Chloé Conickx (PhD-student) is currently doing research on mesmerism as a 'paideic' therapy in late eighteenth-century Paris. Her research interests are intellectual and religious history, science of mind history, history of spirituality with a focus on so-called 'breaking points' like the 16th-century Reformation and the 18th-century Enlightenment.

Max Weber’s concept of “disenchantment” states that the Reformation introduced a revolution in Christian ritual praxis: a purification of all “magical” elements. Using Heinrich Kramer’s Malleus maleficarum as a case study, this paper shows how, pace Weber, such systematic demarcations were already made in the late Middle Ages.
