 cells/mm 2 ; corresponding values at postoperative months 1 and 3 were 2,019.6 ± 447.2 cells/mm 2 , and 1,991.4 ± 425.5 cells/mm 2 , respectively (P > 0.05). Cell loss from month 1 to 3 was 1.3 % (P > 0.05). Subgroup analysis showed significant differences in endothelial cell loss at month 1 (P = 0.048) and month 3 (P = 0.014) between the MMC and control groups with no significant difference between the two groups in terms of cell loss from months 1 to 3, postoperatively (P = 0.968). Overall, mean pre-and postoperative CVs at months 1 and 3 were 27.38 ± 4.55, 27.96 ± 4.26, and 28.35 ± 4.47, respectively, with no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). There was no correlation between preoperative central endothelial cell density (CECD) and MMC related cell loss. Conclusion: MMC application in trabeculectomy seems to cause a small but significant corneal endothelial loss. Most of the damage occurs intraoperatively, or in the early postoperative period, however progressive endothelial cell loss is not a major concern.

Research paper thumbnail of The value of touch imprint cytology and frozen section for intra-operative evaluation of axillary sentinel lymph nodes

The most important intraoperative evaluation methods are touch imprint cytology (TIC) and frozen section (FS). Each of these techniques has its own drawbacks and it is still unclear which is preferred. 97 consecutive patients with recently diagnosed breast cancer and no clinical evidence of lymph node involvement were included in the study. The SLN was determined with lymphoscintigraphy. Touch imprint cytology and FS were performed and their results were compared with permanent histopathological examination. Using a permanent section as the gold standard TIC showed sensitivity of 71.4%, specificity of 100%, positive predictive value of 100%, and negative predictive value of 88.7%. These figures were 87.5%, 98.5%, 96.5%, and 95% for FS, respectively. Frozen section is a reliable method for SN assessment during surgery. Using the frozen section during surgery can give the ...

Japanese journal of ophthalmology, 1989

Ocular manifestations in patients infected with human T-lymphotropic retrovirus type I (HTLV-I) c... more Ocular manifestations in patients infected with human T-lymphotropic retrovirus type I (HTLV-I) consisted of a wide range of neoplastic, infectious and noninfectious vascular or inflammatory lesions. These disorders were associated with two distinct HTLV-I-induced systemic diseases, ie, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and HTLV-I-associated myelopathy. Five of the 10 cases of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma had inflammatory or opportunistic infectious ocular lesions, including cytomegalovirus retinitis or eyelid tumor as part of generalized lymphomas. Four of the 17 cases of HTLV-I-associated myelopathy showed noninfectious lesions such as isolated, transient cotton-wool spots and granulomatous iridocylitis. Twenty-four (26.9%) of 89 cases with various ocular diseases but no HTLV-I-induced systemic disease had antibodies to HTLV-I in the serum. The aqueous humor antibodies to HTLV-I in the seropositive carriers were negative, except one carrier case who showed isolated cotton-wool spot...

Renewable energy organization of Iran’s 12-monthed data are used for wind energy calculations. Wind velocity at 40, 30 and 10 meter height is studied firstly. Mean wind velocity on this station at mentioned height is 7.03, 6.82, 5.96 m/s respectively. Also windrose of wind blow direction is investigated. From windrose can be seen that the dominant wind direction is between north and northeast for 30m height and is between north and northwest for 37.5m height. This difference probably is that the data reported by the Renewable energy organization of Iran has problems. Annual wind mean power at 10, 30 and 40 meters height show that maximum of wind power production is on July. Also with evaluation the annual wind average power can be seen that 40m and 30m heights for installing wind turbines are suitable.

Design: Comparative interventional case series. Methods: 15 patients (eighteen myopic eyes) with MTM underwent vitrectomy and release of vitreoretinal traction and ILM peeling with gas (SF6) tamponade. Eleven eyes (61.1%) received a combined phacovitrectomy. Mean patients age was 54 years ,mean refractive error was-15.05 dioptric spherical equivalent and mean preoperative best corrected visual acuity was 1.25 log MAR (range 1.6 to 0.5).
