This paper provides a comprehensive geological and geotechnical engineering analysis of these mines, focusing on pipe sizes, production magnitude, and comparative significance. Special attention is given to Kao, which is not only the largest kimberlite pipe in Lesotho but also ranks among the largest globally. This paper evaluates these mines within the context of their contributions to the world’s diamond production, emphasizing Lesotho’s role in the global diamond economy despite its small geographic size.

Striking the right balance between maximizing ore recovery and prioritizing safety requires a comprehensive and datadriven approach. This framework, compiled by Dr. Diplom-Geologe Gerard Molatoli Letlatsa, a geologist with over 30 years of experience in heavy construction and mining industries, outlines a multi-step procedure for optimizing open-pit mines, emphasizing both economic and safety considerations. Core Principles:  Balancing Economics with Safety: Quantify both economic benefits and safety risks to make informed decisions, prioritizing long-term sustainability and investing in preventative measures.  Data-driven Approach: Utilize advanced technologies like 3D geological modelling, real-time monitoring, and machine learning to gain deeper insights from collected data.  Risk Mitigation: Implement a proactive approach, identifying and addressing potential hazards early, employing layered mitigation strategies, and continuously reviewing and updating risk assessments.  Compliance with Regulations: Stay informed about evolving regulations and industry best practices, seeking expert guidance to ensure adherence. Key Steps: 1. Geotechnical Investigation: Conduct a thorough investigation to understand the rock mass properties, potential hazards, and hydrogeological conditions. Utilize advanced technologies for data collection and analysis. 2. Design Phase: Balance economic considerations with safety by analysing ore-body geometry, stripping ratios, and safety factors. Assess the feasibility of steeper slopes, considering risk analysis and potential mitigation measures. Include additional access routes for resilience and phased development for initial risk reduction. Continuously adapt the design based on monitoring data. 3. Data Collection and Monitoring: Implement a comprehensive program for collecting and analyzing data through core logging, face mapping, deformation measurements, and real-time monitoring systems. Define clear protocols, identify responsible personnel, and invest in skilled personnel and data analysis tools. Utilize advanced tools like LiDAR and geotechnical extensometers for enhanced monitoring. 4. Risk Management: Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments, prioritizing critical risks. Implement mitigation measures like berms, drainage systems, rockfall protection, and real-time monitoring. Establish clear warning and evacuation

Geotechnical Open Pit Mine Inspection Program: Enhancing Safety and Operational Efficiency Through Systematic Assessment and Risk Mitigation

Open pit mining operations are vital contributors to global resource extraction, yet they inherently present complex geotechnical challenges due to the dynamic interplay of rock masses, slopes, and excavation processes. Ensuring the safety of personnel, infrastructure, and equipment within these mining environments demands a robust geotechnical inspection program. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for a Geotechnical Open Pit Mine Inspection Program (GOPMIP) designed to systematically assess and mitigate geotechnical risks in open pit mines.

The GOPMIP encompasses a multidisciplinary approach that integrates geological, geotechnical, and engineering principles with advanced monitoring technologies. The program's foundation rests on the concept of continuous assessment, proactive risk identification, and data-driven decision-making. By leveraging geotechnical software, remote sensing, and real-time monitoring systems, the GOPMIP aims to empower mining personnel with timely information to anticipate potential instability and initiate targeted interventions.

However, little has been studied on the effect of shear zones on rock mass behavior and its impact on stability of rock slopes. At Letšeng Diamonds open pit mine in Lesotho, the shear zone composed of sheared kimberlite material, calcite and altered basalt is forming part of the haul ramp into the main pit cut 3. The alarming rate at which the shear zone is deteriorating has triggered concerns about both local and global stability of pit the walls. This study presents the numerical modelling of the open pit slope affected by shear zone at Letšeng Diamond Mine (LDM). Analysis of the slope involved development of the slope model by using a twodimensional finite element code RS2. Interfaces between shear zone and host rock were represented by special joint elements incorporated in the finite element code. The analysis of structural geological mapping d...
