Background: Total Quality Management represents a modern management philosophy, established due t... more Background: Total Quality Management represents a modern management philosophy, established due to the development in all aspects of life in today's world. Aim: To assess nursing staff awareness regarding challenges for applying Total Quality Management at Assuit University Hospital. Research design: A descriptive study convenience sample design with a sample contains all nurses working in General Surgical, Special Surgical, General Medical, and Special Medical departments at Assiut University Hospital with a total number of n= 219. Tools: Total Quality Management Challenges questionnaire is used. Results: Show that above one-third of them agree about all items of challenges for applying total quality management. Conclusion: No statistically significant differences between quality management challenges with personal and occupational characteristics of the studied nurses at Assuit University Hospital. Recommendations: Conduct an awareness sessions about total quality management between nurses at Assuit University Hospital; Conduct a total quality management training or program to all nurses at Assuit University Hospital, And the availability of quality assurance coordinator nurse in each department who works to implement quality policies in the departments and act as a link between the department and the Quality Committee.

Background: Incident report is an important tool which helps health care provider to manage and d... more Background: Incident report is an important tool which helps health care provider to manage and document their medical and administrative information. Aims: Designing, implementing training program to improve Nurses' knowledge and practice about incident report at Assuit Rajhy-Liver Hospital. Research design: A quasiexperimental design with pre, post and follow up test were utilized. Study subject: included all nurses (n=30) at Assuit Rajhy-Liver Hospital. Study tool: a tool was applied regarding incident report for (pre, post and follow up phase of the training program) about incident report. Results: There was marked improvement about nurses' knowledge and practice immediately after program implementation and retained through follow up, with highly statistical significant differences through the program phases. Conclusion: Study subject had an improvement of knowledge and practice through follow up phase. Recommendation: Maintain and apply incident report structured form developed within the present study as permanent data source at Assuit Rajhy-Liver Hospital and for University Hospitals.

Clinical audit is one of the main tools to establish whether the best evidence is being used in p... more Clinical audit is one of the main tools to establish whether the best evidence is being used in practice, as it identifies any gaps between what is done and what should be done, and rectifies any deficiencies in the actual processes of care. Clinical audit has been increasingly required for the accreditation process in every modern healthcare system. Aim of the study: Record auditing to assess nursing functions in general Intensive Care Unit at main Assiut University Hospital. Subject and method: A descriptive research design was utilized in the present study. The study sample constituted of 50 patients' records (medical and nursing records). Study tool: Auditing of Nursing Functions questionnaire consisted of two parts: 1 st part included two questions related to socio-demographic data of patient includes: (name of patient, hospital number); 2 nd part of the questionnaire adopted from (Phaneuf's nursing audit, 1955) which includes fifty items of nursing care functions. Results: Illustrated that none of the study subject had an excellent auditing of nursing and medical care, nearly two thirds of the data audited were good, more than one quarter were incomplete in auditing of nursing and medical care; and eight percent had a poor auditing of nursing and medical care. Recommendations: In-service training program for nurses needed to improve the quality of service. Replicate of these study at different units in health care settings to ensure effectiveness of the tool and serving as basis for planning new programs; identification of areas of strength and weakness in various settings.

This study was necessitated due to the conflicts in Nigerian university system such as the univer... more This study was necessitated due to the conflicts in Nigerian university system such as the universities' management and ASUU as it has been a threat to Nigerian educational and social development. This is unwholesome for the university community and Nigeria educational system as a whole. It was for this reason that this research titled emotional intelligence and conflict management in selected Federal universities in South East Zone of Nigeria. This study was anchored on Personality Trait Theory. The population of the study was 2271 and it was obtained from respective selected federal universities in South East Zone of Nigeria. Purposive or judgmental sampling technique was adopted in selecting two universities from a total of six (6) universities in the zone. Taro Yamane's formula was used to determine a sample size of 340 and Bowley's proportional allocation formula was used to allocate copies of questionnaire to each of the universities. The study employed survey research design using structured questionnaire to elicit data. The questionnaire developed for this study was subjected to content validity and the reliability obtained was 0.83. The study adopted the use of multiple regression analysis to test the hypothesis at 0.05 significant level. The findings revealed that there is a significant positive relationship between empathy (emotional awareness, self-evaluation) and obliging style of handling conflict in south east zone of Nigeria. The study concluded that empathy helps the school managements and lecturers to be aware of others emotions and react politely to them; and it helps in emotional awareness of one's limitations and strengths so as to avert and handle conflict in Universities in South East Zone of Nigeria. The researcher recommended that the management of the universities in South East Zone of Nigeria should adopt empathy through emotional awareness, self-evaluation with obliging style of handling conflict so as to enable adequate and effective management of conflict within the university system.

