It plays a very important role in establishing human computer interface. We as humans are able to understand the emotions of other person but it is literally impossible for the computer to do so. The present work is to achieve the same as accurately as possible. Emotion detection can be done either through text, speech, facial expression or gesture. In the present work the emotions are detected using Electroencephalography (EEG) signals. EEG records the electrical activity within the neurons of the brain. The main advantage of using EEG signals is that it detects real emotions arising straight from our mind and ignores external features like facial expressions or gesture. Hence EEG can act as real indicator of the emotion depicted by the subject. We have employed Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Machine Learning techniques such as Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) to classify EEG signals into seven different emotions. The accuracy achieved with both the algorithms is computed and compared. We are able to recognize seven emotions using the two algorithms, SVM and LDA with an average overall accuracy of 74.13% and 66.50% respectively. This accuracy was achieved after performing a 4-fold cross-validation. Future applications of emotion detection includes neuro-marketing, market survey, EEG based music therapy and music player.

Research paper thumbnail of Development of soft sensor for neural network based control of distillation column

ISA Transactions, 2013

The present work is aimed at the design of Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) and adaptive linear network (... more The present work is aimed at the design of Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) and adaptive linear network (ADALINE) based soft sensors and their application in inferential control of a multicomponent distillation process. Further the ADALINE sensor is trained online using past measurements, to adapt the changes in the inputs and is termed as dynamic ADALINE (D-ADALINE) sensor. The soft sensors are then used in the control loop to obtain LM based inferential controller (LMIC), ADALINE based inferential controller (ADIC) and D-ADALINE based inferential controller (DADIC) for the process. The performance of dynamic controller is also analyzed for different inputs and sampling intervals. The comparison of results shows the efficient and robust prediction capability of D-ADALINE sensor and hence DADIC proves to be the best controller.

Research paper thumbnail of Ranking of all digital protection system components using cost based heuristic redundancy importance measure

2015 International Conference on Recent Developments in Control, Automation and Power Engineering (RDCAPE), 2015

Practically redundancy is most useful way of improving system reliability. In this paper, a new cost based importance measure termed as cost based heuristic redundancy importance measure (CBHRIM) is proposed for ranking of component. To the best of our knowledge such an importance measure does not exist. The results of this measure are demonstrated with the help of all digital protection system and compared with classical importance measures.
