The situation is being worsened by high environmental, social vulnerability and extreme events influenced by climate catastrophes. With the demand of energy consistently on the rise, there is critical need to address policy, investment, market and technical barriers to energy sector development. Mozambican government has made tremendous effort in developing electricity sector regulatory frameworks. However, progress has been uneven across the country. Thus, the aim of the study was to identify potential opportunities to promote the introduction of new distributed generation policies and technologies from renewable sources in Mozambique by analyzing technological and regulatory components of the energy sector in Argentina, Italy and Mexico. Methodologically, the study uses a comprehensive l...

The auxiliary circuit consist of a network of two capasitors and an inductor. The aim of this network is to produce zero voltage switching (ZVS) over a wide input voltage range, while reducing the voltage stress on the resonant component. A detailed analysis and performance characteristics are presented. Experimental results for a 5V, 35W converter show an efficiency of 83 % at a constant operating frequency of 500 kHz. Using metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) as synchronous rectifiers can further reduce power losses and improve the efficiency to be greater than 90 %. The results also indicate that pest and beneficial arthropods are not reduced to the sanie dcgrec. Of the IS pest categories. 7 were little reduced by the ncctariless cultivar, whereas the remaining eight had reductions of 24 to 4% averaged for the 4-year study period. All 15 beneficial species categories showed a significant (P < 0.05) reduction on the nectariless cultivar (38 to 69% four year averaged reduction). these being affected to it greater degree than the pest. A disturbing question that remains is whcthcr the utility of nectarilehs cultivars for reducing pest pressures is afforded at comniercial levels of planting. .4s plot size increased froin 0. I I to 4.05 ha. the reduction on the ncctariless cultivar dccrcased from ca. 38 to 32%. Thc rate at which the differences between the nectaried and ncctariless cultivars decreases implies that the advantage with the nectariless cultivar might disappear with conimercial scale planting.\. Further large-scale trials would however be required for confirmation of this trend.

Many high income countries have attempted to address poverty by introducing mandatory requirements to actively seek employment or participate in training for welfare recipients, including lone parents. However, employment might not reduce poverty or improve the health of lone parents. To assess experiences of welfare to work and gain insight into possible mechanisms linking interventions with health and wellbeing, this study systematically reviewed qualitative data from studies of lone parents' experiences of mandatory welfare to work. Methods 21 bibliographic databases were searched (appendix) for articles published between July 16, 2009, and July 6, 2013, with no language restrictions; search-term sets were used for the topics, lone parent and welfare to work. Studies that met the criteria of focusing on lone parents, mandatory welfare to work interventions, and health or wellbeing were imported into NVivo (version 10) for coding. Two reviewers independently screened references, assessed study quality for clarity and appropriateness of methods, and developed the coding framework. Thematic synthesis, a method to facilitate transparency when identifying analytical themes between studies, was used to guide line-by-line coding of the data. Findings From 4703 papers identifi ed, 16 studies (724 participants) from fi ve high income countries were included. Although the balance of evidence was on negative fi ndings-ie, linking welfare to work to negative health eff ects, such as stress, fatigue, and depression-there were some positive reports of improved self-worth. Available employment was often precarious and poorly paid. The demands of parenting were frequently in direct confl ict with employment and welfare to work obligations, and aff ected parents' control over major life decisions and everyday routines. Therefore, the concepts of confl ict and control seemed to encapsulate how welfare to work aff ected health. Social support allowed some parents to manage these confl icts, allowing greater control over their circumstances, and for some mediating the adverse health eff ects of welfare to work. Interpretation Participation in mandatory welfare to work can result in increased confl ict and reduced control for lone parents, leading to negative eff ects on mental health. The potential benefi ts of welfare to work are dependent on access to adequate social support and suitable employment opportunities; however these are often unavailable to lone parents in welfare to work.
Participation of C3b, the major cleavage product of C3, in both the classical and alternative pat... more Participation of C3b, the major cleavage product of C3, in both the classical and alternative pathways of complement activation is modulated by several control proteins (1-3). Two of these, C3b inactivator (C3bINA) ~ (4, 5) and flirtglobulin (B1H) (2), have been extensively purified and characterized. It is now apparent that C3bINA is a protease, and that it blocks the biologic activities of C3b by cleaving peptide bonds in this molecule (1, 4, 6). The second protein, B1H, potentiates the activity of C3bINA; indeed, recent evidence indicates an absolute requirement for/31H in the cleavage of fluid phase C3b by C3bINA (4). In addition, highly purified fllH by itself beth directly inhibits the activity of C3b (4) and accelerates the rate of decay of the alternative pathway convertases, C3bB and C3bBP (2, 7). Of great interest is the mechanism by which /31H exerts these effects. No proteolytic activity that can be directly ascribed to B1H has been found. Direct binding of/31H to C3b and subsequent steric interference with the interaction of C3b with factor B and/or C5 is the most straightforward explanation; two lines of evidence, fluid phase depletion and agglutination by antibody to /31H of EAC43 previously exposed to/]IH (8), had indicated that such binding occurs. More recently, both this laboratory (9) and another (10) have presented further information about the binding of fllH to C3b-coated particles. The studies reported here give quantitative measurement of strength and valence of this binding, examine the influence of fluid phase C3 and C3b on it, and determine the effects that factor B (B) and properdin (P), which also bind to C3b, have on the binding of ~IH to C3b-coated cells. Materials and Methods Reagents. Bio-Rad Ag-I-X-10 (chloride form), Bio-Rex 70, electrophoresis grade polyacrylamide, bis-acrylamide, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were obtained from Bio-Rad Laborato

