Research paper thumbnail of Possible Beneficial Effects of Vitamin K and Osteocalcin on Glucose Metabolism

TURKISH MEDICAL STUDENT JOURNAL, 2020

The role of vitamin K, in bone metabolism and its effects on insulin resistance and Type-2 diabet... more The role of vitamin K, in bone metabolism and its effects on insulin resistance and Type-2 diabetes, have been discussed. The mechanism of vitamin K's beneficial effect on insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis is not yet known. Various biological active molecules such as adiponectin, leptin, and resistin, which is secreted from adipose tissue and have important roles in glucose metabolism, have been proposed to regulate bone metabolism. Some studies have suggested that bone metabolism is also effective on adipose tissue and energy metabolism. It is thought that osteocalcin, a vitamin K dependent protein is effective in glucose metabolism. The role of Vitamin K in glucose metabolism is thought to be partly due to the modulation of diabetes-related cytokines and other metabolic risk markers, as inflammation lies at the bottom of chronic metabolic diseases. The aim of this review is to explain the effect of Vitamin K and osteocalcin on glucose metabolism and its possible mechanisms of action.

Method: A total number of 77 individuals aged 65 and over were involved in this study. The diagnosis of anemia was made according to the plasma hemoglobin levels of the patients based on WHO criteria. The data related to eating habits and socio-demographic features of the individuals and their consumption frequency of some foods were collected through a questionnaire form administered face-to-face. Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA) and stadiometer were used for conducting anthropometric measurements. All statistical analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS)] and differences of p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of the participants was 72.1±4.9 years. The mean BMI was 28.8±4.7 kg/m2 of males and 33.6±5.7 kg/m2 of females. The prevalence of anemia was 31.6% in females and 10.3% in males. While there were no individuals with folate deficiency, 13.0% of the individuals were found to have B12 vitamin deficiency. The proportions of muscle mass and body water, visceral fat, and serum iron level in males were found significantly higher (p<0.05). The highest anemia frequency was observed in obese individuals (30.0%) and individuals aged 75 and over (22.7%) (p<0.05). While there was no relationship between the frequency of main and intermediate meal consumption and anemia, consumption of chicken was found to be significantly associated (p<0.05).Conclusion: Anemia in elderly people was determined to be significantly associated with age, gender, BMI, and the frequency of chicken consumption. Adequate and balanced nutrition for elderly people is important in preventing nutritional anemia.

The sampling of the study consisted of 282 volunteering teachers working in elementary schools in Ankara province. The questionnaire form consisted of four parts: general information, use of vitamin-minerals, questions about vitamin-minerals and health beliefs. The study findings were analyzed with SPSS software packet using suitable statistical methods. The sampling of the study involved 64 males(22.7%) and 212 females(77.3%). Forty one point five percent of the teachers stated that they used supplemental vitamins and minerals. It was found that the average vitamin-mineral related knowledge score of the participants was 14.3±2.6 and that the mean knowledge score of women was significantly higher than the average knowledge score of men (p<0.05). The mean belief score of the teachers was found to be 29.2±2.8, and it was determined that the mean...

In addition, it was aimed to compare the energy, macronutrient intake and diet qualities of individuals with/without SJL during school and non-school days. This study comprised 710 university students with mean age 21.58 ± 1.41 years. The presence of SJL was acknowledged if there was a difference of more than 1 hour between the middle of sleep time on school day and on non-school day. While the physical activity levels (PALs) of the individuals were determined with a 24-hour physical activity record, measurements such as waist circumference, neck circumference and body mass index were recorded for anthropometric measurements. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to determine the sleep quality of the individuals. Energy, macronutrients intake, and diet quality were calculated from the 24-h dietary recall of the individuals, and recorded for the school days and non-school days. In this study, 76% of the individuals (n = 542) were determined as exposed to SJL. Although there was no significant difference in their PALs, individuals with SJL had a higher waist (p < .05) and neck (p < .05) circumference, as well as higher body mass index (p < .05). Individuals with SJL were found to have significantly poor sleep quality (OR:1.109, p < .031) and sleep latency (OR:1.130, p < .001) after adjustment for confounding factors. When compared to school days, in the individuals with SJL, energy (p < .001), fat (p < .001), saturated fatty acids (SFA) (p < .001), and mono unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) (p < .001) were significantly increased; however, fiber intake (p < .001) was significantly reduced on non-school days. Although there was no significant difference in the diet quality scores between the groups on the school days, the diet quality of the individuals without SJL on non-school days was increased significantly (p < .05). In conclusion, SJL was associated with sleep loss, increased body mass index, and lowered diet quality in university students.

MATERIALS AND METHODS The study consisted of a total of 661 healthy university students with a mean age of 21.4 ± 1.38 years. Within the scope of the study, The Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) was used to determine the chronotypes of individuals, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to determine sleep quality, and a 24 h physical activity record was taken to determine physical activity levels. The caffeine intake of the individuals was determined using a food frequency questionnaire for the intake of caffeinated food and beverages. The role of mediators in the effect of late chronotype on BMI was evaluated via multiple mediation analysis. RESULTS In this study, evening-type individuals had higher daily caffeine intake, worse sleep quality (P < 0.001), and higher BMI (P < 0.05). When the effect of mediators was take...

Design/methodology/approach This study was carried out on 22 females and 21 males, who were aged between 20 and 25, with no chronic diseases and were not obese or on any diet. The data was collected face to face. In this study, the authors evaluated the consistency of nonconsecutive three-day 24-h recall method (3 × 24HR), which was chosen as a reference for the determination of food consumption, with one-day 24-h recall method (1 × 24HR), three-day food record method (3 × FR) and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), which has been frequently used in food consumption research. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) and Bland–Altman graphs were performed in the statistical analyses to determine the association between dietary assessment methods. Findings When the data obtained from the food consumption records were evaluated according to refe...
