Research paper thumbnail of Evaluation of HNS Integration Among SHGs in Bihar, India

In Bihar, the third most populous state of India, the implementing partner, Project Concern International (PCI), a development organization has been implementing several health, nutrition and sanitation (HNS) interventions onto the networks of existing or newly created women's SHGs since 2011. Findings from the pilot studies showed that women's SHGs could be a promising social platform to layer health-related interventions through the behavior change communication (BCC) approach. Therefore, the Government of Bihar and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) deliberated for health integration within JEEViKA-Bihar Rural Livelihood Program (BRLP) using women's SHGs in selected blocks across the state. JEEViKA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PCI to provide technic...

It further explores different strategies and programs for disaster insurance adopted by the Indian government and highlights these initiatives' gaps. Methods: The authors conducted both offline and online desk reviews to understand the dynamics of insurance mechanisms and government strategies. They conducted a narrative review of existing literature, including peerreviewed articles, thematic books, and government and non-governmental reports from diverse sources. Results: The review clearly shows that despite the various types of natural disasters the country faces, the coverage of disaster insurance in India remains low. It outlines the importance of insurance as a risk management tool, especially for the most vulnerable sections of society living in rural parts. The review further highlights the benefits of different government schemes...

However, the impacts of extreme weather events have been uneven and devastating in developing countries largely because of lack of resources, weak adaptive capacity and large dependency on climate sensitive livelihoods. Odisha on the eastern coast of India is one of the most disaster-prone states in India with a regular prevalence of extreme events like cyclones, droughts, floods and Heat waves. The state's livelihood is mainly based on weather patterns directly (farming, fisheries) or indirectly (non-farm wage labour, dairy farming) are at stake due to the frequent occurrence of extreme weather events. However, there are very limited studies available which describe the situation, impacts and resilience of extreme weather events in the context of livelihood in the state. The present study is an attempt in this direction to review and examine the impact of extreme weather events (e.g., cyclone, flood, drought and Heat wave) on the livelihood of the population in Odisha. In addition, the study examines the resilience shown by the people and the program and policy adopted by the government on the extreme weather events in the state. The study findings highlight that extreme weather events have affected populations at large, caused substantial economic losses and exerted a disproportionate effect on the vulnerable social groups such as sharecroppers, small and marginal farmers, backward communities, landless labourers, wage labourers, rickshaw pullers and vendors as the nature of work in which they are engaged is susceptible to the effects of extreme weather events. The impact of these disasters is exacerbated when an area is prone to multiple types of disasters. This study attempts to understand the impact of natural and man-made disasters on the people of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh region in India as well as it also examines the resilience mechanisms adopted by the people, and identifies measures taken by the government in response to these disasters. To understand these disasters’ dynamics, we conducted both offline and online desk reviews for this study. The review suggests that J&K and Ladakh region is afflicted not only by multiple natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, avalanches, and landslides but also by the terrorism and violence, which has caused unparalleled death and destruction. These natural and man-made disasters have adversely affected most aspects of life and development in the region. To mitigate th...

Odisha is one of India’s most disaster-prone states. This study explores the effects of, and resilience to, cyclones, floods, droughts, and heatwaves in Odisha, and identifies government strategies that help mitigate these natural disasters. We mainly used primary data collected through a qualitative study undertaken from April 2017 to June 2017 in three districts of Odisha. We conducted in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with community members and key stakeholders at different levels. In addition, our study analyzed secondary data on natural disasters using DesInventar, a disaster information management system data source. The findings show that floods, cyclones, and drought in recent years, along with heatwaves and lightning, have severely affected the people of...

The project promotes better management practices to goat-rearers with the intention "to transform and improve the quality of life of landless and marginal farming households in Bihar, India". It is achieving this by introducing a cadre - Pashu Sakhis, women livestock health workers. The program is providing training and field-based handholding support to pashu sakhis, to contribute in the productivity of small ruminants i.e. goats, income enhancement of the goat rearer household, women empowerment, and other related outcomes. JEEViKA rolled out an intervention based on a similar design in 15 districts of Bihar. The evaluation is led by Population Council, India and aims to contribute to evidence around the association of pashu sakhis in goat rearing programs in order to increase household income, improve goat health and management and empower women.
