Laccase enzymes have been used widely in industrial fields such as textile, pulp, paper, food, co... more Laccase enzymes have been used widely in industrial fields such as textile, pulp, paper, food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Laccase is used in toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorants, and soaps in personal care products. Previously, laccase enzymes had never been used for formulating hand sanitizer gel. This study aimed to determine the effect of the laccase enzyme on the physicochemical properties and the antibacterial potential of the hand sanitizer gel against pathogenic bacteria. Laccase enzyme was produced through fermentation using the fungus Trametes hirsuta EDN 082 with an activity of 0.032 U/mL. Hand sanitizer gel was made with the addition of laccase enzyme with varying concentrations of 4, 7, and 10% (v/v). Mulberry leaves extract at doses 250 (M250), 500 (M500), and 750 (M750) mg/kg of body weight known had effectiveness in decreasing uric acid levels in mice. This study aimed to know the physical stability and effectiveness of mulberry leaves extract syrup in reducing uric acid levels. Phytochemical screening was carried out to determine the class of compounds in the mulberry extract. The extract was then prepared into syrup formulation. It is a very real and serious aesthetic concern for everyone. Leaves and flowers of Hibiscus are traditionally known to potentiate hair growth promotion. In this study we determine the hair growth promotion activity of hibiscus leaves using 2.5%, 5% and 10% of hibiscus leaf extract in the form of hair tonic. We also assessed the physical stability and safety of the hair tonic. Hair growth promotion activity assay was carried out by applying hair tonic on the rabbit’s back and measured hair length, hair thickness, hair weight and hair density. Physical stability assessment was performed at low (4°C ± 2°C), room (25°C ± 2°C) and high (40°C ± 2°C) temperature as well as the cycling test. Safety test was done by eye irritation test with HET-CAM and skin irritation test with patch test method. Berdasarkan pengalaman empiris masyarakat, daun tegining ganang dapat mengobati sakit perut, muntaber, maag, nyeri ulu hati, nyeri pinggang, batu ginjal, dan lain-lain. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui LD50 sehingga didapatkan tingkat toksisitas sediaan uji, dan efek toksik yang dihasilkan dari daun tegining ganang. Penelitian dilakukan dengan cara serbuk tegining ganang dimaserasi menggunakan etanol 70%, kemudian diuapkan dengan rotary vacum evaporator. Kemudian dilakukan uji organoleptis, bebas pelarut etanol, dan penapisan fitokimia. Previous research showed that the plant has analgesic activity, but the results were still less satisfactory due to the low analgesic effectiveness (<50 %). This study aimed to examine the analgesic potential of tegining ganang leaf extract through chemical induction and hot plate induction methods. In vivo testing was conducted on male mice using those two methods to evaluate plant effectiveness as both a central and peripheral analgesic. Tegining ganang leaves collected from the village of Peresak, West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province, were extracted in ethanol 70%. The treatments were extract dosages, viz. 200, 400, 800 mg.kg-1 body weight (BW) of mice. ABSTRACT Two hundred cultures of lactic acid bacteria were isolated from eight yan-taozih (pickle... more ABSTRACT Two hundred cultures of lactic acid bacteria were isolated from eight yan-taozih (pickled peaches) samples, and four cultures were isolated from the main component of these samples, fresh peaches. Phenotypic and biochemical characteristics identified eight different bacterial groups (A–H) and showed that the majority of the isolates was heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria. The most common bacterial species in yan-taozih was Leuconostoc mesenteroides, although regional diversity was also observed among the lactic acid bacteria strains isolated. The antibacterial activities of the isolates were also determined, and 20 isolates were found to show inhibitory activity against the indicator strain Lactobacillus sakei JCM 1157T. The results of the sensory evaluation suggested that the diversity of lactic acid bacteria has a great effect on the aroma and formation of taste in the food product. Our findings suggest that Leuconostoc mesenteroides is the most abundant lactic acid bacteria in yan-taozih (pickled peaches) and that lactic acid bacteria strains play an important role in affecting the aroma and taste of the food product.

Aim: To evaluate the antifertility activity of the chloroform extract of Carica papaya seeds by o... more Aim: To evaluate the antifertility activity of the chloroform extract of Carica papaya seeds by oral administration in langur monkey, Presbytis entellus entellus. Methods: The chloroform extract of Carica papaya seeds, 50 mg/kg/day, was administered orally for 360 days to adult male langur monkeys. The sperm characteristics by light and electron microscopy, the sperm functional tests, the semen biochemistry, the serum testosterone level, the Leydig cell function, and the histology and ultrastructure of testis were determined to evaluate the antifertility activity and the blood biochemistry and hematology, to evaluate the toxicology. Results: The extract gradually decreased the sperm concentration since days 30-60 of treatment with a total inhibition of sperm motility, a decrease in sperm viability and increase in sperm abnormality. Azoospermia was observed after day 90 of treatment and continued during the whole treatment period. Treatment withdrawal resulted in a gradual recovery in these parameters and 150 days later they reverted to nearly the pretreatment values. Morphological observation of the ejaculated sperm by light and scanning electron microscopy showed deleterious changes, particularly on the mid-piece. Sperm functional tests, viz., sperm mitochondrial activity index, acrosome intactness test and hypo-osmotic swelling test scored in the infertile range during treatment and returned to the fertile values 150 days after drug withdrawal. Histology of the testis revealed shrunken tubules, germ cell atrophy and normal Leydig cells. Ultrastructure of the testis showed vacuolization in the cytoplasm of Sertoli cells and germ cells. Loss of cytoplasmic organelles were evident in the spermatocytes and spermatids. Round spermatids showed loss of Golgi bodies, peripheral mitochondria and vacuolated cytoplasm, indicating maturational arrest. Leydig cell functional test indicated a mild inhibition of steroidogenic function. Haematology and serum biochemistry study disclosed no significant toxicological effect and the serum testosterone level was not affected.
