This paper aims to identify these points by taking into account their contributing factors that can help to better manage, prevent and prepare for the risks even after their occurrence. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the fire overhaul was investigated by identifying the risks of this stage and ranking them in terms of impact. This paper introduces danger points using empirical knowledge (questionnaire) along with theoretical knowledge (literature review) and suggested solutions. Finally, by investigating the dangers and their effects on each other, it introduced three main danger paths. The main problem is the lack of applied knowledge, the relationship between theoretical knowledge at this stage of fire and its application in firefighting operations. To solve this problem, a model was developed to determine the relationships b...

This study aims to integrate building information modeling (BIM), augmented reality (AR) and sensors to mitigate the operation and maintenance (O&M) problems of mechanical facilities by establishing intelligent management. Design/methodology/approach The component-level data of an under-construction commercial complex were implemented in a 3D model in Autodesk Revit and Navisworks. Then, sensors were installed in mechanical facilities to provide vital online information for the model. Moreover, Unity was used on Vuforia for the AR visualization of the devices. Findings It was found that FM not only could obtain building information but can also visualize the functioning of mechanical facilities online through a 3D model in BIM. Thus, in the case of a failure, the ...

This study endeavors to combine Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) through a multi-objective optimization algorithm to enhance the environmental efficiency of buildings. The core objective is the optimization of materials used in the building’s outer shell to effectively curtail operational energy consumption. To achieve this, we employed BIM modeling, parametric simulations with the Energy Plus engine, and Athena to assess the embodied energy in materials. The multi-objective optimization algorithm NSGAII was harnessed to determine the most suitable materials. The results derived from the LCA and BIM analyses illustrate that the selection of optimal materials for residential building facades in Iran can lead to a remarkable 40% reduction in annual average energy consumption. Furthermore, this approach contributes significantly to mitiga...

This research employs earned value management (EVM) factors to consider time and cost features and economic, natural, technical, and project risks to account for uncertainties and supervised learning models to estimate cost overrun. Time-series algorithms were also used to predict construction cost indexes (CCI) and model improvements in future forecasts. Outliers were deleted by the pre-processing process. Next, datasets were split into testing and training sets, and algorithms were implemented. The accuracy of different models was measured with the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and the normalized root mean square error (NRSME) criteria.FindingsThe findings show an improvement in the accuracy o...

The goal of this study is to identify the major causes of waste production over the project life cycle in Iran's construction industry and to propose effective solutions based on modern technologies like BIM.Design/methodology/approachAfter identifying the primary causes of construction and demolition waste production through interviews and literature analysis, solutions based on building information modeling (BIM) were provided. Then, using questionnaires and exploratory factor analysis (EFA), the areas impacting waste reduction were found.FindingsThe findings suggest that “prefabrication” is the best approach for improving time and quality, while “detection and prediction of errors in the design and construction phases” is the most cost-effective technique for addressing cost and environmental issues.Originality/valueCost, time, q...

Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive literature review identified six LTs and the 11 most critical factors affecting the efficiency of the construction phase. Then, the appropriateness of these LTs to improve the identified factors were assessed using the analytic hierarchy process. At last, a sensitivity analysis of the results was performed to validate the findings. Findings The results show that the most effective LT to improve success factors in the construction phase is “Daily Huddle Meetings”, and the most critical factor with the greatest impact on LT selection is determined to be “Efficient Construction Management”. Originality/value Few studies have evaluated the suitability of LTs in terms of construction success factors (CSFs). Hence, given the vi...

The gap between these two groups of information will lead to improper management and late decisions, eventually imposing unforeseen delays and cost overruns. Risk management by the means of adopting a new approach has been addressed in recent studies using new methods, such as BIM and its associated ...

It can play a critical role in reducing the possibility of claims as well as related disputes. The risk management knowledge area in large capital projects such as oil and gas is considered a questionable problem in the construction industry. The present study makes an effort to identify the importance of process groups in improving risk management performance. Design/methodology/approach This study is selected and ranked 36 factors leading to the claim in Iran's oil and gas industry through the Delphi method and a questionnaire. Factors categorized into a risk breakdown structure (RBS) include eight groups. Factors are linked to one of the process groups by a Delphi method. Finally, the relationship between RBS and the five process groups is analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings Findings showed that the planning process group had more c...

Currently, few capabilities of building information modeling (BIM) have been used in the facility maintenance operation. The purpose of this paper is to use a tool for making it easier to predict preventable defects in commercial building facility systems by examining a complete BIM. Design/methodology/approach To this end, a list of frequent defects in the facility system was achieved by a review of commercial building literature. Then, by examining a complete BIM model, the available methods and tools for O&M facilities during the operation period are identified and analyzed. Findings The results of the paper show that the solution presented based on total productive maintenance (TPM) subsets can effectively prevent facility system defects during the operation and maintenance period. In recent decades, these types of contracts are used extensively in developed countries with public-private partnership framework. Implementation and expansion of private partnerships in infrastructure projects results increase in investment and economical productivity. The paper purpose is to select the appropriate type of PPP contracts in financing railway projects in Iran benefiting from the decision making science and the expert opinions. The effect of criteria on selection method of financing railway project has been determined by using the questionnaire. Then the effect of criteria on financing method through partnerships (DBFO, BOT, BOO, Traditional PRI) has been assessed. Finally, suitable methods for financing rail projects are presented in order of preference, applying AHP methodology and Expert Choice software.
