In this study, tourism activities and their environmental effects on the Edremit-Kucukkuyu coasta... more In this study, tourism activities and their environmental effects on the Edremit-Kucukkuyu coastal band have been examined. First, Edremit-Kucukkuyu coastal region was examined for climate, temperature, raining, evaporation, beaches and rivers. Then, the coastal problems, such as floods, lack of financial budget of municipalities, political conflicts, deterioration of shore line, urbanization, running out of water research, lack of infrastructure and destruction of olive trees, caused by tourism and the other factors were specified a management program for the solution of these problems was suggested by utilizing the data obtained about the study area. Preparing management program is guided by five main principles that are sustainability, dynamism, elasticity, protection and multi-stakeholder principle. This management program includes seven sub-projects and each ones is controlled by proposing integrated Project Management Commission that related to Balikesir University, Society of Profession and Public. In this study, it was also determined that the unconscious use of the natural resources in the study area started to deteriorate the environment. The main problem in the area is the fact that natural resources has been destructed by its own primary users and there is no sustainable coastal management strategies in these areas as in Edremit-Kucukkuyu case.

It is possible to reduce the problems that may affect the success of a project by managing such risk factors through a comprehensive risk management strategy. In this study, it was aimed to determine the significance levels of risk factors faced in highway projects. Risk factors seen in agreement, design and construction stages of highway projects were specified by carrying out a literature review. The specified risk factors were classified under 7 main titles according to the source of risk, and emergence of the relevant risk factor at which stage of the highway project along with which sub-risks was investigated. Risk factors were evaluated by administrating questionnaires to the individuals experienced in highway projects and specialised in their fields. Later on, risk analysis was performed using the decision matrix method and their importance levels were determined. Obtained results suggested that the risk of economic crisis under the title of economic and political risks was the most important risk factor.

It involves industrial requirements, such as developing technologies, related expertise, demand variability, high production speed and progress. Firms in the industry use subcontractors to produce fast, effective solutions. Therefore, projects' success varies depending on subcontractors' rather than general contractors' performance. This study aimed to develop a model of selection criteria for subcontractors and measure their impact on project success. Construction firms using subcontractors were chosen as the target group. Doloi et al.'s [1] model, which measures the impact of contractor selection on project success, was developed (by adding safety performance) and used to measure subcontractors' impact on project success. Data on the selection of subcontractors from 93 construction firms that employ subcontractors in their projects were collected through a survey. The impact of the subcontracting selection factor on projects' overall performance was presented with five hypotheses and modeled using a structural equation model. The weight of each selection factor in the subcontracting selection and the impact on the overall project were designated in the model by determining the standardized regression weights (β). Four hypotheses were accepted and one rejected. This study may contribute to the prequalification conditions in the process of selecting subcontractors in the future.

The "Politics Perception Scale", developed by Kacmar and Ferris [1] in 1991, was used to measure the political behavior within the firm. The absence of such a research for construction sector employees is the starting point of this study. In this study, the perceptions of organizational politics encountered in construction sector employees were analyzed using the "Politics Perception Scale". Data on the items directed to the participants were collected by a questionnaire. Frequency distribution of measurement items was obtained and reliability analysis was made for the data. Graphical distributions of the items used in the measurement of the factors that constitute the perception of organizational politics scale (POPS) are presented. Correlation coefficients between factors were calculated by correlation analysis. The results showed that among the 5 factors that constitute the perception of organizational politics scale, the factor of "self-serving content" ranks first in organizational behavior.

The emergence of knowledge management in this capacity poses enormous challenges to executives of construction firms. This paper proposes a model for benchmarking those knowledge management practices of AEC firms that can guide and assist construction business executives in meeting these challenges. The proposed model incorporates benchmarking and knowledge management concepts with importance-performance analysis (IPA) maps. It is a simple visual tool that can provide powerful diagnostic information to executives of AEC firms by evaluating their firm's knowledge management practices, identifying their firm's comparative advantages and disadvantages with regard to each knowledge management practice, and setting priorities for managerial actions related to knowledge management practices that need improvement. The emergence of knowledge management as a key organizational capability for creating competitive advantage poses enormous challenges to executives of construction firms. This paper proposes a model for benchmarking the knowledge management practices of construction firms that can guide and assist construction business executives to meet these challenges. The proposed model incorporates benchmarking and knowledge management concepts with Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) and Comparative Performance Analysis (CPA) maps. The IPA and CPA maps are visual management tools that have been commonly used for continuous improvements in processes and the performance of firms. Yet they have not been used in the construction management literature or for evaluating the knowledge management practices. The proposed model can be used by construction firms as an internal performance measurement tool to evaluate their knowledge management practices. It can provide powerful diagnostic information to construction business executives of construction firms in order to evaluate their firm's knowledge management practices, identify their firm's comparative advantages and disadvantages with regard to each knowledge management practice, and set priorities for managerial actions related to knowledge management practices that need improvement. A real-world case study was conducted by administering a survey to 105 construction firms operating in Turkey and is presented to illustrate the implementation and utility of the proposed model.

Evaluating knowledge management practices is considered one of the most important challenges facing firms in today's business environment. This paper proposes a model for evaluating the knowledge management practices of construction firms. The proposed model incorporates knowledge management concepts and multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks to construct an importance-comparative performance analysis (ICPA) map, a simple visual tool that can provide powerful diagnostic information to executives of construction firms. The model evaluates a firm's knowledge management practices, identifies its competitive advantages and disadvantages in each knowledge management practice, and sets priorities for managerial actions to improve knowledge management practices. A real-world case study was conducted by administering a survey to 105 construction firms operating in Turkey and is presented to illustrate the implementation and utility of the proposed model. The case study findings provided preliminary support for the validity of the proposed model.