Background: Role conflict and role ambiguity frequently emerge as problems that result from the d... more Background: Role conflict and role ambiguity frequently emerge as problems that result from the demands of organization and can be components of role stress and role strain. Professional healthcare providers must clearly understand what is expected of their performance, this can be achieved when all member in the organization have clearly defined roles and overall objectives .Aim:1-Identify causes of role conflict and role ambiguity at Minia University Hospital. 2-Determine level of role conflict, role ambiguity and nurses' performance at Minia University, and 3-To find out the relation among role conflict, role ambiguity and nurses' performance at Minia University Hospital. Research design: The study was developed within a descriptive correlational approach. Setting: The study carried out at Minia University Hospital .Subjects: a total of 85 nurses who worked in all general and special inpatient units at Minia University Hospital. Tools of data collection: The study tools consisted of three tools, it includes1-Personal data sheet 2-Role conflict and role ambiguity questionnaire, 3) Observation checklist for Assessment of Nursing Performance. Results: the performance of the studied nurses have negative correlation with role conflict (r=-0.183 & p=0.094) and with role ambiguity (r=-0.119 & p=0.279). There is a positive correlation between role ambiguity and role conflict (r=0.5 & p=0.0000). Conclusion: our study concluded that majority of studied sample at Minia University Hospital have high level of role conflict and role ambiguity regardless of demographic characteristics. Recommendations: On the light of the study, it was recommended that: Nursing managers should plan an orientation program to orient nurses about hospital policy, rules, regulation, job description and responsibilities, other's expectation, facilities , equipment, and performance evaluation standard.

A positive and enriched learning environment can influence a students' perception of the healthca... more A positive and enriched learning environment can influence a students' perception of the healthcare facility as a possible future employment site. The aim of the present study was to explore student nurses' perception regarding their nursing role. A descriptive design was used in the present study. This study was conducted at Faculty of Nursing-Assiut University. The study subjects constituted of 763 students who were enrolled in the 1 st (164), 2 nd (130), 3 rd (146), 4 th academic year (112) (2012-2013) at Faculty of Nursing-Assiut University, and (211) internship year respectively. The overall of the total nursing students' perceptions about their roles scale had an internal consistency of α = 0.944. Results: Mean scores were highest among the four academic years as regard to administration, care giver, communication, and teaching respectively. While, among internship year students care giver was the highest mean score followed by communication, administration and teaching respectively. There was a highly statistically significant difference for all factors among the four academic year and internship year (**P≤ 0.001).Conclusions: Four academic years students perceived administration highest mean score followed by care giver, communication, and teaching as the main roles of nurses. While, among internship year students care giver was the highest mean score followed by communication, administration and teaching respectively with a highly statistically significant differences. Recommendations: Nurse Educators and practitioners are responsible for the development of nursing students' perception and working as a role model and interactions that provides the context for student learning and professional socialization. Researching how managers and senior leaders view the role of a nurse students would prove valuable in developing a strong and positive working relationship among nurse managers, staff nurses, nursing educators, and students.

The increasing healthcare costs have forced the healthcare managers to know the cost of different... more The increasing healthcare costs have forced the healthcare managers to know the cost of different alternatives approaches to providing care. This study aims to estimate the costs of general surgical operating theater services at Assuit University Hospital. Subject& Methods: Subjects of the study included three types :-(patient's records, surgeons, and nurses).The total subjects of this study (Total number=280 patients records), the records of this study scheduled for surgery as follows: Major, Minor, and Technically Advanced Operations. Data collection: was done by using: Retrospective Review Tool of operations Performed in Year (2011) , Monitoring Form for Operating Theater" to record activities performed by nursing staff and auxiliary; and Costing and Pricing List Form for Surgical Procedures in Operating theater. Results: direct (variable, fixed) costs and indirect costs were higher for major and technically advanced operations than minor operations. The minor, major operations done under spinal anesthesia were less in their total basic direct variable cost. indirect costs for all surgeries, anesthesia, nursing and operating theaters represents the highest costs among the (indirect costs) for technically advanced operations than in major and minor operations. Recommendations: Increase awareness of nurses about the importance of calculates the cost to maintain cost reduction. Proper utilization of operating theater time by using an organized surgeries list and coordinating activities between the surgical departments and operating theater to reduce the surgery's waiting time. In-service training programs for newly employed nursing personnel about operating theater services.

This study aims to estimate the costs of general surgical operating theater services at Assuit University Hospital. Subject& Methods: Subjects of the study included three types :-(patient's records, surgeons, and nurses).The total subjects of this study (Total number=280 patients records), the records of this study scheduled for surgery as follows: Major, Minor, and Technically Advanced Operations. Data collection: was done by using: Retrospective Review Tool of operations Performed in Year (2011) , Monitoring Form for Operating Theater" to record activities performed by nursing staff and auxiliary; and Costing and Pricing List Form for Surgical Procedures in Operating theater. Results: direct (variable, fixed) costs and indirect costs were higher for major and technically advanced operations than minor operations. The minor, major operations done under spinal anesthesia were less in their total basic direct variable cost. indirect costs for all surgeries, anesthesia, nursing and operating theaters represents the highest costs among the (indirect costs) for technically advanced operations than in major and minor operations. Recommendations: Increase awareness of nurses about the importance of calculates the cost to maintain cost reduction. Proper utilization of operating theater time by using an organized surgeries list and coordinating activities between the surgical departments and operating theater to reduce the surgery's waiting time.
