This paper aims to explore the relevance of developing institutional repositories for open and unrestricted access to confined resources, and discusses academic and research libraries roles in developing institutional repositories; the types of software to be used for the development; and the hardware requirements for server setup and copyright issues. With more establishment of institutional repositories, access to localized information domiciled in the remote institutions can be easily accessed by visiting the institutional library online to retrieve the material. Design/methodology/approach To provide a thorough breakdown of the building of institutional repositories in the University of Ilorin, Library, webliography sources were consulted. This study therefore examined leadership styles as determinants of library personnel's job performance in public university libraries in North-Central Nigeria. The Paper adopted a survey research design of a survey method in order to objectively collect information from the respondents. The population for the study was 421 (140 librarians and 281 library officers and library assistants) in public universities in North Central states in Nigeria while, total enumeration was adopted for the selection of 421 research subjects used in this study. Data were collected using a self-developed, validated, pretested (Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient value of 0.801, and 0.750) and administered questionnaire titled "Leadership Style and Job Performance Assessment Questionnaire (LSJPAQ)" which was designed through the extensive literature review. The results revealed that, democratic leadership style was most adopted or exhibited by librarians/library managers (average of 3.51) while, librarians/library managers do not exhibit or adopt the autocratic and laissez-faire styles of leadership (grand of 2.95 and 1.93 respectively) in public university libraries in North-Central Nigeria. The study also showed that the performance of library personnel in the studied universities in North-Central Nigeria was very good (grand of 3.24). Findings from the tested null hypotheses revealed that, there was a positive correlation between leadership style and library personnel job performance (r = 0.542, p < .05). Based on the findings observed, it was recommended that Librarians/library managers should employ a mixture of autocratic and democratic style of leadership in their library administration in order to enhance better job performance among library personnel; and the use of laissez-faire leadership style should be discouraged by librarians/library managers as it could not bring a better job performance among library personnel.

A descriptive survey research was used to carry out the investigation. The population was randomly sampled and covered all the matriculated student of the selected institutions that were registered as a library user. The questionnaires were thereafter sent to each of the institutions surveyed to facilitate prompt, high and accurate response from target population. Data were analyzed using frequency and percentages. Findings of the study showed that all the tertiary institutions libraries under study found Arabic materials readily available. Another finding in this study showed that students use the library for seeking their information needs. It has been revealed that facilities are organized for easy use. The finding showed that acquisition and collection polices were evaluated mainly to cater for students information needs. In additio...

The outcome has led to users gaining remote access to varieties of digitized information that is hitherto locally resident before digitization in hardcopy form in the various information centre and libraries without users’ restrictions. This initiative has helped to enhance the open access inventiveness. Nigeria libraries are therefore taking up the challenge of computerizing their libraries and some have taken some steps to source the requisite funds to digitize and archive their library resources for easier Web-based access. Consequent upon this development, the University of Ilorin, embarked on digitization of its local contents such as Convocation Ceremonies; Government Publications; and Staff Publications and Theses and Dissertations, and making these local resources available online. Research paper thumbnail of Information and communication technology skills and resource utilization: preclinical versus clinical medical students in a resource-limited African setting

Open Access Bioinformatics, 2011

Methods: Second-and fourth-year medical students of the University of Nigeria Enugu campus were participants in a comparative questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey between March 1 and April 30, 2010. Data on participants' demography, ICT skills, and resource uptake were captured in a questionnaire, and examined using descriptive and analytical statistics. The P-value was set at P , 0.05, df = 1. Results: The response rate was 93.9%. The 462 participants (preclinical = 310, clinical = 152) comprised significantly more males, 318 (68.8%), than females, 144 (31.2%) (P , 0.05) (gender ratio = 2.2:1), aged 18-40 years, with a mean age of 23.5 years ± 3.69 SD. Significantly more of the clinical students than preclinical students had previous ICT training (P , 0.05), higher ICT skills (P , 0.05), ICT access (P , 0.05), and more frequently utilized ICT resources (P , 0.05) generally. Specifically, the clinical students had significantly higher ICT resource uptake for study (P , 0.05) and leisure (P , 0.05), but not for research (P = 0.565) than preclinical students. Conclusions: The survey response rate was high. The cohorts varied widely in their ICT training, skills, access, and utilization. This has critical implications for the future design of the undergraduate medical curriculum. Incorporating ICT training into undergraduate medical training curriculum, and enhancement of ICT access is instructive. Further related research, preferably of longitudinal and multicenter design, is urgently needed.

The questionnaire, relevant literature and personal observation constitute the major instruments for data collection. The SPSS was used for the analysis. Descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentages were also used to analyze each research question. The study found out that the University of Ilorin Library is making efforts in digitizing its local contents for easy access, preservation and to improve on digital contents availability for their online users on certain subjects and resources. However, provisions are not made for the digitization of certain materials which could be of immense benefits to their online users. Recommendations were made that more conscious effort should be made to digitize more of relevant library materials and the various useful intellectual properties of the institution so that user can gain access to a wider range of resources.
