Some see it as an inevitable catastrophe: whether they perceive it as God's punishment for our sins or as a revenge of our planet for the misdeeds of the human race. On the other hand, some see it as an opportunity: whether to enlarge the scope and profitability of their businesses or to expand their influence and power. However, as any other kind of crisis, this one also represents a turning point; and so for most people it is becoming clear that the manner in which it is going to be resolved is crucial for the future of all of us. Thus, the burning question is: are we supposed to be pessimistic or optimistic about its resolution?

The intensified and clearly evident crisis of the capitalist world-system during the last decade ... more The intensified and clearly evident crisis of the capitalist
world-system during the last decade gave rise to an
increased number of various anti-systemic movements
and sentiments, thus setting the main task for the
contemporary European Left in terms of articulating this
oppositional potential into a viable emancipatory politics.
Hence, the leftist political strategy - mainly the one
expounded by Podemos and, to a lesser extent, by Syriza
- has focused on populism in the sense that late Ernesto
Laclau has given this term.

The essay’s first section deals with the possibilities of conceiving the notion of immaterial labor within the Marxian theoretical framework by stressing the differences between mental and intellectual labor. The second discusses the conception of the material effects of doing theory as given in Althusser’s move from his early theoricist determination of (Marxist) philosophy as “theory of theoretical practice” to the rectified and expanded one that conceives it as—in the last instance—the “class struggle in theory”. The concluding section investigates the possibilities of a critical usage of theory within the framework of contemporary art events, which could eventually escape subsumption under the capital-relation.

In a highly polarized situation - that of bringing the decades' long conflict to a resolution by unilaterally declaring Kosovo as independent state or by the Serbian government's firm contention that Kosovo remains an integral part of the internationally recognized state of Serbia - organising the kind of exhibition that brings together people from Kosovo and Serbia can undoubtedly be rendered as an exception. Nevertheless, the sequence of events that drove the (non)realization of the exhibition proved that the most of things that have happened are not exceptions, but almost rules of the game which could be called the peripheral politics of culture.

Speaking from personal practical experience of an NGO “creative worker” in the field of cultural production, I would like to approach the question of the appropriation of critique through the neoliberal structuration of the creative labor and its subjugation to the dominant ideological patterns of the “content consumption” by trying to point out the possible theoretical venues for reflecting the issues that practice set forth. The issues around the PPPYuArt project could be summarized in a question: “Did we [Prelom kolektiv] just add up to the process of value production – and, therefore, actively support the dominant neoliberal economy – by enabling the continuation of (art) historical discourse construction under the auspices of the bank fund and its auxiliary bodies [much like Soros in the 1990s, the Erste bank has the projects Kontakt and the network of Transit galleries]?” yields to a reexamination of the political economy of “creative labor” as productive labor and its subsumation under capital-relation.

In the third and final publication accompanying the project "Working Title: Archive" we present a selection of theoretical essays about archive work understood in this way, as well as texts related to a series of workshops organised by the Muzeum Sztuki. We confront diverse visions of archival space by combining theoretical and historical perspectives, as well as indicating their points of convergence: in places where historical practice is in need of reflection, historical and mnemonic experiences become the thematised object, whilst philosophical thought touches the material document.

Including essays by Michel de Certeau, Andrzej Lesniak, Pierre Fedida, Shepherd Steiner, Tomasz Zaluski, Dmitry Vilensky and collective Chto Delat?, Jelena Vesic, WHW, Dusan Grlja and Prelom Kolektiv.
