For it, the Utopias of different authors will be crossed, convinced that this reading can add a particular precision in the search of agreements on the space of the city, opening the possibility of different interpretations and definitions of the interaction’s modalities with it. It will try to investigate, beyond the critiques and the projects -political, religious, social-, between the arguments that cross, not only refer to the architectural discipline, but to all the areas of the knowledge, as human action that not only they describe the world, but it changes it - determining what it describes-. Nevertheless, this is not a study on the Utopias, but on the point between the utopia and the reality, understood from the beginning of place and non-place in which there is placed our experience of being in the world. Media spaces, non-places, virtual spaces or cyberspaces, represent today the capacity of the man to dream and create: the question is on the city - and the network of relations that constitute it-, and on the precariousness of the processes that have generated it. And these new spaces open the possibility of a complementary vision that tries to reflect the complexity of the different interpretations of the city, where the city offers the strategies in order that these could be superposed, not as material, but intellectual device.

The purpose of the research is to experiment with how, inside the “construction” of the contemporary landscape, a weak approach is able to defy the object/architectonic event and established methodologies of urban studies, by going beyond the designative
value of architecture.
Moreover, through a weak language, in a weak context, with recycled and innovative materials, the topic identifies “decoration” as able to transform urban scenarios, to privilege relational and open spaces over built ones.
In this direction, the notion of ecology and of an ecological system, as intended by Landscape Urbanism, becomes the disciplinary infrastructure of the method, in which ecology is technonature, or an evolution of nature in artificial terms, by focusing on the role of transdisciplinarity as crucial in transforming codes and instruments of urban design."

The workshop reactivates this line of research, through an interpretation of the landscape as a new experiment in urban disciplines, able to replace the ascertained statutes of architecture and urban design.
The attempt of the workshop is to propose a renewal of our discipline that arises primarily from a conceptual experiment and afterward as a formal result. So that an elemental process in art and science (to chose an ideal natural territory, to conceptualize it and to project) will result in a new spatial territory.
The student will be called to define a new taxonomy of design based on Nature, leading to a non-real city, but to a place of re-definition of the fundamental codes of architectural culture, its hierarchies and its practices.
In particular, he will be called to build a micro and heterotrophic microcosm - an hologram - that represents a new idea of the city as "Primitive Nature”: as well as in the paintings of Rousseau and in Borges’s thought, Nature, its bestiary, its codes, is proposed as a new archeology of language and of its role, experiencing new projectual categories that undermine the compositional language in the strict sense.
The aim of the workshop is to build 30 experiments in vitro, 30 "Genetic Gardens" definable as landscape islands within a generic urban context, between art and science.
The game and the paradox will be the project's tools.
Prato Factories Nature. The New Operative Plan, 2019
The multiplicity of procedures and strategies that have been generated in recent years in Prato, ... more The multiplicity of procedures and strategies that have been generated in recent years in Prato, principally through the recent Operative Plan, is evidence of a phenomenon that deserves to be observed and studied.
The case of Prato, through its original vision of the issue of the environment, its essential role when it comes to transformation and reuse, and its impressive participative and communicative way of proceeding, has highlighted a new way of thinking about urban planning, outlining a new theoretical/applicative approach for the contemporary city.
Inscribable in the disciplinary parenthesis of Landscape Urbanism, the Operative Plan indeed highlights specific methodological originality, articulated through the corpus of the objectives and strategies expressed, framed principally through a transdisciplinary and innovative lens: an exportable model of a new kind of planning that is rooted in the most evolved form of urban metabolism.
Already site of urban experimentation par excellence inspired by its structure as a “factory city” - among these, the well-known No-Stop City and the Structural Plan by Bernardo Secchi (1993-1996) - the New Operative Plan confirms Prato as an urban laboratory, through two strategies: The technology of Nature and the Project as Hologram that contains in themselves an idea of the city as a whole.
Through the solid experience and the decisions made by the Planning Office – which developed the project from the Operative Plan – and specific consultancies – including that of Stefano Mancuso on Green Benefits and Stefano Boeri on Urban Forestry – Prato, therefore, formulates a city that is wholly “resilient” even in its “development,” and through ecology responds to the global challenges of climate change but also to the local challenges of residents’ well-being, as required by the Pact of Amsterdam and the European Agenda.
Through the ecological figure, the Plan is articulated like a declassification of classical planning; like an “inversion” of the urbanistic process, in which the specific projects become holograms that contain in themselves an idea of the city as a whole, becoming the engines of its transformation.

A collection of outcomes of a procedure achieved in vitro during the intensive course of Landscape Design I taught at the Politecnico di Milano in the 2015-2016 academic year.
The attempt has been to propose a renewal of the discipline that arises primarily from a conceptual experiment, and afterward as a formal result. So that an elemental process in science (observation of the object, scanning it in the laboratory, processing the outcome of the scan) will result in a new spatial modeling”.