Caregivers of 350 children (176 younger participants, ages 24 to 42 months, mean age = 34.1 months; and 174 older participants, ages 43 to 61 months, mean age = 52.4 months) with ASDs, non-ASD developmental and/or psychiatric disorders, or without developmental concerns completed the SSI. A series of analyses resulted in shortened versions of the SSI: a 26-item SSI-Younger (SSI-Y) and a 21-item SSI-Older (SSI-O) version. The SSI-Y and SSI-O showed moderate convergence with ASD diagnostic measures and significantly differentiated ASD and non-ASD clinical groups. Sensitivity and specificity values for discriminating ASD and non-ASD clinical participants were 0.87 and 0.71, respectively for the SSI-Y and 0.81 and 0.70, respectively for the SSI-O. Scoring recommendations were made based on the ROC results.

A seventh ASD was found in a female panther necropsied in the field and is included in the pathological description but not the prevalence of ASDs in Florida panthers. One panther (FP205) with severe ASD also had tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD). Atrial septal defects and/or TVD are believed to have caused or contributed to the deaths of three (9%) Florida panthers in this study. Mean diameter Ϯ SD of ASDs was 9.0 Ϯ 4.7 mm (range 3 to 15 mm). Gross pathological changes attributed to ASDs/TVD in severely affected panthers (ASD Ն 10 mm) (n ϭ 4) included mild right ventricular dilatation (n ϭ 3) and hypertrophy (n ϭ 2), mild to severe right atrial dilatation (n ϭ 2), and acute pulmonary edema (n ϭ 3). Panthers with mild ASDs (ASD Յ 5 mm) (n ϭ 3) had no other detectable gross pathological changes associated with the ASDs. Histological examination of lungs of three panthers with severe ASDs revealed mild to moderate dilatation with fibrosis and smooth muscle atrophy of the tunica media of medium to large caliber arteries (n ϭ 2), interstitial and/or pleural fibrosis (n ϭ 2), perivascular fibrosis (n ϭ 1), and acute to chronic edema (n ϭ 3). Twenty-six necropsied panthers were examined one or more times while living; medical records were retrospectively evaluated. Antemortem radiographic, electrocardiographic, and echocardiographic examinations were performed on two panthers with severe ASDs (FP20 and FP205). Thoracic radiographic abnormalities in both included right heart enlargement, and in FP205 (severe ASD and TVD), mild pulmonary overperfusion. Electrocardiographic examination of FP205 revealed a right ventricular hypertrophy pattern, while FP205 had a normal electrocardiogram. Echocardiographic examination of FP20 revealed marked right atrial dilatation; a bubble contrast study indicated regurgitation across the tricuspid valve. Echocardiographic abnormalities in FP20 included right atrial and ventricular dilatation, atrial septal drop-out, and severe tricuspid regurgitation; non-selective angiography revealed significant left to right shunting across the ASD. All panthers with severe ASDs ausculted (n ϭ 3) had systolic right or left-sided grade I-V/VI murmurs loudest at the heart base. All male panthers with ASDs (n ϭ 3) (100%) and 9 of 17 (53%) male panthers without ASDs in this study were cryptorchid.
