Epilepsy, particularly childhood epilepsy, remains a challenge to treat. The management of epilepsy is primarily based on theuse of anti-epileptic drugs. Surgery and diet therapy are the other modes of treating childhood seizures. To get an insight into the utilization pattern of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) used in pediatric seizures. Methods: This prospective, longitudinal study was conducted for a period of 8months in Paediatric Neurology Department of a tertiary care teaching hospital. The data collected from 50 children at the end of the study, were compiled in a specially designed data form and were analyzed. Results: The distribution of paediatric seizures was found to be high in male children (62%) and in the age group of 2 to 5 y (46%). The majority of the children (70%) were diagnosed with Generalized Tonic-clonic s...

A single specimen was collected while conducting a trial fishing with 49.5m Cosmos mid water trawl onboard FORV Sagar Sampada between latitude 11o 47.767'N and longitude 73o 39.065'E at a depth range of 350 to 400 m during the month of October 2013. The morphometric measurements of the specimen are described and are compared with the same species reported from the North Atlantic Ocean. The female specimen measured 788 mm in standard length, 22.50 mm in mantle length, 89.26 mm fin length and weighed 85.38 gm.

Research paper thumbnail of Striated muscle calcium-stimulated cysteine protease (calpain-like) activity promotes myeloperoxidase activity with exercise

To investigate the relationship between Ca2+-stimulated proteolysis (calpain-like activity) and neutrophil accumulation [myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity], cardiac and plantaris muscles from rats (n = 10) completing 1 h exercise (25 m/min) were investigated. Exercise promoted increases (P<0.05) in both calpain-like and MPO activities; ranging from 2.79 to 58.9 U/g wet weight (ww) and 0.03 to 4.88 U/g ww respectively. Pearson's correlational analysis (r) on calpain-like and MPO activities for cardiac and plantaris muscle data were 0.97 (P<0.001) and 0.68 (P<0.05) respectively, with a combined r of 0.83 (P<0.001) for both muscles across all conditions. To investigate further the extent to which calpain-like activity may promote neutrophil accumulation, another exercise group (n = 5) was pre-injected with the cysteine protease inhibitor, E64c, 1 h before exercise. Administration of E64c lowered calpain-like and MPO activities by 66% and 56% respectively (average from both muscles). From these results it is concluded that a relationship exists between Ca2+-stimulated proteolysis and neutrophil accumulation into striated muscle with exercise, and that the calpain system is involved in localizing the neutrophilic response with exercise.
