Sains Malaysiana, Feb 29, 2024

Allicin and quercetin have significantly inhibited tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and increased levels of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in rats. However, there is no known investigation on the combination of both compounds on TNF-α, TGF-β, and VEGF as a topical healing agent via inflammatory mechanisms. This study aims to determine the synergistic interaction between topical application of allicin and quercetin in enhancing diabetic wound healing via inflammatory in Wistar rats. A total of 45 male Wistar rats weighing 180-250 g were induced diabetes by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (45 mg/kg bw). Diabetic rats underwent wound creation under anaesthesia and a square-shaped open excision wound was made with a full-thickness measurement of 1 cm × 1 cm on the right side of the rat's back. Rats were randomly allocated into group namely, vehicle control, allicin, quercetin, and a combination of allicin and quercetin which is applied topically once a day at a dose of 10 mg/mL for 7 days. Our finding showed that once daily topical application of allicin and quercetin, both independently and synergistically, increased levels of TGF-β and VEGF, as well as decreased levels of TNF-α of the rat diabetic wound model compared with the vehicle control group over 7th day. The synergistic effects of allicin and quercetin significantly enhanced diabetic wound healing via inflammation in rats, by suppressing inflammatory cytokines and stimulating growth factors hence offering a new window of an experimental study.

A “reading man” flap is a recent local flap procedure, which has been used to treat this problem.Case Presentation: We report a case of keratotic basal cell carcinoma in the right infraorbital area. After wide excision, a defect of 40x35 mm was found, which was very close to the lid margin and close to the bottom of the eyebrow, which was reconstructed by reading man flap with slight modifications. Our modification is to extend the leg flap laterally, to avoid the lower part of the brow. So that the eyebrows are still protected from the flap incision. Conclusion: Reading man flap as a circular defect closure option is a useful addition to the plastic surgeon's mastery of techniques for performing round periorbital defect reconstruction. Reading man flap can be designed flexibly. It is a good option for the closure of ...

Background Vascular supply has a main role in flap survival. Nutrition was delivered to a tip... more Background Vascular supply has a main role in flap survival. Nutrition was delivered to a tip of flap by interconnecting subdermal plexus. The nutrition brought by it’s vascular supply sould be sufficient to keep the viability of flap. In the context of flap viability, angiogenesis process is needed to maintain vascular blood supply because some pre-existing vessel was interrupted by elevation of cutaneous flap. Remote Hyperthermic Preconditioning (RHP) is a procedure that can stimulate VEGF expression and stimulate HSP-70 secretion. VEGF as a dominant growth factor for angiogenesis and HSP-70 as a protein chaperon play a predominant role to upregulation plasminogen activator and acceleration of recanalization microvascular for angiogenesis and anti apoptosis effect resulting improvement of flap viability. Methods Random pattern skin flap was made by elevation along 1cm X 4 cm on abdominal skin of 32 adult Winstar Rats using mess and metzembaum. They were divided in...

One of the most dominant facial components is the eye. So far, there have been limited studies on the eye profile of Indonesian women. The available standard values of attractive eye profile are still based on study samples of Caucasian women. Standard values specific of Indonesian women are needed by Indonesian plastic and reconstructive surgeons to form a baseline anthropometric template and by forensic anthropologist for assessing and reconstructing biologic description of Indonesian individuals. Purpose This study was performed to obtain basic data of eye profile to establish standard value of Indonesian attractive women’s eye profile. Methods This study was a descriptive study. Twenty one Indonesian young women who met the inclusion criteria, one of them is being attractive, underwent direct anthropometry of eye profile. Both ...

Treatment of chronic wounds remains difficult, in spite of better understanding of pathophysiologic and greater adherence to recognized standards of care. Even with recent advances stemming from breakthroughs in recombinant growth factors, up to almost 50% of chronic wounds that have been present for more than a year remain resistant to treatment. Adipose- derived stem cells (ADSCs) are adult stem cells that are easily harvested and of great interest for plastic surgeon. Mesenchymal stem cells within the stromal- vascular fraction of subcutaneous adipose tissue, that adipose- derived mesenchymal stem cells have been used in skin repair with satisfactory results. The production and secretion of growth factors have been reported to be an essential function of ADSCs. Specifically, ADSCs secrete basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF)’s reseptors that can induce tissue regeneration and stimulates healing of ...
