Nutrition is one of the most important principles in Persian medicine, and Persian scholars have ... more Nutrition is one of the most important principles in Persian medicine, and Persian scholars have written various books and treatises on this subject. Atamat al-Marza by Hakim Roshan Zamir is one of these books. Hakim Roshan Zamir was a wise Persian scholar who lived in 12th-13th centuries AH (18th-19th centuries AD). He described the details of food-based treatment carefully in his book, Atamat al-Marza. This article tries to introduce this book and the role of foods in Persian medicine and represent recommendations and viewpoints of Hakim Roshan Zamir in this field.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the common causes of headache as well as the different methods of Phleboto... more OBJECTIVE: To describe the common causes of headache as well as the different methods of Phlebotomy (Fasd) and wet Cupping (Hijamat) based on Persian Medicine. METHODS: In this study, we searched Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed and Scopus to get any in vitro or clinical evidence of the efficacy and possible mechanisms of phlebotomy or wet cupping on different types of headaches. Also different types of headaches, according to PM, under the title of "Sodaa"; extracted from famous Persian medical text books with key words including "Sodaa", "Bayze" and "Shaqiqe". RESULTS: According to PM, diseases (dystemperament) are created by abnormal alteration in temperament. Temperament is a monolithic quality yielded by interaction between opposing qualities of four elements that are coldness, hotness, dryness and wetness. Headaches are caused by dystemperament (sue-Mizaj) in brain or in total body that are divided into simple and corporal. Common forms of the latter type are Vaporal and Migrant headache (Bokhari and Rihi). Each of these headaches is treated either through phlebotomy or wet cupping. CONCLUSION: In Persian Medicine, Fasd and Hijamat are easy and economical methods for treatment of headache with reasonable results. By describing the precise areas and indications of phlebotomy and wet cupping, this study provides the first step for future clinical trials in this field.

It... more Background: Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, especially in elderlies. Its exact pathogenesis is not yet known and existing therapies do not have enough efficacy. Therefore, the use of complementary therapies such as traditional Persian medicine for improving memory function is increasing. Objective: The aim of this study is evaluating recommended natural products in important traditional Persian medicine textbooks. Methods: For this purpose, keywords such as "Nesyan" (ie: oblivion, amnesia), "Hafezeh" (ie: memory), "Zekr" (ie: mention) and "Faramoushi" (ie: forgetfulness(were used to search in recommended prescription in important traditional Persian medicine textbooks. Then, the most repeated plants were extracted from the prescription and evaluated for their pharmacological properties recently published articles cited in the scientific databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Medline, and Scopus. Results: 262 natural products were in 96 evaluated prescription, 40 natural products were more repeated. These products were introduced in the table. Besides, their neuroprotective effects, antioxidant effects, and anti-Alzheimer's disease effect were also included in the table. Conclusion: Based on these results, traditional Persian has introduced many treatments for Alzheimer's disease, which requires clinical studies to prove or disprove their efficacy and safety.

The cause is not completely understood but genetics, increased growth of bacteria in the small intestine, and increased activity of Demodex mites are considered responsible. There is no certain cure for it; however, oral antibiotics, including tetracycline and doxycycline, and topical medications including metronidazole gel and azelaic acid cream are effective in improving symptoms. Due to the chronicity of the disease, regular use of these drugs is associated with many complications. Fumariavaillantii is used in Persian medicine to treat CU. The anti-inflammatory and anti-histaminic effects of chemical components of Fumaria such as fumaric acid and caffeic acid were confirmed. Dimethyl fumarate reduces the pro- inflammatory contribution and monomethyl fumarate can increase IL-4, an antiinflammatory interleukin, or can decrease IFN- , an inflammatory factor. The current study assesses the efficacy and tolerability of Fumaria vaillantii versus cetirizine in the management of CU. He started to working in Darolfonoon School of medicine as one of distinguished professors in natural history and parasitology. Dr. Ahmadieh tried hardly to treat patients via traditional medicine methods and modern medicine if necessary. Current paper briefly describes the life of Dr. Ahmadieh and his view about various medical schools and their methods of treatment. Two books have been remained from him, called (Secret of treatment) and (Treatment of rheumatism, gout and sciatica). In these books, he has sincerely written his experiences with presenting of patients histories, prescriptive drugs and their effects.

Objectives: Pastinaca sativa (parsnip), is a plant with nutritional and medicinal properties whic... more Objectives: Pastinaca sativa (parsnip), is a plant with nutritional and medicinal properties which has been used in all over the world and study about it is rare. In Persian Medicine parsnip is named as zardak and has many uses such as laxative, libido enhancer, kidney stone crusher and diuretic. Because the wide traditional usage of parsnip, in this review the composition and pharmacological properties of this plant are discussed. Methods: Some data base such as Cochrane, Scopus, PubMed were searched up to 2018 for studies about Pastinaca sativa. In this review study after consider to exclusion criteria, all of the English review and clinical trial were included. Results: Finally, 46 articles were selected for extraction data about the parsnip. Data extraction based on these studies the most important active ingredients of parsnip include coumarins, furanocoumarins, polyacetylenes, essential oils and flavonoids. Different studies determined that Pastinaca sativa has pharmacological effects in CNS, respiratory, gastrointestinal, liver, skin, cardiovascular and urogenital diseases. Conclusion: The most important active ingredients in Pastinaca sativa are furanocoumarins, flavonoids and polyacetylenes, and it has many pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, vasodilator, antifungal, antimicrobial and antidepressant. A main mentioned side effect of parsnip is phototoxicity that was usually reported in direct skin contact. However, family and Some properties and compounds of Pastinaca sativa and Daucus carota are similar but carrots are very popular nowadays. Due to abundant active components and few clinical studies of parsnip, more Studies are recommended to evaluate the effects of it.

Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 has spread quickly all over the world. Apparently, the uncon... more Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 has spread quickly all over the world. Apparently, the uncontrolled increases in the inflammatory and the immune processes are its major pathologies. Therefore, the use of natural plants containing antioxidant factors for the regulation of the immune system can be useful for the inflicted patients. Many epidemic diseases have occurred throughout human history. Persian physicians such as Avicenna offered solutions to these epidemics that were helpful in controlling these diseases. Objective: In this study, we introduce the herbs according to traditional Persian medicine's point of view that confirm their having antitussive, antipyretic, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Methods: In this regard, a thorough search was done on the detoxifier and immuno-modulatory plants in the Persian medicine books such as Makhzan-ol Advieh" and "Tohfat ol momenin" and "Qanun fi al tib". Then, the herbs that were effective in fever and pulmonary diseases were browsed and arranged, and their pharmacological properties were also searched in the scientific databases. Results: This study examined the antipyretic, antitussive and immuneenhancing properties of the plants cited in Persian medicine books and showed that plants such as orange, sweat lemon, citron, myrtle and lavender have antipyretic, antitussive, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Conclusion: It seems that the introduced plants could be potential candidates for animal studies and clinical trials. However, more studies are needed to prove their specific effectiveness.
