Architectural adaptation involves refurbishing, retrofitting, restoration, renovation, rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, material reuse, conservation, and preservation, as well as other activities to improve building conditions. In this study, the most relevant definitions, implementations, and ranges of the specified terminologies are examined; on the basis of this classification, a conceptual model is constructed to facilitate accurate categorization of building adaptations and its application in various case studies. The current state of heritage buildings in Erbil (the Erbil Citadel as a World Heritage Site and the buffer zone as cultural heritage) is evaluated. We aimed to investigate their current conservation status and determine whether the Erbil Citadel’s heritage building adaptation has addressed the issue of energy retrofitting to realize gre...
The reduction of natural resources, climate change, and the increase of nonrenewable energy price... more The reduction of natural resources, climate change, and the increase of nonrenewable energy prices are real challenges for the next decades. Furthermore, the world witnessed a massive rise of 200% of CO 2 , caused by population growth from 1995 to 2011 (Masoso and Grobler 2010).

The present research aims to propose and evaluate several architectural shading devices that can be integrated into educational building designs in daylight-illuminated classrooms lit from a single side in semi-arid climates. These elements have a potential in allowing the penetration of natural daylight with improve indoor thermal environment and eventually reduce the energy consumption through cooling and artificial lighting. The final goal of the research is to obtain the optimal parameters (geometry and materials) of shading devices for the simulated orientation of classrooms in the case study. A computerized simulation tool (IES ) is used to carry out the investigation; taking a typical public school building in Erbil City as the empirical background of the semi-arid climate. A series of simulations are performed to determine the average illuminance ...

The architectural heritage and aesthetic value do not allow typical retrofit intervention. All the Governmental and planning directives are mainly sympathize on saving energy in existing buildings and are not afford the historical buildings. Architectural Heritage bodies (national and international) have to act to determine type of energy retrofit measurements that can be applied to historical buildings to conserve their value. In the other hand there is a need to enhance the energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of historic buildings. The aim of this project is to reduce the energy use of a heritage building through technical interventions and selecting specific retrofit measurements. Then evaluate each of these interventions through sustainable tools. Designing energy efficiency retrofits for existing buildings has be...
