D u r i n g the Cold War, United States discarded Woodrow Wilson's moral liberalism and replaced ... more D u r i n g the Cold War, United States discarded Woodrow Wilson's moral liberalism and replaced it with institutional liberalism. Since institutional liberalism, which protected the US capitalist system, had ostensibly been threatened by communism, US foreign policy was guided by the principle of checking the influence of communism in all parts of the World. In such an environment, defence of pro-West democracies and authoritarian regimes became part of the agenda of the leaders and proponents of US liberalism. Meanwhile, the American Realists, without paying attention to domestic characteristics of the political systems in the Middle East, committed themselves to protecting their allies and ensure regional political stability. This US policy remained effective in a bi-polar international system for halfa-century; and during this long stretch, the power of authoritarian regimes continued only to increase.
