A moderate MBL over the first year has conventionally been associated with clinical success. However, different implants are associated with distinct amounts of MBL during their first functional year. Therefore, this study evaluated the MBL in pristine maxillary bone around implants with different types of implant-abutment connections and sought to determine the effect of other clinical factors on this tissue response. Two hundred forty-six implants were placed in 101 patients with a mean age of 54.43 years. The MBL around two different types of implants (internal versus external prosthetic connection) was evaluated at 6 and 18 months after loading. Different variables were recorded to analyze their influence on radiographic parameters using a complex samples general linear model. At 18 months, MBL ranged from 0 to 3.56 mm; less than 1 mm was lost around 46.3% (mesial) an...

MATERIALS AND METHODS A case-control study was made involving 114 subjects (60 patients with SAHS and 54 controls). A thorough periodontal evaluation was carried out, and demographic and clinical data were collected. RESULTS Periodontitis was more prevalent in SAHS (80%) than in the controls (48.1%). The recorded statistically significant association (OR = 4.31; p = 0.001) was seen to weaken in the multivariate model (OR = 2.03; p = 0.204), with BMI adopting a more influential role. The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was correlated to probing depth (PD) (r = 0.40; p = 0.002) and clinical attachment level (CAL) (r = 0.41; p = 0.001). The periodontal parameters were seen to be higher in obese SAHS patients (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) than in non-obese SAHS patients (BMI < 30 kg/m2). CONCLUSIONS The greater prevalence and severity of periodontitis in patients with SAHS were fundamentally influenced by BMI. On the other hand, periodontitis was more severe in patients with severe SAHS. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Patients with SAHS have a greater prevalence of periodontitis, fundamentally related to increased obesity. Therefore, obese subjects with SAHS should be screened for periodontal disease.

The purpose of this study was to gather information on the current assessment and management of patients with moderate-to-severe AD in routine daily practice. Methods. A cross-sectional two-round Delphi survey with the participation of dermatologists and allergologists throughout Spain was conducted. They completed a 46-item questionnaire, and consensus was defined when responses of ≥80% of participants coincided in the categories of a 5-point Likert scale for that item. Results. A total of 105 specialists (aged 40–59 years) completed the two rounds. Participants agreed regarding the consideration of AD as a multifaceted disease and the differences in clinical presentation of AD according to the patient’s age. It is recommendable to perform a skin biopsy to exclude early stage T-cell cutaneous lymphoma, psoriasis, or dermatitis herpetiformis, among others (99.1%). Also, consensus was reached regarding the use of the SCORAD index to quantify the severity of the disease (8...

To evaluate the relationship between oxidative stress parameters in polymorphonuclear leukocytes ... more To evaluate the relationship between oxidative stress parameters in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and PMN-endothelial cell interactions in patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) according to different degrees of severity of the disease. For this cross-sectional study one hundred and eighty-two subjects were divided into four groups according to degree of CP: without CP (n=37), mild CP (n=59), moderate CP (n=51) and severe CP (n=35). We determined anthropometric and biochemical variables, periodontal parameters, inflammatory markers, oxidative stress parameters (superoxide and mitochondrial membrane potential) and PMN-endothelium cell interactions (rolling flux, velocity and adhesion). Systemic inflammatory markers -C-reactive protein, leukocyte count, TNFα and retinol-binding protein 4 - were altered in the group with CP. Total superoxide was augmented in patients with moderate and severe periodontitis, whereas mitochondrial membrane potential did not change. Furthermore, PM...

Alzheimers disease (AD) is a very common cause of dementia in developed countries and increases ... more Alzheimers disease (AD) is a very common cause of dementia in developed countries and increases its prevalence progressively with age. AD etiopathogenesis is not yet understood. However, it is recognized that neuroinflammation plays a key role in its pathogenesis with the activation of microglia and the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines triggering irreversible neurodegenerative deterioration. This paper is a short review of the relationship between AD and periodontal disease (PD). Both processes may have common causes: both are inflammatory diseases and the prevalence and progression increases with ageing. However, we must consider that AD begins to develop many years before its clinical diagnosis. It is thought that in this prodromal period a connection could be established between both processes, both sustained by low intensity inflammation. There are several studies that relate both processes such as the possible systemic exposure to certain periodontopathogenic bacteria or...

This prospective, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted among a group of xerostomia patients (n = 30) compared with 30 matched control subjects. The following evaluation scales were used to assess the psychological profile of each patient: the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14), the Xerostomia Inventory, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). The PSQI obtained 5.3 3 ± 1.78 for patients with xerostomia compared with 4.26 ± 1.01 for control subjects (p = 0.006); ESS obtained 5.7 ± 2.1 for test patients vs 4.4 0 ± 1 for control subjects (p = 0.010). Statistical regression analysis showed that xerostomia was significantly associated with depression (p = 0.027). Patients with xerostomia exhibited significant decreases in sleep quality compared with control subjects.

The sample consisted of 10 subjects divided in 2 groups, one with Sjögren disease and a control group. Saliva samples were submitted to an inmunodetection analysis. In addition, non pathological salivary glands, obtained from 2 subjects who underwent minor oral surgery, were incubated with leukocyte homogenates and analysed to compare the obtained fragments. The inmunodetection analysis of Sjögren saliva revealed multiple protein bands, including fibronectin, that were not present in saliva from healthy individuals. The inmunostained bands varied depending on the course of the disease, showing more fibronectin fragments in an active phase. Furthermore, results obtained from the non-pathological glands incubated with leukocyte homogenates were similar to those revealed in saliva from Sjögren patients. Th...
