MaTiDo, Majolica Tiles on Domes, is an adaptive tool that allows a user to place “fish scale” on revolution domes and oval or elliptical ones, on domes with ribs and domes without ribs. MaTiDo can be used to reproduce the look of the real domes and virtually reconstruct domes modified or destroyed. These ideal models are suitable for different uses, for Cultural Heritage dissemination or in HBIM process. The main geometric problem to address is how to evenly distribute on doubly curvature surfaces flat tiles that are all the same size. MaTiDo is being developed for colour automatic distribution on tiles in order to generate different decorative patterns on extrados dome surfaces.

The goal is research for optimized cutting pattern to manufacture a 3D surface using a rigid materials. To achieve this goal it is necessary a thorough investigation of the geometric nature of the surfaces that make up the designed shape, especially about their curvature. From a methodological point of view first we have classified different kinds of existing patterns, known and designed, depending on the degree of curvature of the shape to be constructed (Crane et al. in Kerf-Based Complex Wood Systems, 2010). So, we are testing different kerfing pattern to increase bending performance. To investigate and developing the potential of them, we have tested the different performances of available tools for subtractive manufacturing techniques. However, it is intuitive that this research can only be extended to certain kinds of materials: the material used for this research is the fir plywood. The goal is to produce objects with different dimensions and functions, according architectural multiscalarity approach, from a design object to a medium scale architecture.

The main question is to define the relationships between the coffer shape, the layout used for coffers distribution on dome surface and different kind of surfaces. With regard to coffered domes we have analyzed the methods illustrated by Francesco Milizia, Giuseppe Vannini and some historical surveys. We have grouped coffered domes in relation to grid geometry and to coffer shape. We have defined three different ways to distribute the coffers in relation to different grid layout: grid composed by 2D lines (meridians and parallels), grid composed by 3D lines on surface (lattice of rhumb lines) or coffers distribution between ribs. We have analyzed each of them and we have defined algorithmic models in relation to spherical domes. The main goal of our research is to study what's different in not spherical domes, such as policentrical domes, ellipsoidal domes or ovoidal domes, generated using curves network. We have compared computational models based on treatises rules with particular case studies. This comparison allows us to do a critical analysis based on geometric rules. From a methodological point of view we have built a parametric model able to connect the different processes, using the same parameters. By comparing this model with point clouds, it is possible to evaluate analogies or identify new rules that will be used to develop a more complex parametric model based on surveys.

Digital systems record series of data in real time, facilitating the automation of comparison, control and preventive evaluation activities aimed at the conscious management of the phenomenal reality based on the interrelationship between different information. According to these premises, this contribution presents first results of a research activity aimed at testing VPL parametric tools aimed at mapping environmental data and phenomena involving architectural surfaces and explicitating the comparison between data by graphical alert system. VPL tools are designed for a thematic image colour sampling. The main goal is monitoring the state of conservation of decorated architectural surfaces or artworks placed in unfavourable environmental conditions to facilitate preventive and intervention activities. The case study chosen to test this approach and digital tools is the fresco preserved in the Filangieri Hall of the State Archives in Naples.

A theoretical reflection on the topic is followed by the discussion about the results at two different universities (Alicante and Naples) where students have been proposed a similar assignment: a digitally conscious design of a lamp. In Alicante, the methodological approach was guided by the relation of the ideation process and the use of specific digital fabrication strategies; students were encouraged to develop and rework their designs taking into account the way in which they should be digitally fabricated. In Naples the teaching proposal involved a disciplinary approach; a deep understanding of the digital fabrication processes including the manufacturing limitations of the machinery employed involving a precise geometric control over the design. In both cases, students had to face a real study case of the design and production making use of digital tools. This comprehensive approach implied the consideration of the project as a process making students aware of the difficulties of getting their ideas materialised through digital fabrication and how their designs had to evolve in order to step over the problems encountered in the manufacturing process in different ways.

The technological aspect is very important because it is closely linked to the current tools of computational design and digital fabrication, now based on the logic of visual scripting and, therefore, more accessible to a wide range of users. From the past to the present, the architect is called to deepen the basic theoretical contents of the creation and communication of architecture and to optimize the problems that affect the feasibility of the architecture, developing and disseminating new solutions in the professional field as in teaching and research fields. More specifically, in a Ph.D. thesis research developed in the of Ph.D. course of study in Architectural Techonology and Architectural and Environmental Representation at the DiArc—Department of Architecture, University Federico II, Naples (Italy), the topic of the discretization and paneling of complex surfaces was developed to systematize the basic and advanced principles that are capable of supporting the elaboration of possible solutions and innovative approaches to this constructive, economic and aesthetic problem. Concretely, thanks to the collaboration developed during a workshop sponsored by the research center Medaarch—Mediterranean Academy of Architecture—Mediterranean FabLab (Cava de’ Tirreni, Salerno, Italy), the object of the experiment was the physical construction of a pavilion standing discretized in planar hexagonal panels. Therefore, this experience demonstrates how the cooperation between academia, research centers and specialized local companies throughout the territory is important because it allows to strengthen and integrate the expertise of all those involved and encourages the development of multidisciplinary approaches. So, this experience is the stimulus and the outcome of a specific search path developed by the Ph.D. thesis research, as well as an important opportunity to realize the content of current advanced research conducted within the research field of Architectural Geometry, with important consequences in Sciences of Representation’s disciplinary field and, more specifically, of the Applications of Descriptive Geometry. In addition, these experiences represent an important source of inspiration useful to start an innovative and challenging educational offer, organizing equipped laboratories inside universities and specific first level courses. Therefore, to demonstrate and deepen these reflections, it is interesting to show results, theoretical and practical, of the research experience and teaching reflections between theory and practice.

The use of procedural modelling techniques, based on set of geometric rules, is spreading the construction of parametric objects and processes for survey data mapping. In this research field one of the most common methodological approach consists in testing different procedures based on use of specific data from point cloud. One of the main problem to solve is to define the best parameters to use in relation to geometric features of different architectural element and what are the data to extract from point cloud. Starting from shape grammar approach, the main goal of our research is to define 3D parametric models for ribbed vaults suitable to generate 3D smart model for different uses. Most researches in this area deal the case of rectangular or square plan vaults, we addressed the case of trapezoidal vaults and different rules used for apsidal vaults tracing. Our aim is to define an adaptive parametric model that we can use to generate a 3D ideal model or a mixed reality based model. In order to evaluate our tool we compared two 3D models with point clouds: the first is based on geometric rules from sources, the second is based on some specific data from point cloud. Testing the tool on two gothic churches in Naples, the church of S. Lorenzo and the church of S.Maria di Donnaregina, we are going to improve it.

Psychogeography, introduced by Debord in the 1950s, studies correlations between psyche and environment, challenging classical geography and supporting the creative re-definition of urban space. According to these premises, Shadow Street Art can be considered as an alternative form of Street Art thanks to the strong psycho-environmental dimension and involvement generated by exclusively monochrome, colorless graffiti and sudden, evanescent projections. Furthermore, the main goal of street artists who work with real shadows is to design 4D works: time is the main parameter to control the whole process. Parametric-generative digital tools allow to
