Research paper thumbnail of RF-MEMS switches based on a low-complexity technology and related aspects of MMIC integration

This paper presents RF-MEMS devices, which are based on low-complexity fabrication technologies. ... more This paper presents RF-MEMS devices, which are based on low-complexity fabrication technologies. Tuneable filters and phase shifting elements for Ka-band have already been realized by using a fabrication process which requires only two photo-lithographic steps. Adding just one more lithographic process step results in the realization of high performance switching devices with insertion losses of -0.2dB at 30GHz. Due to their low fabrication complexity, all these RF-MEMS devices minimize technological challenges and have the potential for being highly reliable due to their design principle. In addition, these technologies may pave the way for the monolithic integration of RF-MEMS based circuits with compound semiconductor MMICs for highly integrated and high performance multi-functional circuits.

The chosen MIMO configuration allows to integrate communication antennas without increasing the size of the PCB. The system is all incorporated in a single planar PCB with 36 radiating elements, 16 for receive (RX) and 16 for transmit (TX) for the radar as well as 4 for communication purposes. In order to achieve more bandwidth of operation, Resonant Slot Patch Antennas (RSPA) for the radar, and spiral antennas for communication were designed. Electrical measurements of the radar frontend and the communication datalink were carried out with good results. To the best of the authors' knowledge this is the first time that available space in the center of the aperture of a MIMO array is used for a different RF functionality.

It engulfs information for both customers and producers in order to maximize their profit. Thus, choosing the best method of price forecasting is a crucial task to have the most accurate forecast. In this paper the price forecasting is done based on Neural Network (NN). The method is examined by using data of an electricity market. The results are compared and described well in the results section.

Variable frequency drives are energy saving drives. But they generate harmonics generates. Harmonics introduced by any means affect the performance parameters of any system The presence of harmonics is the system for a long duration & that, too, of higher order affect the various parameters in a Power distribution system. Harmonics change the shapes of current & voltage waveform there by affecting the overall power quality. In this work, it is concluded that Variable Frequency Drives introduce harmonics that affect the current signal waveform and increase Total Harmonics Distortion (THD). The results showed that by placing a three phase harmonic filter in the circuit where VFD is used for speed control of motor the THD is reduced considerably. This method of eliminating harmonics is a very cost effective and robust. It is also applicable in industries where VFDs are used for motor speed control...

In this period, language education gradually no longer centered solely on Latin. The linguistic scope widened considerably, partly as a result of scholarly curiosity, although religious and missionary zeal, commercial considerations, and political motives were also of decisive significance. Statesmen discovered the political power of standardized vernaculars in the typically Early Modern process of state formation. The widening of the linguistic horizon was, first and foremost, reflected in a steadily increasing production of grammars and dictionaries, along with pocket textbooks, conversational manuals, and spelling treatises. One strategy of coping with the stunning linguistic diversity consisted of first collecting data on as many languages as possible and then tracing elements that were common to all or to certain groups of languages. Language comparison was not limited to historical and genealogical endeavor...

Research paper thumbnail of Reliability of SM2RAIN precipitation datasets in comparison to gauge observations and hydrological modelling over arid regions

Their precipitation estimates rely on clouds properties derived from microwave and thermal sensors in a so‐named ‘top‐down’ approach. Recently, a ‘bottom‐up’ approach to infer precipitation from soil moisture (SM) estimates has resulted in the release of two new precipitation datasets (P‐datasets). One uses satellite‐based SM estimates from the European Spatial Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) (SM2RAIN‐CCI) while the other uses satellite‐based SM from European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT) (SM2RAIN‐ASCAT). This study assesses SM2RAIN‐ASCAT and ‐CCI reliability over two arid regions: Bolivian and Peruvian Altiplano and Pakistan (South Asia) using (a) direct comparisons with rain gauges and (b) testing the sensitivity of streamflow modelling to the P‐datasets. Selecting two different regions and different indicators helps to assess whether the P‐dataset reliability varies depending on the assessment method and location. For comparison purposes, the most reliable P‐datasets from the literature are also considered (IMERG‐E v.6, IMERG‐L v.6, IMERG‐F v.6, CHIRPS v.2 and MSWEP v.2.2). Compared to rain gauge observations and based on the modified Kling–Gupta Efficiency (KGE) values, the SM2RAIN‐ASCAT and ‐CCI are more accurate in the Altiplano than in Pakistan. This difference is explained by a more favourable physical context for satellite‐based SM estimates in the Altiplano. Over the Altiplano and despite an overall positive bias, SM2RAIN‐ASCAT describes rain gauges temporal dynamics as well as IMERG‐F v.6, CHIRPS v.2 and MSWEP v.2.2 and provides streamflow simulations very close to those obtained when using IMERG‐F v.6, CHIRPS v.2 and MSWEP v.2.2 as forcing data.

In this paper we present an overview of POAM observations and analysis obtained during the SOLVE2/VINTERSOL winter. PSCs were observed quite frequently in the early part of the winter (through December). In fact, in the first half of December the PSC occurrence frequency was larger in the 2002/3 winter than that observed in any other POAM measurement year (POAM II: 1993/94-1995/96, and POAM III: 1998/99-2002/03). After a warming, which occurred in mid-January, PSCs were observed only episodically for the remainder of the winter, and the last POAM PSC observation was made on 21 March. From an analysis of PSC occurrence frequency as a function of UKMO temperature, we infer that the intense PSC activity in December resulted in extensive denitrification of the polar v...

The transverse deflection and two rotations of the laminate are independently approximated with the moving least squares (MLS) approximation. The weighting coefficients used in the MLSDQ approximation are obtained through the fast computation of the MLS shape functions and their partial derivatives. The natural frequencies of vibration are computed for various laminated plates and compared with the available published results. Through numerical experiments, the capability and efficiency of the MLSDQ method for eigenvalue problems are demonstrated, and the numerical accuracy and convergence are thoughtfully examined. Effects of the size of support, order of completeness of the basis functions and node irregularity on the numerical accuracy are also investigated.

The MEMS are fabricated on silicon, with a bimorph metallisation. Affected by a mechanic stress gradient in the bimorph layer, free standing parts of the structure roll up. These bended beams can be switched onto the substrate by electrostatic actuation. Using these bended structures in a transmission line or a loaded line, the effective dielectricity of the line and thus the phase shift of the line is changed. The concepts of switchable loaded lines and switchable transmission lines are compared in terms of phase shift and insertion loss. A 20° phase shifter with IL < 0.5dB @ 30GHz is shown, produced in a MEMS process with only 2 lithographic steps.
