This activity aims to explore the potentials and challenges and identify the gaps amongst different sectors in different countries. Through this workshop, we will have a common understanding of what we face. It explores how we can work collaboratively to achieve a better purpose, i.e., to grow HCI and UX fields in Southeast Asia. This one-day online workshop was conducted as a collocated event of CHI 2022 and was attended by delegates from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. This paper is a summary of the individual papers produced by delegates. CCS CONCEPTS • Human-centered computing → Human computer interaction (HCI); HCI design and evaluation methods.

The symposium aims to bring together both early-career and senior HCI academia and UX practitioners from industries in Asia and bring about cross-exchange of information and transfer of knowledge in a multidisciplinary environment and multi-socioeconomic aspects of HCI research and also foster social ties and collaboration in the field of HCI. Beyond showcasing the latest Asian-inspired HCI work and those focusing on incorporating Asian sociocultural factors in their design, implementation, evaluation, and improvement, the Asian CHI Symposium 2023 is a sandbox for academically rigorous discourse platform for both HCI academic and UX practitioners to present their latest research findings and solutions that reflect the expansion of HCI theory and applications towards culturally inclusive design for diverse audiences in Asia. In addition to circulating ideas and envisioning future research in HCI, this symposium aims to foster social networks among academics (researchers and students) and practitioners and grow a research community from Asia.

The pandemic has not yet finished; thus, education institutions need to consider this disruption as a long-term situation and therefore need to make a significant adjustment. Design Thinking has been used for a long time to solve complex problems, but there has not been any comprehensive implementation of Design Thinking in tertiary education. In this study, we present some of the ongoing research we conducted since last year in Cohort 1 to critically evaluate and redefine the UX Design Research course delivered by the Industrial Design Department of a state university in Indonesia. The intervention of the Design Thinking framework, the so-called Design Thinking 2.0, has led to significant changes in the course and gradually improved the teaching and learning in Cohorts 2 and 3. Authentic learning goals and appropriate support mechanisms have provided sustainable improvement of the course. Various types, materials, and models of jewelry can affect the value of the jewelry. One of them is gold jewelry. Gold jewelry is not only preferred because of the visual aesthetics of the style and model of the jewelery, but also because the weight of gram values in each design has a stable investment price, and can also be an identity that reflects the user's lifestyle and is the most considered factor when choosing jewelry. In the value of use, some jewelry has its own value for a culture and is often worn for traditional events or certain holidays, such as Eid or weddings. Innovations in jewelry designs are needed to produce new products that can meet market opportunities, one of which is multiform jewelry design, where one model of jewelry can be worn in two or more ways. This study focuses on jewelry with the concept of 2in1 which takes the theme of Arabian Night on the basis of cooperation with one of the largest gold companies in Indonesia to issue gold jewelery designs that will be produced and accepted by the public.

Economic instability has brought significant business challenges in the community. The involvement of outsiders to collaborate with craftspeople in order to support business innovation as well as strengthen the social capital in the community is essential. However, facilitating a rural community to formulate and implement bottom-up planning needs an integrated approach. In this paper, we explain a participatory project in the rural craftspeople community that resulted in a collective action. The project aimed at uniting and empowering rural craftspeople focusing on the unique skills and knowledge of participants. There are some aspects influencing the success of collective action: the ability to understand the local political situation; the role of facilitators to respect and support the unique potential of craftspeople; and the economic benefit of the program.

The Indonesian government has developed advisory programs to help traditional rural craftspeople compete, however these programs have not achieved sustainable results. Traditional craft industries produce both products for daily use and souvenir products. Traditional souvenir products have a greater opportunity to attract a local market, or even a global market than traditional products for daily use. The opportunity to compete in global market can be approached through tourism, because purchase of souvenirs is plentiful within shopping expenditure in tourism (Littrell et al. 1994; Lehto et al. 2004 in Wilkins 2010). This paper describes the consideration given to the choice of communication modes to engage participation of rural Indonesian craftspeople over the course of a significant 3 year project that aims to grow their self-determination, design and business skill. We demonstrate the variety and subtlety of oral and written forms of communication used by the facilitator during the project. The culture, the communication skill and the influence of tacit knowledge affect the effectiveness of some modes of communication over the others, as well as the available infrastructure. Considerations are specific to the case of rural Indonesian craftspeople, but general lessons can be drawn.

There are many traditional souvenir craft industries in Indonesia, and they have to compete in today‘s global markets. The craftsmanship and uniqueness of traditional crafts must be developed to attract a larger market. This competition is not easy for craftspeople, neither financially nor culturally. The authors propose some innovation strategies to facilitate craftspeople in generating ideas based on their traditional value, to ensure their sustainability in global context. However, even though there are a number of studies about the craft industry and souvenirs, there is little research focused on the souvenir product development process, especially in the traditional craft industry. Considering that souvenirs are products for pleasure which require hedonic value more than utilitarian value, the offered innovation strategy refers to the strategy applied in existing industries that...

Contextual inquiry and participatory action research were used to understand the local context, including motivations, barriers and opportunities and to collaboratively develop strategies for advancement and innovation. The study documents participatory design projects undertaken to make, sell and promote hedonic products. It identifies the importance of understanding local context and individual craftsperson aspirations in designing collaborative support programs. It also provides an in depth insight into the Indonesian rural craft industry.
