Chantal Jumel

A graduate of Sorbonne University, I am a researcher, traveller, artist and writer, specialised in Indian visual and performing art (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Odisha, and Rajasthan). Author of two books « Voyage dans l’imaginaire Indien, Kolam, dessins éphémères des femmes tamoules » (A journey through graphical India, Kolam, ephemeral drawings by Tamil women) and « Kolam et Kalam, peintures rituelles éphémères de l’Inde du Sud » ( Kolam and kalam, South Indian ephemeral and ritual paintings), Geuthner, Paris, 2013-2010.

KŌLAM and KALAM, South Indian ephemeral and ritual paintings Summary of my book in French. The ep... more KŌLAM and KALAM, South Indian ephemeral and ritual paintings Summary of my book in French. The ephemeral drawings drawn daily on the thresholds of houses or in temples, known as kôlam in Tamil Nadu and kalam in Kerala, bear testimony to the richness of India’s graphical heritage. This ephemeral art form is part of a daily domestic ritual carried out by women in the case of Tamil Nadu, while in Kerala this is an occasional activity executed for specific rituals by men who are specialised in the art.
