At the same time, drama education is becoming established in education, schooling and pedagogy. In drama lessons, dramatic forms are approached as objects of cultural study. The dramatic mode, through role play, improvisation and script work, is used as a pedagogic method and a mode of learning. Given this complex setting, this paper sets out to explore and elaborate a cultural and historical approach to drama and learning, drawing from Vygotsky's writing. Four connected theoretical concerns emerging from this work are discussed: historical setting; signs, cultural production and culture; the role of affect; processes and patterns of learning. These are elaborated in reference to current themes in cultural historical approaches to learning. Complementary approaches from the fields of cultural studies and multimodal social semiotics are drawn on. These are used to develop theoretical and methodological approaches to description and analysis of learning and drama.
