The combustion of coal and biomass fuels in power plants generates deposits on the surfaces of su... more The combustion of coal and biomass fuels in power plants generates deposits on the surfaces of superheater / reheater tubes that can lead onto fireside corrosion. This type of materials degradation can limit the lives of such tubes in the long term, and better methods are needed to produce predictive models for such damage. This paper reports on four different approaches that are being investigated to tackle the challenge of modelling fireside corrosion damage on superheaters / reheaters: (a) CFD models to predict deposition onto tube surfaces; (b) generation of a database of available fireside corrosion data; (c) development of mechanistic and statistically based models of fireside corrosion from laboratory exposures and dimensional metrology; (d) statistical analysis of plant derived fireside corrosion datasets using multi-variable statistical techniques, such as Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR). The Healthy Growth Charter is an educational and health-promoting project aimed at an active invo... more The Healthy Growth Charter is an educational and health-promoting project aimed at an active involvement of the primary school children in health surveillance and protection. Being duly acquainted of the matter, scholars are asked to fill by their own a questionnaire on height, weight, sport attendance and other items of medical and demographic interest. According to the project, problems suitable of corrective measures, such as amblyopia, are signalled to the families and dealt individually. The project has been previously tested on about 1500 boys and girls from various Italian regions, showing that, despite the limits of self-reported data, it provides information in line with literature. Health inequalities in children remain an important problem also in Italy, and a second test of the Healthy Growth Charter was launched in a group of socially disadvantaged children. Photocatalytic degradation of atenolol in aqueous suspensions using specifically synthetized meso... more Photocatalytic degradation of atenolol in aqueous suspensions using specifically synthetized mesoporous based TiO 2 materials as photocatalysts under UVC (254 nm) irradiation was investigated. A batch reactor and a UV lamp 16 W power were used to test the ATL removal with several initial concentrations of ATL (4.5 − 30 mg/L) and four synthetized TiO 2 photocatalysts, characterized by different BET surface areas and average pore sizes. Moreover, the effect of solution pH (4.8 − 9.0) and of the oxygen presence were investigated. The performances of the synthetized photocatalysts were compared with commercial Degussa P25. The atenolol degradation was studied using different concentration of catalyst (50 and 1000 mg/L) showing a maximum removal efficiency of 65%. Although the new catalysts showed a lower efficiency when compared to commercial P25, they can be easily recovered from water being in the form of micro-aggregate, and then reused without remarkable changes. The experimental data were fitted using a pseudo first order kinetic model.
