Concerns have been raised about the use of humour especially at the bedside in the context of disease and death. Despite a proven beneficial role in improving attendance and content assimilation, very few studies have reported humour as a tool in medical teaching. We addressed the issue in an online moderated discussion (ML Web platform) amongst medical faculty (n=32) in the South East Asian Region as part of an e-learning exercise (part of FAIMER Fellowship programme). The discussion, lasting a month (Jan 2012) revolved around perspectives, comfort zones in the use of humour in medical teaching/learning process and documenting the use of edutainment in medical training. Faculty and fellows (each having at least 5-10 years of teaching experience with medical students) involved in discussion were from varied disciplines. The responses were collected over 4 weeks of participation. Participants were requested to refrain from direct and personal insults as a means of using humour. 199 e-mails (listserv) during the month long discussion (100 jokes besides others). Medical faculty (n=32) is primarily enthusiastic and willing to use humour in classroom/small group of students (Perspective); they are uncomfortable with patient situations (comfort zone). Bedside (situation) teaching is tense and gloomy. Risk of negative humour is disproportionately high. Medical learning situations need a "different" sense of humour (in Teaching/ Learning situation). Visual (e-based) and verbal (modules on humanities) may be the way ahead.

The present study aimed to assess associations of anthropometric parameters and body composition parameters, to improve treatment of SAM. We conducted a cross-section assessment using the enrolment data of children who participated in a multi-centric longitudinal controlled study from five Indian states. Fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) were determined by bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA). Six hundred fifty-nine children were enrolled in the study using WHZ < -3 criteria. Available data shows that WHZ, WAZ and BMIZ were significantly associated with FFMI while MUACZ was significantly associated with both FMI and FFMI. Children with both severe wasting and severe stunting had significantly lower FFMI compared to those who were only severely wasted. All forms of anthropometric deficits ...

Highest prevalence was for HBV (417 donors- 1.0%) followed by HCV (324 donors- 0.78 %) and HIV (88 donors- 0.21 %).Conclusions: Apparently healthy blood donors might carry, life threatening, double viral co-infections in their blood. Failure to diagnose and treat co-infection at an early stage results in serious complications and sequelae. For safe blood transfusion all blood units should be tested for compatibility and TTI’s with reduction in unnecessary blood transfusion.

Around one third of the world’s acutely malnourished children live in India. The WHO recommends community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) for managing children with SAM. In India, different states are implementing community-based SAM treatment programme, hereinafter called CSAM, using varieties of locally produced nutrient dense food items with different nutrient compositions. The study will assess the effectiveness of these state specific CSAM interventions. Methods The longitudinal quasi-experimental study will be undertaken in two purposively selected blocks of one district each in the four intervention states and one comparison state. From each state, 200 SAM children identified using weight-for-length/height z-score (WHZ)

(2) To study the sero-prevalence of TTIs among blood donors from the records. A record based study was conducted from June 2013- August 2013. Data were collected from the records of blood bank which also included data of blood donation camps. Data regarding sex, screening test results and type of donors were collected from the records. Out of 63803 donors, voluntary donors (56.34%) were more in comparison to replacement donors (43.66%). Out of all TTIs, prevalence of HBV (1.01%) was highest followed by Malaria (0.33%), HCV (0.14%), HIV (0.08%) and Syphilis (0.03%). TTIs were more prevalent in replacement donors than voluntary donors. The number of voluntary donors has risen from 2008 -2012, but there is male preponderance in both voluntary and replacement donors than females.

Poor nutrition also carries a huge economic burden for individuals and for the entire country. Undernutrition among children less than 5 years is associated with poor cognitive and educational performance, reduced work capacity and lower wages in adulthood. Individual productivity losses attributable to undernutrition are estimated to be more than 10 percent of lifetime earnings and around 2-3% of gross domestic product (GDP) loss (World Bank, 2006). India has a large proportion of the world’s children with undernutrition. One of the markers of undernutrition is SAM among children aged 6-59 months, defined by a weight-for-height/length Z-score (WHZ) <3, a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) <115 mm or by the presence ABSTRACT
